This chapter describe the main challenges in the adoption of CA while highlighting the diversity of practices related to soil, environmental and farm management practiced in the region. Practices consistent with CA include soil and water conservation measures, agroforestry and integration of crops and livestock, which can be used as catalysts for developing and upscaling CA. The chapter highlights challenges ranging from policy commitment to training and farmer attitudes. There also needs to be more accurate information on the extent and development of CA in the region. CA has great potential for increasing food security, addressing climate change and protecting natural resources.","PeriodicalId":294490,"journal":{"name":"Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127938024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results of field research in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey and Iran for the past 10 years or more, comparing Conservation Agriculture (CA) methods to conventional tillage methods, show that CA, the newly introduced method of soil management, is environmentally and economically more beneficial than the conventional method of tilling and farming. In this chapter, the results of field research and extension programmes in countries of the West Asia region are presented. The CA research has been conducted on rainfed and irrigated agriculture, on various soil types, and farmed by people of varying educational backgrounds. Farmers in the West Asia region are being encouraged to shift from the current degrading conventional methods of farming to CA systems. The results have generally verified that the no-till method of farming is more beneficial to the farmers and to the environment, if there is effective weed management. The results also verified that CA is a good approach to rebuild soil and agricultural productivity.","PeriodicalId":294490,"journal":{"name":"Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127404453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is no unified statistics and data collection system for CA in the region. However, the estimated area under CA is about 10-11 million hectares (ha) while the area of degraded agricultural land is continuously growing. The population increase and raising demand for food, negative impact of unsustainable agricultural production practices to environment along with land degradation, recurrent drought and heat stress due to climate change, and other factors are gradually leading to adoption and promotion of CA in all countries of the region. Despite this, there are still challenges for the widespread implementation of the CA system. Lack or insufficient access to special field equipment and machinery, limited knowledge and skills of local people - farmers, agricultural and extension specialists, inadequate evidence-based results of research work and other factors still play a limiting role in the widespread adoption of CA. In addition to the dissemination of knowledge, techniques and evidence of successful practices, the dissemination and greater adoption of CA in the region requires expanding CA research work and political support to increase the motivation and direct involvement of farmers. Training young specialists and farmers will also help to make a huge breakthrough in the development of CA in the region.","PeriodicalId":294490,"journal":{"name":"Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115200403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estimated values in hectares under CA came from collaborators of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. The estimated total area under different forms of CA is about 696,950 ha. Lack of or insufficient access to machinery for planting, fertilising, and spraying pesticides limits the adoption and spread of CA. Besides knowledge, technologies and supplies, adoption of CA needs a favourable policy environment, motivation and participation of farmers and their communities. There is still a long way to go in the region from the old approach of soil conservation in agricultural land based on physical structures to a situation of widespread adoption of CA systems.","PeriodicalId":294490,"journal":{"name":"Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science","volume":"332 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123313479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, most of the challenges addressed in the Common Agriculture Policy could be faced through Conservation Agriculture. Not only the agri-environmental ones, but also those concerning farmer and rural communities' prosperity. The optimisation of inputs and similar yields than conventional tillage, make Conservation Agriculture a profitable system compared to the tillage-based agriculture. Whereas this sustainable agricultural system was conceived for protecting agricultural soils from its degradation, the numerous collateral benefits that emanate from soil conservation, i.e., climate change mitigation and adaptation, have raised Conservation Agriculture as one of the most studied global agrosciences, being adopted by an increasing number of farmers worldwide, including Europe.","PeriodicalId":294490,"journal":{"name":"Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115972579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
