This paper describes the initial performance evaluation of a tactile feedback actuator introduced in pt. 1. An adaptive PI algorithm using continuously variable gain scheduling helps to compensate for nonlinearities in the solenoid actuator. The closed-loop behavior meets performance specifications, but the mass added to the force-reflecting haptic interface degrades its performance. Improvements in future prototypes may reduce the mass added by the tactile feedback hardware by over 30%. The work concludes with recommendations for psychophysical research that will increase understanding of human performance in tasks using haptic feedback devices.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125364395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PMMA has proven to be successful due to its excellent strength and durability, especially in older more sedentary patients. However, studies have shown a high incidence of loosening, notably in younger more active patients. Revision of cemented implants is often more difficult than the initial operation. Current surgical procedures are mechanical and tend to cause trauma to the surrounding bone tissue. A nonmechanical method to remove bone cement would greatly minimize bone damage. Attempts have been made to remove bone cement by laser, but with very little success. This study illustrates the use of dyes to selectively alter the ablation characteristics of PMMA in order to enhance cement ablation.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"244 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126179265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evidence of backsurface wear was visible by eye on most PE inserts and easily found by profilometry on all inserts directly below the point of loading on the proximal surface. Design parameters were shown to have a significant effect on micromotion. The consistency of the data for each design testifies to the quality control efforts of the manufacturers. The uniformity of the data over a million cycles indicates that the differences seen are design-related and not evidence of changes due to loading. Prolonged testing is needed to assess the long term stability of insert fixation.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126391160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All six brands were found to contain three types of volatile N-nitrosamines, namely, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-nitrosodibutylamine (NDBA), and N-nitrosopeperidine (NPIP). Migration studies into simulated saliva showed that over 80-100% of the volatile nitrosamines present in the matrix of the orthodontic elastics leached out into the simulated saliva within three weeks of incubation at 37/spl deg/C. It was concluded that more stringent controls at the manufacturing or processing stages, were necessary in order to reduce the levels of the above mentioned carcinogens in the orthodontic rubber bands.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124614805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors hypothesized that the manner in which the latissimus dorsi muscle is wrapped around the aorta will determine the amount of augmentation during counterpulsation. In dogs (n=9), they measured the cardiovascular effects of different muscle wrap techniques. Their results suggest that muscle wrap orientation determines the amount of augmentation during aortomyoplasty, and a new muscle wrap technique provides greater augmentation than wrap techniques previously reported.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121145008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, nerve releases have been performed utilizing a long incision on the medial side of the elbow leaving a long scar, usually with some damage to the cutaneous nerves around the elbow and associated morbidity, plus, on the average, a three-to-four day stay in the hospital, With endoscopic techniques, improved results should be possible with one small incision on the postero-medial side of the arm and a much more aesthetic result. This should be possible as an out-patient surgical procedure with decreased overall morbidity. Early mobilization after endoscopic surgery could also aid in an earlier return to work, resulting in a substantial reduction in health care costs. Safe endoscopic release of the ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel at the elbow with a single 1.5 centimeter incision is possible thus eliminating many problems associated with the commonly used open release procedure. The newly developed technique with associated instrumentation for this surgical procedure was proven to be feasible under the in vitro conditions of this investigation.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124139620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The exposure was a 10 G impact, with the seat back angle 5 degrees aft and a Dynamic Response Index of 12.5. In the series of tests one subject experienced an end plate mid-thoracic vertebral fracture which appeared to be produced by combined axial (+Gz) and hyper flexion loading. Lack of proper initial position and bracing appear to be the primary contributing factors to the observed response differences and possibly the resultant injury.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130996927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty-three cylindrical cancellous bone samples (bovine) were subjected to compressive cyclic strain excitation (triangle wave) with a maximum of 2000 /spl mu//spl epsi/. All specimens showed clear signs of time dependent material behavior: the force response lagged the displacement input in phase (/spl phi/=4.4/spl deg/-15.8/spl deg/), and contained a decaying transient term. The finite element model underestimated the transient behavior (/spl phi/=1.3/spl deg/-3.8/spl deg/) and predicted that less than 10% of bulk tissue stress was borne by the fluid. Decreasing the permeability value of the cancellous tissue was found to bring the model predictions into closer qualitative agreement with the experimental results, indicating the need for further study of this important parameter.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"98 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132738029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its primary role is to give strength to structures such as bone, tendon and arteries. Collagen develops in atherosclerotic lesions after infiltration of the intima by lipids and monocytes. The authors have developed a video-microdensitometry method to measure, precisely, the collagen mass fraction in sections of atherosclerotic lesion. Four rabbits were fed a declining low level cholesterol diet for 6 months. Lesions were produced primarily to the sides and downstream from branch junctions. Collagen levels were measured in the periorificial lesion of the left aorto-renal and 3rd aorto-intercostal branch sites. Each lesion was sampled in three locations: immediately lateral to both sides of the branch orifice, downstream from the orifice and at the edge of the lesion. The renal values for the downstream, lateral and edge sites were 16.8/spl plusmn/2.1 (SE)%, 16.7/spl plusmn/1.1%, and 17.0/spl plusmn/1.5% respectively, while the corresponding intercostal values were less for all sites, 12.58/spl plusmn/0.85%, 14.5/spl plusmn/1.3% and 10.67/spl plusmn/0.72%. The edge and downstream sites were significantly different between branches (p<0.05 by individual t-tests). The lateral measurements were not shown to be different (p=0.30). These results suggest that collagen is laid down in different amounts according to its position along the artery wall. Physical factors such as local stress/strain distributions may influence collagen production in atherosclerotic lesions.","PeriodicalId":294120,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1996 Fifteenth Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"54 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114298048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
