Numerous concerns have been centered towards indica rice, for a reason the study aimed at assessing the growth and if possible yield performance of some local rice varieties using invitro plant regeneration method. The study was conducted to observe the regeneration potential and also to establish a suitable in vitro plantlet regeneration protocol from mature seed explant of four rice varieties viz local rice Variety (Maizabuwa and Mai kwalli) and improved rice variety (Nerica and Faro 44). Maizabuwa was the only variety that successfully regenerated by proliferating shoot and root from the rice seed explant while Faro 44, had root development in the MS media under in-vitro condition. After transplanting, only Maizabuwa successfully germinated from the soil and plantlet growth was observed. No variations was observed in growth responses (plant height (cm), number of tillers, number of leaves and leaf area (cm2)) between in-vitro and soil regenerated (potted in soil) Maizabuwa and Faro 44 rice varieties, whereas variation in growth responses measured between the four varieties of rice directly potted in soil media was observed. Soil potted plants showed some significant differences in growth where Maizabuwa and Nerica varieties indicated to contribute to such variation. The study indicate that seeds of Maizabuwa local rice variety can be suggested to farmers if interested in large scale farming as the variety has shown observable tolerance to in-vitro regeneration and as well potted soil media conditions.","PeriodicalId":292938,"journal":{"name":"BIMA JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (2536-6041)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114881252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its high demand and abundance of poultry manure, farmers abuse the usage ofpoultry manure thereby causing soil nutrient imbalance and associated animal and human healthrisks, as well as surface water and groundwater contamination. This study investigated thegrowth performance, yields, and nutritional quality of Amaranthus cruentus under differentconcentration of poultry manure. Four different concentrations were used as treatments including5, 10, 15, and 20 kg/plot, while plot without the application of poultry manure served as thecontrol. It was observed that the growth parameters, such as plant height, stem girth, number ofleaves and leaf area of plants have significantly affected by the increase in the concentration ofthe poultry manure. Optimum growth and significant improvement in the proximate compositionsuch as ash and moisture content, fat, crude protein and fiber was achieved in poultry manureconcentration of 15 kg/plot relative to the other treatments. Further increase of the poultrymanure to the concentration of 20 kg/plot even though increase the growth performance, butlowered the available carbohydrate and total energy. Hence, the research recommended forfarmers the use of 15 kg/plot of poultry manure for an enhanced/higher growth of A. cruentus.Keywords: Amaranthus cruentus, growth performance, Nutritional composition, PoultryDroppings","PeriodicalId":292938,"journal":{"name":"BIMA JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (2536-6041)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132743997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Parabolic Dish Solar Collector (PDSC) with a thermalstorage system was been constructed and developed to harness solar beam radiation. The thermalstorage system and PDSC were constructed using locally and less cost materials such asgalvanized metal sheet and steel rods curved to obey the equation of a parabola then weldedtogether with circular support rings which was then lined with stainless steel reflector pasted forthe construction of PDSC. The receiver was made of blackened aluminium material incorporatedwith coiled copper tube carrying water as the heat transfer fluid. A parabolic dish which acts of aheat collector is used to track and reflects solar radiation at a single point (focus) on a receiverabsorber. Heat transfer from the solar collector to the storage tank was done by usingthermosyphonic principle to circulate the water (heat transfer fluid) between storage tank andheating system (receiver). The evaluation of thermal storage and analyzing the efficiency oftracking and non-tracking parabolic dish solar collector was carried out during month of June,2020 for the composite climate of Sokoto. The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of campusdevelopment in enhancing student’s sustainable activities by assessing the built environment ofBayero University, Kano. A total of 245 questionnaires were administered to students of seven (7)faculties with a view to assessing their satisfaction with campus environment, and 210questionnaires (87.5%) were retrieved. The questionnaire had three sections: (a) respondents’demographic characteristics; (b) assessment of 15 attributes on the physical characteristics ofoutdoor spaces; and (c) assessment of 16 attributes of infrastructural development. The questionswere structured based on 3-point Likert type scale with “Agreed = 3”, “Neutral = 2” and“Disagreed = 1”. Penalty scoring was assigned to the variables. Data collected were subjected tounivariate analysis of descriptive and inferential statistics, while Relative Satisfaction Index (RSI)was used to analyze the scores. The study showed that students were more satisfied with thefollowing outdoor attributes: Good environmental conditions (M = 2.090), well maintainedenvironment (M = 2.081), good spatial arrangement (M = 2.044). The respondents weredissatisfied with sport facilities adequacy which got M = 0.986; secured living environment (M =0.945) and lighting adequacy (M = 0.911). On the infrastructural development, the students weresatisfied with the administrative building exterior for having an appealing skyline (M = 2.090).Campus enhanced development (M = 2.044), availability and adequacy of learning facilities (M= 2.081). While they were dissatisfied with reading on outdoor furniture (M = 0.945);availability of social infrastructure within hostels (M = 0.911) and provision of campus cafeteria(M = 0.786). In this study, the background ionizing radiation level of scrapmetal dumpsites in Dutse Town, Jigawa State, Nigeria was assessed. A hand-held RadiationAlert Inspector (RAI) was used and a total of Ten (10) scrap metal dumpsites were randomlyselected. Four readings were taken in Counts Per Minute (CPM) and micro Sievert perhour(µSv/hr) at four (4) different selected points on each of the dumpsites. The value ofexposure dose rate (in µSv/hr) was used to estimate the Absorbed Dose D (in nGy/hr), AnnualEffective Dose (in mSvy-1) and Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk respectively. The results show thatthe mean exposure dose rate range from 0.01225 to 0.02125 µSv/hr. All the values of exposuredose rate were found to be below the standard value of 0.133 μSv/h. The mean value of theAbsorbed Dose D varies from 12.25 to 21.25 nGy/hr respectively. The calculated mean AnnualEffective Dose was found to be in the range of 0.015023 to 0.026061 mSvy-1. These values arebelow 1.0 mSvy-1 dose limit recommended by the International Commission on RadiologicalProtection (ICRP). The mean Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk range from 0.052582 to 0.091214 andare lower than the world limit of 0.29 × 10-3. The objective of this study therefore was to evaluate theeffectiveness of water leaf (Talinum triangulare) in extraction of iron (Fe) from contaminatedsoil. The research consisted of the following treatments: 0, 26, 52, 78, 104, 130 and 156 Femg/kg of soil. Iron nitrate was used as the source of iron. The plant data collected were leaf andflower count, plant height, stem diameter, number of branches, shoot weight, the root weight andiron concentration in the shoot. These were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Fisher’spairwise comparisons. The result showed that there was no significant effect of treatments ongrowth parameters except for leaf count. Plants that received 130 (Fe mg/kg) had significantlyhigher leaf count probably due to higher amount of nitrogen supplied by iron nitrate. There wassignificance difference in iron concentration in the shoots of water leaf plants among the varioustreatments when compared to the control. Mean maximum extraction of iron was 5815 mg/kgwith a standard deviation of 16.51. Lower leaf count and amounts of iron extracted at higherconcentration of iron in the soils are probably due to unset of iron toxicity in the water leaf plants.This indicates that water leaf plants possess great potential in phyto-extraction of iron and otherheavy metals from contaminated soil.","PeriodicalId":292938,"journal":{"name":"BIMA JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (2536-6041)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132710808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
