In traditional fuzzy logic, the expert's degree of confidence in each of his or her statements is described by a number from the interval [0,1]. However, due to similar uncertainty, an expert often cannot describe his or her degree by a single number. It is therefore reasonable to describe this degree by, e.g., a set of numbers. In this paper, we show that under reasonable conditions, the class of such sets coincides either with the class of all 1-point sets (i.e., with the traditional fuzzy set set of all numbers), or with the class of all subintervals of the interval [0,1], or with the class of all closed subsets of the interval [0,1]. Thus, if we want to go beyond standard fuzzy logic and still avoid sets of arbitrary complexity, we have to use intervals. These classification results shows the importance of interval-valued fuzzy logics.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116173120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Any possibilistic database has a canonical interpretation as a set of more or less possible regular databases, also called worlds. In order to manipulate such databases in a safe and efficient way, a constrained framework has been previously proposed, where a restricted number of querying operations are permitted (selection, union, projection and foreign key join which may handle attributes taking imprecise values). The key for efficiency resides in the fact that these operators do not require to make computations explicitly over all the more or less possible worlds. The division operation is dealt with in this paper.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114684982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this method, the structure of models is determined by the partitioning of the input domain. In order to obtain a high-accuracy model, it is necessary to determine the optimal number of partitions, i.e., structural optimization must be performed. This paper proposes a structural optimization technique for IDS modeling. The IDS model comprises multiple processing units, each of which is a modeling engine that develops a feature of the target system in the form of an easily comprehensible image on a two-dimensional plane. The proposed technique performs structural optimization with a small number of searches by analyzing the image information generated in the processing units instead of evaluating the model error using validation data.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"233 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114716939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed approach, the design is based on an output performance criterion, namely a response with minimum settling time and without overshoot, whatever the operation conditions may be. The application used for a demonstration is a three-tank-system where the connection between the tanks and the leakage in each tank are simultaneously taken into account (MIMO system). According to the proposed approach, two fuzzy PI supervisors are designed in order to modify on-line the parameters of two PI controllers. The implementation of this type of control in the simulator of the three-tank-system model and in the laboratory installation using rapid protyping, confirms through the results that the output performances are reached whatever the set points, the configuration and the initial water levels in the three tanks may be.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131003837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is particularly true when the decision environment becomes more complex. More organizational decisions are made now in groups than ever before. Group decision making is thus a process of arriving at a judgment or a solution for a decision problem based on the input and feedback of multiple individuals. At the same time in practice, multi-criteria problems at tactical and strategic levels often involve fuzziness in their criteria and decision makers' judgments. Relevant alternatives are evaluated according to a number of criteria. Fuzzy logic based multi-criteria group decision support is justified to analysis long-term options for Belgian energy policy in this paper.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"40 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130043358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A neural tree structure is considered with nodes of neuronal type, where Gaussian function plays the role of membership function. The total tree structure effectively works as a fuzzy logic system having system inputs and outputs. In the system, as result of special provisions, the locations of the Gaussian membership functions of non-terminal nodes happen to be unity, so that the system has several desirable features; it represents a fuzzy model maintaining the transparency and effectiveness while dealing with complexity. The research is described in detail and its outstanding merits are pointed out in a framework having transparent fuzzy modeling properties and addressing complexity issues at the same time. A demonstrative application of the model is presented from a demonstrative simple architectural design exercise and the favorable performance for similar applications is highlighted.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"6 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120812216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many instances optimum solutions to complex problems can be calculated using analytic or numeric approaches, but with significant barriers for practical use, such as computational complexity, sensitivity to parameter variations, and necessity to use many measured variables. In this study, a traditional optimization method is used to calculate off-line optimum solutions to an indoor environmental control problem at numerous operating points. These solutions are, in turn, used as exemplars to train an intelligent system such as a fuzzy logic system or a neural network, resulting in a control system whose behavior exhibits the desirable features of the family of optimum solutions. It has been shown that this methodology (named modeled optimized system -MOS) results in a controller for an indoor environmental system, which improves occupant satisfaction, saves energy, and can be implemented in a practical fashion.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123282847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A major barrier to effective drug selection is the lack of sufficient published information on the safety of drugs, particularly new drugs. In this paper, we propose an innovative multi-agent system, named ADRMonitor, for actively monitoring and detecting signal pairs implicating anticipated or potential adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of interest at a healthcare facility. Each intelligent agent is empowered by a fuzzy logic-based computational recognition-primed decision (RPD) model where fuzzy logic is utilized to represent, interpret, and compute vague and/or subjective information. We conducted a simulation study based on thousands of hypothetical patient cases that were created on the basis of real patients who were prescribed the drug Cisapride in a local hospital. At the current stage, our focus is to establish that the system can outperform the spontaneous reporting approach in identifying signal pairs. Under certain conditions (e.g., without agent collaboration), our simulation results show that (1) ADRMonitor detected 21 out of 27 (78%) ADRs when the optimized RPD model was used as a gold standard; (2) the number of ADRs detected by the agents is (many) more than those detected by the spontaneous reporting strategy (assuming 10% reporting rate - high end of rates reported in the literature) at any particular time. The second result implies that useful information could be collected more timely by the proposed agent system for formulary decisions.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124623863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This document studies and compares different control strategies, linear and non linear controllers applied to a Buck converter. There are mainly three control strategies treated in this paper. First an optimal control based design, by employing The quadratic performance index (QPI) is used, second a knowledge based fuzzy control is studied and third an artificial neural network (ANN) as a dynamic emulator of the fuzzy control is proposed. Some comparisons about the systems composed by the plant and a controller, in variation of a few plant parameters were made; in addition the computational time in simulation is compared between the two intelligent controllers.","PeriodicalId":292853,"journal":{"name":"NAFIPS 2007 - 2007 Annual Meeting of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society","volume":"294 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124222135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
