The channel models used are based on new radio channel measurement campaigns in urban and suburban type environments. Furthermore, one channel model was composed for a hilly terrain environment in order to verify the sensitivity of the results to different radio transmission environment. For comparison purposes, simulations are also performed by using typical mobile radio channel models with low mobile speeds. Several antenna space diversity schemes have been considered and their performance assessed under noise limited conditions. In addition, the performance of the downlink SIR-based closed loop power control was studied within an accurate WCDMA radio link simulation tool. According to the results the WCDMA system with dual antenna diversity combined with SIR-based closed loop power control can offer good performance in all the simulated channel models.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. In this paper multi-carrier CDMA is applied to a cellular overlay scenario which uses a fading channel model. It is shown that the diversity advantage realized with the use of multi-carrier CDMA allows the CDMA users to lower their transmitted powers, and the benefits to the narrowband system are substantial.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. The measurements were performed using a correlative channel sounder. A complex chirp signal with a bandwidth of 150 MHz was transmitted by a vertically polarized omnidirectional antenna and received by a 8+8 dual polarized planar antenna array. Measurements were taken at two different base station locations, one being suburban and the other urban. Using this data we characterize the radio channel in terms of azimuth and delay spread of the vertical and horizontal polarization.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. In order to apply packet transmission to the cellular spectrum where spectrum efficiency in the space-domain is important, this paper proposes a distributed dynamic channel assignment method where reuse partitioning is established by using one slot exclusively used for reservation and assigning packet transmission slots by the base station. Furthermore, several techniques are introduced to improve the performance. Computer simulation results show that the packet dropping probability is greatly decreased by the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. With the introduction of differential coding into the primary modulation and employing analytic receiving for primary differential demodulation, the proposed diffCDMA system improves the transmission characteristics of similar CDMA systems such as IS-95 and WcdmaOne IMT2000 for mobile communications at vehicle speeds of more than 100 mile/h mobiles even if a multi-ray environment. Previously, differential coding primary modulation has not been considered for use with CDMA owing to the strict sense synchronization required in demodulation, which suffered from bit error under such rapid multi-ray Rayleigh fading. However, its use is now possible in high speed and high capacity transmission since analytic receiving is being adopted into CDMA systems. In the demodulation procedure of the diffCDMA, the received waves are first detected after multi-ray propagation with certain inevitable errors both in phase and frequency of the recovered carrier for the pseudo synchronization primary demodulation during analytic receiving.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. One proposed solution is given by Jones and Wilkinson (see IEEE 46th Vehicular Technology Conference, Atlanta, p.904-8, 1996). It is based on applying a specific phase shift (not dependent on the codeword) to each dimension of the transmitted codewords. These phase shifts are known both to the transmitter and the receiver. Thus the phase shifts can be compensated for in the receiver without changing the distance properties of the code. Therefore, neither the rate nor the code performance is sacrificed. The phases need only once he computed off-line and the complexity of the system does not increase. Our contribution is to provide an algorithm to compute the phases that minimize the maximum peak to average power ratio taken over all possible transmitted signals. The new algorithm enables us to apply the Jones-Wilkinson method to various medium length as well as long codes of practical interest, a computational task for which no solution was known before. We apply our algorithm to some of the codes adapted for use in the physical layer of future wireless local area networks by the ETSI BRAN Hiperlan-II standardization committee. We report the computed reductions in peak to average power ratio.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. The receiver is assumed to use multiple antennas and the problem of estimating the start position of a data packet in the presence of spatially correlated co-channel interference is addressed. Each burst is assumed to contain a known training sequence, and in the paper metrics for finding the position of this training sequence are studied. More specifically, we examine the advantages of taking the spatial correlation of the co-channel interference into account, as compared with treating it as spatially white. Simulations and experimental results for transmission of normal GSM bursts in interference limited scenarios are presented.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. We describe the test bed which consists of an adaptive uplink system with dual polarization antennas and a downlink multibeam antenna with power control. Tests were conducted at 1900 MHz on drive routes in a typical cellular base station site located in a suburban environment. We implemented and tested the performance of downlink power control algorithms which slowly adjust the transmit power based on the downlink or uplink RSSI while adaptively adjusting the RSSI threshold based on the BER. The field test results show that our beamforming technique with a fixed multibeam antenna with power control provides additional gain and can closely track channel variations thereby requiring less margin and less average transmit power while maintaining the C/I level needed for good signal quality. We show that power control improves the C/I by 2 to 3 dB for a 1% BER for both vehicular and pedestrian fade rates when the uplink RSSI is used to estimate the downlink received power. The field test demonstrates the feasibility of using smart antennas on the uplink and downlink to increase both the range and capacity of the IS-136 system.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat. Due to the multi-tier requirements in future wireless communication systems, a mobile station needs to be able to switch in and out between an indoor pico cell and an outdoor micro/macro cell. To adapt to different transmission characteristics in different radio tiers, a new design that enables GPRS to work in low-tier TDD (time division duplex) mode is proposed. This new architecture consists of a new GPRS MAC protocol that can dynamically assign the transmission sequence so that optimal channel utilization is achieved. The performance is evaluated via simulation. It shows that the proposed architecture gives a high flexibility to GPRS in the TDD mode.","PeriodicalId":290531,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE 49th Vehicular Technology Conference (Cat.
