The AEPD data with 8 sensors (available in the literature) is numerically experimented with a Genetic Algorithm, although minimum of 4 sensors only are necessary for identifying the location. With eight sensors, four sensors considered at a time, form 70 (8C4) combination of sensors. The effect, implication and usage of superfluous sensor data in identifying the location with GA is analyzed and reported. Results are compared with Newton's method.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131660009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed algorithm is based on spectrum analysis of an impedance calculated using measured stator current and voltage signals. The main idea of proposed algorithm is to first normalize current and voltage signals in order to remove variations due to non-stationary operating conditions. Once normalized, the signals are processed to obtain the frequency spectrum of the impedance for each power phase and, subsequently, specific differences between phases are analyzed to identify faults. To verify these algorithms three induction motor cases were examined. Two were supplied direct-on-line and one supplied by variable-speed-drives. In the case of direct-online-supply one of the motors was known to be healthy and the other was known to have missing magnetic wedges while in the case of variable-speed-drive-supply one motor was known to have missing magnetic wedges. Measurements were recorded and processed using an ABB portable condition monitoring tool dedicated for electric motors. Experimental investigations show that the method successfully identifies defective cases.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134032791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bidirectional power flow due to the growing use of renewable energy and power electronics is among the most important players for such a change. Also, inter-area congestions are becoming more probable due to growing load levels (and patterns, e.g., extensive use of air condition, electric vehicles chargers). Aside of that, but in relation also to that, the electrical network is aging faster and faster. It is therefore necessary to search for innovative ways to operate the changing power systems in the most efficient and reliable manner. For this purpose, there is the need to know if and how loading and “health” condition of the components of the grid can affect the overall grid reliability. Online condition monitoring can provide, in a timely way, fundamental information which can be used for, e.g., probabilistic load flow and contingency analysis. The operational rules will not be derived from handbooks, but from the real conditions of electrical asset components. A methodology for exploiting online monitoring of electrical equipment will be discussed in this paper, and an highlighting case study will be presented.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134059819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Hilbert pattern of the 50 Hz mono-component signal extracted from the steady state vibration signature is analyzed and found to contain useful information needed for diagnosing different mechanicals faults. Since Hilbert transform can only be applied to a mono-component signal, Kaiser windowed FIR band pass filter is used to extract the monocomponent signal. Complex analytic signal is generated by using the mono-component signal as the real part and it's Hilbert Transform as the imaginary part. The concept of Hilbert transform for extraction of the instantaneous amplitude and frequency is utilized to extract important fault information from the non-stationary vibration signal and found to be quite efficient. This method does not require the analysis of fault frequency components which are slip dependent. Finally, an automatic diagnosis algorithm is attempted using SVM. The proposed method is almost independent of loading condition of the motor and has consistent performance even in presence of high level of noise.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123975708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Online monitoring of PDs can reduce the risk of catastrophic failure of transformers. Being non invasive and non interference prone, acoustic technique based PD on-line monitoring is advantageous. Acoustic emission (AE) signal produced by PD are detected by sensors mounted on the tank surface. AE signal attenuates while propagating from source to sensors. This attenuation is frequency dependent. Higher frequency component attenuates more than lower frequency components. PDs are classified according to frequency components of PDAE signal. This paper presents experimental results and analysis for frequency dependent propagation characterization of PDAE signal of laboratory simulated PDs in oil pressboard insulation system using point plane electrode system. The measured PDAE signals are analyzed using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The results highlight the possible use of frequency dependent propagation characteristics of PDAE signal for source location and for avoidance of misclassification.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124465358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The motors used in process control operation are subjected to dynamic speed along with load variations, thus most often fault occurs in rotating elements such as bearing. In literature, various bearing fault identification technique has been proposed with the help of time and frequency domain based features, most of these technique were tested in laboratory under fixed rotating speed and or fixed load. On the other hand influence of external vibration on the vibration signature not been studied in depth, which are very important mainly for the motors used in process plant. The present study revealed that identification of bearing faults harmonics with the help of accelerometer sensor during operation becomes difficult due to dynamic variation of speed, load, and mostly presence of non-stationary background vibrations, therefore some intelligent condition monitoring system is required for robust identification of faults.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124816306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But in practice, when a transformer remains in operating condition, the insulation inside the transformer is often stressed by the voltage that deviate significantly from sinusoid due to presence of harmonics. So, use of non-sinusoidal excitation voltage is required in advanced diagnostic technique for proper monitoring of insulation condition. Considering the facts, an arrangement has been made in laboratory that can generate sinusoidal as well as non-sinusoidal excitations over a wide frequency range. Square wave excitation has been chosen here as non-sinusoidal excitation. Samples with different preset moisture contents have been prepared in the laboratory for experimental purposes that emulate the oil-paper insulation of actual power transformer. Sinusoidal as well as square wave excitations over a wide frequency range are applied across the samples under controlled environmental conditions and corresponding dielectric response currents are measured. From applied excitation voltages and corresponding response currents, dielectric dissipation factors are calculated for both excitations. The parameters are then plotted and compared with each other. It may be observed that use of square wave excitation provides better information regarding the condition of insulation.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124949457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They offer several advantages over traditional Air Insulated Substations (AIS) which include superior dielectric strength, limited space requirements. Gas Insulated Busbar (GIB) is a critical part in a GIS since it serves as a component for tapping power for subsequent distribution to various interconnected components. Its failure would be detrimental and costly. Hence, manufacturers are faced with the task of minimizing the power loss in GIB. Standards stipulate stringent norms on the upper temperature rise limit for conductors and enclosures. Joule loss in a GIB is the primary source of heat for temperature rise and depends on the rated current, geometric dimension and resistivity. Further, skin-proximity effect results in a non-uniform current distribution leading to greater losses. This paper develops a 2-D finite element model of a GIB and employs magnetic analysis to estimate the power loss in the conductor and enclosure for rated current at maximum operating temperature. For the GIB taken up for study and analysis, losses are calculated using a theoretical method as per procedures laid out in CIGRE Working Group 21.12. The simulation and theoretical values are compared and cross-validated.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122327781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the Kind criterion a new technique to determine the simulation parameters which fits well the voltage-time curve is given. The simulated flashover values are compared to values from the literature and the leader progression model is recommended on this basis. The second part deals with travelling waves, complex superposition of those waves and the resulting maximum voltages within a GIL. The localization of the point of maximum voltage is very complex and depends on various parameters. Therefore it is recommended to segment the gas insulated transmission line into small segments of equal lengths. The result is a voltage profile over the GIL with its corresponding maximum voltage peak values. This technique is an efficient method to obtain comfortably the maximum voltages in GIL caused by the simulation set up.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124696598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under DC field, space charge accumulates within the bulk of the insulation in polymeric insulators. These accumulated charges cause local field intensification within the volume of the insulator, and subject the material to additional stresses, promoting aging. Therefore assessment of space charge in DC insulation is important. In this work, we study the effect of thermal aging on space charge accumulation in polyethylene, epoxy, and epoxy based nanocompositesunder DC applied field. From space charge measurements, trap depth and trap controlled mobility are estimated. Further, dielectric loss factor is estimated from depolarization current characteristics using Hamon approximation. Thermal aging causes the material to become increasingly lossy, and this is seen to be accompanied by a proportional change in space charge characteristics i.e. accumulated charge density, trap depth, and mobility.","PeriodicalId":290479,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 1st International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126786042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
