We all encounter forms (and instructions) in almost every facet of life, ranging from education (homework, tests, and applications), to work (employment forms or benefits forms), to life (tax forms, immigration forms, voter registration forms, government benefits forms, etc.). However, published research provides little behavioral insight specific to effectively designing form instructions. To wit, it suggests that users do not read instructions. Design manuals do offer some insights into form design; however, their suggestions tend to be trite and based on maintaining the status quo of form design. Our research will offer form designers an empirically substantiated preliminary set of concrete guidelines to optimize the design and presentation of instructions on complex forms, thus increasing the likelihood that both at-risk and expert users will notice and read critical instructions.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117179560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design research is the connective activity that helps us integrate specialized knowledge into meaningful solutions. We used a structured design process and various design research methods to facilitate the design and development of a software and hardware solution for a federal law enforcement agency to automate and standardize the processing and collection of a certain type of evidence. The methods we used were crucial in gathering the necessary evidence and presenting a synthesized, meaningful picture of the problems at hand to the client. This in turn led to a highly effective and collaborative partnership that resulted in a high-value application that helped standardize the current state of practice and advanced the mission of the federal law enforcement agency in the realm of intelligence gathering.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121085431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore the role of engineering judgment in the 2013 Congressional hearing on regulating the disposal of coal ash waste. We conclude that engineering testimony in a public policy debate suffers from a reductive, dichotomous distinction between technical judgment and policy ideas-a distinction based on the false assumption that engineers deliver professional verdicts that transcend economic and political interests. We propose that the most credible technical expert in a public policy deliberation is the engineer capable of acknowledging that technical expertise is not disinterested-that complicated interests and incommensurable goals are unavoidable. Consequently, educators preparing student engineers for professional practice are obliged to teach the rhetorical tools enabling students to recognize the interaction of engineering judgment and public policy and the myth of technical objectivity.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122178159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This difficulty increases even more when interaction takes place in the highly technical setting of a Computer Science and Engineering institution. Additional obstacles emerge due to language impairments (lack of a common language, low proficiency in the language(s) of instruction and/or research). This paper reports on a work in progress study based on the interviews and surveys conducted in 11 research labs, with supervisors of 9 nationalities, and 22 students of 12 nationalities, mostly MSc and PhD students, with 13 of them working as TAs instructing undergraduate students. Altogether, there are currently 21 research advisers of 11 nationalities at our engineering university who have experience supervising international students (45 regular students and 5 exchange students, constituting 5% of the total undergraduate and 30% of the graduate student population), whereby those students predominantly tend to choose, if possible, supervisors with whom they share their native language. Based on the results derived from the interviews and 2 cultural sensitivity and awareness questionnaires, certain observations and recommendations regarding the role of culture in (mis)communication are put forward, with differences in supervisor-students perception and levels of cultural awareness pointed out.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126570459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a study of Irish technical communicators' perceptions of their field. The research methods include a survey, online discussions and interviews, and the findings are analyzed using the lenses of professionalization and community of practice theories. This study is exploratory, because no previous studies have examined the Irish context for technical communication. Considering the scope of both professional and communities of practice frameworks, the study is confined to four significant themes: education, technical communication practice, value and status, and professional and community structures. The findings indicate that Irish technical communicators exhibit traits of communities of practice (such as joint enterprise and shared repertoires). They also identify with their job title and practice. A key finding is that many Irish technical communicators have a keen appetite for community involvement. This enthusiasm notwithstanding, many barriers impede professionalization, not least the low visibility of the role in Ireland, limited evidence of professionalizing activity, and the potential for career stagnation.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132632300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computer languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and ActionScript support the creation of electronic texts that are visual, interactive, and hyperlinked. Creating those texts at the level of source code, as programming, creates significant affordances for students to learn more deeply the dynamic rhetorical implications of information they must convey to their audiences electronically. Each panelist describes concrete classroom examples that demonstrate significant student learning achieved through code-level text construction that builds upon standard, familiar curricular emphases on writing, rewriting, and research.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133785524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new course, situated within a particular engineering discipline, attempts to bridge this gap by introducing these students to several common professional documents such as CVs and cover letters. In addition, students write a paper investigating academic discourse in their area of specialization, based on library and ethnographic research. This paper also presents various qualitative results from the students' in-class comments and written course evaluations, along with the instructor's comments and plans for future course offerings.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124186472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(2) What can their critical lens teach about distance education practices in the 21st century? Following an exploration of the critiques these views introduce, we explore the methods individuals use to invert or subvert the results of this learning process along with other applicable critiques of the Frankfurt School of thought. These inquiries and explorations further the conversation of online education by demonstrating deficiencies in the online learning process, addressing power struggles, and creating gaps for further research.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124457054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After outlining the contested territory of online work-related talk, we present a professional writing assignment based on a recent court case involving social media and labor relations: Shepherd vs. McGee. This assignment introduces three key concepts that students can use to analyze the case and formulate a revised Social Media Strategy for the plaintiff: kairos, appropriateness and possibility. After articulating learning outcomes for the assignment, we review methods for assessing multimodal writing and adapt Ball's Kuhn+2 assessment criteria to our assignment. We conclude by discussing potential adaptations of this assignment for contexts within and beyond professional writing.","PeriodicalId":290419,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126884927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
