Old age is a natural part of a human life cycle and is a complex, genetically conditioned process which can be modified by environmental factors. Forecasts presented by the Central Statistical Office (Polish government agency concerned with collecting and publishing statistical data) indicate a clear tendency for extension of average life expectancy. It is estimated that in year 2035, one in four people will be above the age of 65. A high number of elderly people in the society concerns Poland as well. The need for medical and social services is relatively growing. The elderly are also the main beneficiaries of health care in terms of care benefits. The article presents the attitudes of nurses both towards the elderly people and their own ageing in terms of the general public. Results of own research has been compared with that made by the Centre of Public Opinion Research (Polish opinion polling institute).","PeriodicalId":289564,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology and geriatric research","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125120602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also discusses fictive carers’ perception of whether this intervention has improved the well-being of their relative. \u0000Design/methodology/approach: This study followed the fictive carers of 30 service users who were assessed as having high care needs and living alone over a six-week period. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken at three intervals during the six weeks. The carers were asked to assess their subjective well-being at the start, middle and end of the study. \u0000Findings: The key findings were that all 30 fictive carers expressed an improvement in their subjective well-being and that of their older family member, who appeared more settled as a result of this model of care. \u0000Originality/value: This study provides an insight into the impact of outcome-focused homecare with older people as perceived by their fictive carers. Previously, research has established that outcome-focused care increased the subjective well-being of the older person from their own perspective. This study also demonstrated that this model of outcome-focussed care also improved the subjective well-being of the fictive carers themselves. These findings will help healthcare practitioners consider the use of this model of homecare as a potential alternative to providing separate support packages for the fictive carers.","PeriodicalId":289564,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology and geriatric research","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128633923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to this the paper will consider whether any discernible differences were established between the two models of care delivery. Design/methodology/approach: This study followed eight homecare workers delivering time and task homecare and an alternative outcome-focused care model. Participant observations were undertaking with the workers who were followed delivering care to 16 older people with 8 older people were selected from each intervention group. In addition to the participant observations 4 follow up interviews were conducted with the homecare workers and 16 follow up interviews were conducted with the participants. Findings: The key findings were that the model and manner in which homecare is delivered have a profound impact upon the homecare workers and the older person’s ability to form a mutually satisfactory caring relationship. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of CKD among the elderly population in primary care settings and to investigate the extent to which serum creatinine reflects kidney function. \u0000Methods: All the patients aged 65 years old and over who came for laboratory tests in an urban primary health center for six months were invited to participated. Additional data on their age, gender, body weight (kg) and their medical history on chronic diseases were collected. The Cockcroft-Gault equation was used for the estimation of the participants' kidney function. \u0000Results: 325 patients participated in the study with mean age 73.9 years old (±6.0, min 65-max 91), out of which 146 male (44.9%). According to the estimated creatinine clearance, which in turn estimates glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in ml/min, eGFR: 60-89 was found in 50.5% (164), eGFR: 30-59 in 26.2% (85) and eGFR: 15-29 in 2.2% (7). Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho0 between age and eGFR was -0.52, p<0.001. Serum creatinine (mg/dl) was ranging from 0.7 to 1.7 (mean 1.1) in patients with eGFR: 30 ml/min to 59 ml/min and 1.6 to 3.2 (mean 2.1) in the group with eGFR: 15 ml/min to 29 ml/min. \u0000Conclusion: General practitioners should routinely estimate kidney function in their in the older patients. Since the normal serum creatinine reference interval does not necessarily reflect a normal kidney function, GFR equations may facilitate its estimation in every day practice. Early identification of CKD, dosage reduction of renally excreted drugs and timely referral to a nephrologist is feasible and should be pursued within primary care.","PeriodicalId":289564,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology and geriatric research","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128248719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
