Changes at the beginning of the 5th millennium BC are especially visible in the inventories of pottery. Due to the characteristic features of these inventories a number of units were identified, which are collectively referred to as the Lengyel-Polgar Cycle (L-PC). In the area of Igołomia region on the Vistula River the following L-PC units functioned – the Malice culture (c. 4800/4700-4500 BC), the Pleszów-Modlnica group (c. 4600/4500-4300/4200 BC) and the Wyciąże-Złotniki group (c. 4100-3700 BC). The vanishing of these communities around 3700 BC was caused primarily by the spread of the Funnel Beaker culture. This cultural complex emerged as a result of the adaptation of communities with a hunter-gatherer economy to an agricultural economy. In the region east of Kraków the cemeteries of the elite population of this culture from the 4th millennium BC discovered in Karwin, Proszowice district, and Rudno Górne, Kraków district, deserve our attention. The state of reconnaissance of settlement is far from satisfactory here. From the final Eneolithic period primarily cemeteries of the Corded Ware culture (around 2800–2300 BC) are known. Falling within this age range is probably the only burial mound in the area, in Igołomia, which yielded a niche grave of the Corded Ware culture within the eastern part of its cover. Another cemetery was investigated in Rudno Górne, where niche graves of the culture in question were found dug into the embankments of Funnel Beaker culture megalithic graves from the middle Eneolithic period. From the early Bronze Age, the richest and most cognitively significant sites of the Mierzanowice culture (around 2200–1600 BC) are concentrated on loess hills rising above the valleys of Ropotek and Rudnik. They are both cemeteries and large settlements. Particularly valuable results were obtained during research on the cemetery in Szarbia, where as many as 44 graves were found. The lifestyle that had been led since the dawn of humanity, seasonal migration to search for sources of food, changed relatively abruptly. In Central Europe, including Poland, this process was associated with the appearance of the first farmers known under the archaeological term of the Linear Pottery culture (LBK). Intensive spreading and concentration of settlement occurred at the end of the first phase, reaching peak intensity in the middle phase. Most large, permanently inhabited settlements with longhouses are dated to this period, similar to in other centres in the Odra and Vistula basins. About half of the 1,600 sites associated with LBK in Poland are located in south-eastern Poland. One of the sections of this Institute was to review human races within the General Government. Thus, in many localities of southern Poland, people representing various ethnic groups were subjected to anthropological measurements and medical surgeries. Among others, 378 adults were examined in Wawrzeńczyce. This place was selected as an example of a native Polish village. This event was not permanently remembered in the collective memory of the residents, but thanks to the extensive collection of materials from German research discovered after several decades in the National Anthropological Archives in Washington, the basic facts about this event could be reconstructed and the value of the documentation collected at that time could be recovered. The German invasion in September 1939 marked the beginning of a five-year occupation which brought about radical changes in the system of governing the region. Self-government was abolished and the local administration, staffed by Poles, became the lowest link in the German power structure. The Germans pursued their strategic aims in political, social and economic terms. They exploited the enforced loyalty of commune administrations, which were given tasks requiring them to be fully available. Among other things, this included the provision of obligatory quotas of agricultural and livestock produce, the procurement of labour for the Third Reich, and the rationing of food and industrial goods. Actions of this kind provoked resistance among the population. Kozik","doi":"10.33547/igolomia2020.12","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33547/igolomia2020.12","url":null,"abstract":"The presented chapter describes the events that took place in the area of Igołomia and Wawrzeńczyce during the January Uprising of 1863–1864. These lands, being the southernmost part of the Russian Empire, bordering the Austrian Empire, witnessed in the first year of the uprising of a series of skirmishes of varying intensity. The main part of the study focuses on the presentation of military events, including the causes and courses of two battles fought at Igołomia in March and May 1863. Much space in particular is devoted to the second battle of Igołomia, from May 4, 1863, whose significance goes far beyond the issues of local history. An equally important part of the article is an attempt to present the attitudes of the peasant population towards the insurgent events of 1863–1864. Discussion of this issue was preceded by a brief description of the socio-economic situation of the former Miechów district in the pre-uprising period, with particular emphasis on the lands of the today commune of Igołomia-Wawrzeńczyce. Tunia","doi":"10.33547/igolomia2020.09","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33547/igolomia2020.09","url":null,"abstract":"After the Early Slavic period a number of changes took place, which was manifested, among others, in the construction of strongholds – fortified seats of local power. This stage of Slavic development, lasting approximately 200 years from the turn of the 7th and 8th century on, is called the Tribal phase. At that time, the areas of western Lesser Poland belonged to the Vistulan tribe. Their central seat was the stronghold on Wawel Hill in Kraków. At the end of the 10th century the Piasts began to play an active military and political role in the Vistula River basin. Their successful expansion gave rise to the Early State phase. After 966, as Christianity progressed, inhumation replaced cremation as the burial rite. The oldest row-arranged cemeteries were founded on the upper Vistula from the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries. They were used until end of the 12th century, or longer. Two such cemeteries were examined in the study area, in Wawrzeńczyce and Stręgoborzyce. They were abandoned with the consolidation of the parish network and the establishment of church cemeteries in the 13th century.
