For any states of the systems, the monitoring server must provide fresh information with a stabilized load. In this paper, we propose an adaptive monitoring method that generates the monitoring schedule for each state of the target systems. The schedule regulates the processes for updating information cache to keep the required freshness and to stabilize the monitoring load. Since the problem for schedule generation is classified in NP-hard, we propose an approximation algorithm. Results from experiments with system reconfigurations show that the adaptive monitoring method improves the variation coefficients of CPU usages and network traffics of monitoring server by at most 80%.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128672223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper develops a framework of coping strategies for autonomic systems to deal with uncertain situations, new environments, conflicting sensory inputs and diverse mission objectives. Important aspects of the coping strategies include learning mechanisms, for which the concept of dream functions is presented. More sophisticated autonomic systems are likely to involve collaboration and interaction with other units (autonomic and human). For successful mission goals it is suggested that a fairness and collaboration approach to resource allocation will provide better results than self-interest strategies. Meta-games and Hyper-games provide a mechanism for encapsulating fairness parameters. The paper argues ethics has to be considered explicitly when developing more sophisticated autonomic systems.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130330951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is now a very common expectation that the cost/performance ratios will be constantly improving while always offering better services and novel IT features. To fit such expectations, enterprise IT systems should be architected differently. In general, cost savings should be used to finance innovative projects fitting into enterprise architecting blueprints. In this paper we give a top-level view into typical enterprise IT system and outline four architecting principles to guide the implementation of these innovative projects articulated together as 'renewal program' across entire IT. After describing in more depth each principle, we conclude with some practical challenges and outline a few interesting research directions. We also share some practical insights from an internal HP project.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126995081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exogenous management regards autonomicity as a property of relationships between elements, rather than a property of the elements themselves. We explain the concept of exogenous management, and show how a number of desirable attributes that support autonomicity flow from this approach. These attributes include self- management; separability; recursive composition; and grounding through the monitoring of interactions. We will show how these attributes help enhance the adaptability and control the complexity of context- aware compositions of services. We then discuss how this exogenous approach to management has been implemented in the ROAD (Role-oriented Adaptive Design) programming framework. This framework is extended by software developers to create service compositions whose level of autonomicity can be incrementally modified at runtime.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132137242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rather than modelling explicit workflow graphs of business processes, this paper proposes presentation of annotated versions of the natural language policy documents as a user interface indicating both the status of task progress and appropriate potential progress routes. A deontic adaptation of the event calculus is presented to monitor the normative state of policy compliance. A non-tree-based document annotation scheme is used to allow a natural language text to be linked with a logic program developed to represent its intentions. The approach is demonstrated by the encoding and presentation through a web application of a section of the United States Food and Drugs Administration regulations.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115056156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, they present a combination of unique features, such as their autonomy and capability to move to remote computers to process data there and save remote communications. Many mobile agent platforms have been developed since the late nineties. While some of them have been abandoned, others continue releasing new versions that fix bugs detected or offer new interesting features. Moreover, other new platforms have appeared in the last few years. So, a common problem when one wants to benefit from mobile agent technology to develop distributed applications is the decision about which platform to use. In this paper, we provide an up-to-date evaluation of existing mobile agent platforms. We compare them qualitatively and evaluate their performance.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125182736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data fusion is performed using Bayes theorem and then the local maps are updated. A diffusivity concept is defined to describe the robots' extent apart from one another. The immune optimizing strategy is introduced to select goal points since it is a problem of optimized combination. In order to minimize repeated coverage and improve the exploration efficiency, the evaluation function considers the cost, revenue and diffusivity. Simulation examples show that the proposed method is effective for the stated problem and the immune optimizing strategy is more efficient than other strategies.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133005426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fuzzy constraint-directed approach involves the fuzzy probability constraint where each fuzzy constraint has a certain probability, and the fuzzy instance reasoning where each instance is represented as a primitive fuzzy constraint network. The proposed approach via fuzzy probability constraint can not only cluster the opponent's information in negotiation process as proximate regularities to increase the efficiency on the convergence of behavior patterns, but also eliminate the bulk of false hypotheses or beliefs to improves the effectiveness on beliefs learning. By using fuzzy instance method, our approach can reuse the prior opponent knowledge to speed up problem-solving, and reason the proximate regularities to acquire desirable results on predicting opponent behavior. Besides, the proposed interaction method enables the agent to make a concession dynamically based on expected objectives. Moreover, experimental results suggest that the proposed framework allowed an agent to achieve a higher reward, fairer deal, or less cost of negotiation.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131517426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deployment encompasses many actions like the discovery of resources and enquiry about their current state, selection among the different versions of the software according to these states, robust, scalable and rapid software provisioning, installation and start-up, and eventually software installation monitoring, updating and unprovisioning. Our solution addresses all those steps through an integrated and scalable approach implemented using the standard Java JMX and the ProActive Grid technologies, which we illustrate in the context of OSGi gateways.","PeriodicalId":288478,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'07)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132973963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
