In order to maintain the independence of the poles a return path for the current is needed. If a ground return cannot be used a neutral conductor must be installed, either on the same structures as the pole conductors or on separate structures. A fault on one pole of such a system may cause a fault on the neutral and a fault on the other pole; therefore, a fault must be efficiently cleared. They may occur due to routine operations, network reconfigurations or reaction on protection signals. Depending on the network configuration and parameters such events my lead to external overvoltages and result in additional stresses on the insulation system. The paper presents influence of serial choke on damping of switching transients in distribution transformers. The suppression of transient rise time will be shown in configuration involving distribution transformers connected to low loss cable lines and medium voltage breaker. Such phenomena are especially typical for industrial networks where switching operations are very frequent. The protection of distribution transformers with a serial choke is a new approach dedicated to environment prone to transients characterized by high steepness. Corona sound data used in this study are acquired from an experimental set-up when applying 50 Hz AC high voltage at different levels to the line conductor. Recorded sound data of corona and the voltage magnitudes are applied to a neural network (NN). To analyze corona sound, linear prediction coefficients are used. Insulators were tested as they are now used on site and also with different configurations of booster sheds. Images recorded by ultra-violet (UV) camera were used to help the investigations on the effectiveness of booster sheds. By comparing UV images of the insulator being stressed with high voltage under heavy rain with and without booster sheds, it was possible to observe how significant the reduction on the flashover formation process is when booster sheds are used. The effectiveness of booster sheds was also quantified by determining the disruptive discharge of the insulator with and without them. The results of these studies can also be considered as contribution to national and international standard technical committees to improving the standardized procedure for tests on ultra high voltage (UHV) insulators under heavy artificial rain. The layer of air adjacent to the conductor is also heated. In this paper the effect of the higher temperature on corona is investigated experimentally. This study project is carried out to achieve this purpose, by putting forward one new type of lightning ground down lead modes, that is, the ground down lead suspended in the internal side. The establishment of partial discharge (PD) on-line monitoring system is significant to grasp the running state of GIT accurately and guide its maintenance. According to the structure and operating characteristic of the field GIT, an outer ultra high frequency (UHF) microstrip patch antenna (MPA) sensor for detecting the partial discharge in field GIT was designed, some effective methods for expanding bandwidth are utilized in the design process, such as choosing the material, thickness, adding impedance matching and multi-tuning loop. The effective working bandwidth of the antenna is 340∼440 MHz, and the relative bandwidth is 25.6%, especially the maximal gain reaches 5.38dBi. MPA sensor was installed in the GIT insulator of cable section of ingoing line, fan duct, radiating pipe of 110kV and 10kV side. Online monitoring system for GIT was established and monitoring system software based on C# was developed. To investigate the influence of vegetable oil on the thermal aging rate of oil paper, Kraft paper impregnated with mineral oil and vegetable oil underwent thermally accelerated aging at three different temperatures. Degree Polymerization (DP) of Kraft paper was measured to indicate the aging degree of insulation paper. The aging rate of paper in mineral oil and vegetable oil was compared quantitatively, and results showed that vegetable oil retarded paper's degradation rate and extended its useful lifetime. The reasons contributing to such phenomenon were analyzed using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and molecular simulation software. Due to the larger interaction force between water and natural ester molecules, water molecule was easily bonded with natural ester, weakening the hydrolysis process of cellulose. Cellulose was chemically modified by natural ester during thermal aging process, and the reactive - OH (hydroxyl) groups on the cellulose became esterified with fatty acid esters. The water molecule was firmly bounded to the ester groups on glucose produced by esterification. Average water contact angle on the super-hydrophobic PDMS/nano-silica hybrid coating reached 1610. The super-hydrophobic PDMS/nano-silica hybrid coating had a rough surface with micro/nanometer dual-size structure. Icing experiment was carried out to investigate the anti-icing properties of the super-hydrophobic coating on insulator strings. AC icing flashover voltages of the two types of insulator strings were investigated. Results showed that the super-hydrophobic PDMS/nano-silica hybrid super-hydrophobic coating excellently restrained the icing on insulator strings. We present the hardware and software solutions based on OLTC drive power comparison, which are especially useable for relatively aged transformers. We present the constructed device and its abilities. We explain that the integration of the applied methodology with an expert system is the best approach. We describe how the expert system forms warnings, alarms and directions which are based on reasonable factors.
