The layout of the documents can be defined by style sheets or by a language itself. XML languages can be combined to get the desired set of features for a document. Those documents are called compound documents. Also, multimedia applications can be defined using XML. In this paper, we have defined general requirements for a compound documents' CSS layout engine, which can be used in an XML user agent. The requirements relate to features of the layout engine, devices in which it can operate, and interfaces of the cooperating components. In addition, we describe our own implementation of a layout engine, which is done according to the requirements and operates in different devices.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126895681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper focuses on the investigation of the learner's cognitive ability level (CAL) modeling based on the cognitive behavior during the learning process. It is based on high order thinking abilities according to Bloom's taxonomy. The investigation attempts to define the indicators of navigational behavior that could better discriminate the CAL classes defined. The learner's behavior assessment was performed by the analysis of the Web actions carried out in a free navigation content module. In order to accomplish our objective we have adopted an exploratory empirical and inductive research framework. We expect that the main benefit resulting from the adjustment of the instructional presentation to the learner's CAL characteristic is the possibility of designing pedagogical strategies and didactic tactics that provide the learner with an in-depth learning and more complex thinking.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122548655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As Web services are based on open standards, it lets the integration of different kinds of software components, including the wireless and mobile applications. However, the Post PC World, dominated by mobile devices, is not completely ready to Web Service accesss, due to memory and processing constraints. Specific architectures for an easy and clear Web Services integration are required. This article introduces the main aspects related with Web services access from mobile devices. Two proposals are presented for high and low end mobile devices, using Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) Web services API (WSA) and short messaging service (SMS) respectively, which define a specific architecture for each case.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117299690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of storage systems provide assistance for this task. However, current RDF database systems do not use optimized indexes, which results in a poor performance behavior for querying RDF. There are three main data types in the Web: content (text, multimedia), structure (links that form a graph) and Web usage (transactions from Web logs). We emphasize the last type of data, in particular a new subfield called query mining. Server logs of search engines store traces of queries submitted by users, which include queries themselves along with Web pages selected in their answers. Query mining is based in the fact that user queries in search engines and Web sites give valuable information on the interests of people. In addition, clicks after queries relate those interests to actual content. The framework is based on a new vectorial representation of query traces which allows to treat them similarly to documents in traditional information retrieval systems. Also, we consider the problem of reducing the bias in the selections caused by the particular answer rankings computed by the search engine. We show the application of the clustering framework to two problems: relevance ranking boosting and query recommendation. Finally, we show with experiments the effectiveness of our approach. The same ideas can be applied to advertising campaigns in search engines and the automatic generation of a pseudo-ontology for queries.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133774400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, there is also a lack of control of the content accessed by users when browsing Web pages. In some situations this lack of control may be undesired. For instance, parents may not desire their children to have access to offensive content available on the Web. In particular, accessing Web pages with nude images is among the most common problem of this sort. One way to tackle this problem is by using automated offensive image detection algorithms which can filter undesired images. Recent approaches on nude image detection use a combination of features based on color, texture, shape and other low level features in order to describe the image content. These features are then used by a classifier which is able to detect offensive images accordingly. In this paper we propose SNIF - simple nude image finder - which uses a color based feature only, extracted by an effective and efficient algorithm for image description, the border/interior pixel classification (BIC), combined with a machine learning technique, namely support vector machines (SVM). SNIF uses a simpler feature model when compared to previously proposed methods, which makes it a fast image classifier. The experiments carried out depict that the proposed method, despite its simplicity, is capable to identify up to 98% of nude images from the test set. This indicates that SNIF is as effective as previously proposed methods for detecting nude images.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114619577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An interesting way to achieve this is to provide such scope delimitation by means of context information. This process of linking can be tailored according to contextual constraints explicitly provided by users. We propose linking services enhanced with context information captured from everyday presentations. We present the LinkDigger context service, which creates hyperlinks following information obtained from users.
