Although users do not have to know information retrieval techniques, the proposal of this work is to improve query results by using a \"specialist\" that implements these techniques. For this, a semantic refiner is proposed. This refiner acts as a specialist in information sciences and prepares, using linguistic resources, an appropriate search strategy that represents the user's information need. The semantic refinement consists on three steps. First, it guides the user for sense disambiguation of the words submitted by him. Then, it allows the user to select concepts hierarchically related to reduce the amount of documents to retrieve. Finally, it expands semantically concepts to increase the amount of documents to be retrieved. A prototype is implemented using WordNet as linguistic resource, and experimental results are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132589285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surveys indicate that companies are suffering staggering financial losses due to Web security issues. Analyzing the underlying causes of these security breaches shows that a significant proportion of them are caused by straightforward design errors in systems and not by failures in security mechanisms. There is significant research into security mechanisms but there is little research into the integration of these into software design processes, even those processes specifically designed for Web Engineering. Security should be designed into the application development process upfront through an independent flexible methodology that contains customizable components.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130006068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of these characteristics such as low processing power and memory capacity restrict the access to multimedia content. Researchers have then focused on making automatic system adaptations in order to present content according to devices' capabilities. Most of the works on this area include the description of hardware and software devices' features using the CC/PP specification. However, the indiscriminate and direct use of CC/PP makes it difficult to generate consistent descriptions when using the same device into different contexts. The novel of this paper is an alternative method to describe devices' features. This method aims to facilitate context-based content adaptation decisions to be made before content delivery. This paper also presents an application for content adaptation that uses our method.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121399888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The semantic Web has the potential to provide the Web services infrastructure with the information it needs through formal languages and ontologies for reasoning about service description, meaning of exchanged messages, etc. In this paper, we analyze several current approaches that implement semantic Web services by focusing on activities they are required to perform. These activities involve discovery, selection, mediation, and composition. We particularly analyze and compare how the approaches implement these activities by using semantics resources. We present a framework for comparison, which is used to highlight strengths and weaknesses as well as to detect topics for further research.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125054346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because autonomously understanding video content is an open research problem, annotations usually complement video data with descriptors that provide a synthetic representation of their content. The annotation process generates high-level metadata that are the base for organizing video repositories and later enables content-oriented video access. This paper presents a framework, called CANNOT - Coyote annotation, for supporting video annotation process. Some real applications developed by using proposed framework are also presented.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126610414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate the model characteristics using a Web warehouse. The Web data in the warehouse is modeled as a graph, where nodes represent Web pages and edges represent hyperlinks. In the model, objects are always sets of nodes and belong to one class. We have physical objects containing attributes directly obtained from Web pages and links, as the title of a Web page or the start and end pages of a link. Logical objects can be created by performing predefined operations on any existing object. In this paper we present the model components, propose a set of eleven operators and give examples of views. A view is a sequence of operations on objects, and it represents a way to mine information in the graph. As practical examples, we present views for clustering nodes and for identifying related item sets.","PeriodicalId":286939,"journal":{"name":"Third Latin American Web Congress (LA-WEB'2005)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131594205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
