Bulabois","doi":"10.1088/0335-7368/5/5/302","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1088/0335-7368/5/5/302","url":null,"abstract":"In order to measure great vibrational amplitudes that cannot be approached with the holographic methods or those that bring the properties of the scattered coherent waves into play, two techniques have been developed allowing to reach the constant vibrational amplitude lines of a mechanical structure. The methods of projected fringes are applied when considering that the constant amplitude lines of a vibrating surface can be classed as contour lines of a static tridimensional object. To this end, we have been brought to fix in one or two particular positions the deformation of the fringes system that modulates the repartition of intensity connected with the structure by using a stroboscopic lightning of the latter. The first method consists in visualizing the contour lines of the vibration on the surface by means of an optical filtering method applied to a single system of distorted fringes. The second one leads to the determination of the same contour lines from the variation of the visibility of an interference phenomenon that results from the superposition of two symmetrical systems of distorted fringes. The experimental results bear on the calculations that have been made. Further, three additionnal properties of such type of mounting would be useful. First would be a single grating motion, an attractive possibility being a simple rotation of the grating. Second, fixed entrance and exit slits would simplify the mechanical aspects of many experimentals set up, particularly when using experimental chambers for optical testing in this spectral range. A last feature would be to use the grating either at normal incidence to avoid an excess amount of astigmatism in the spectral range 4 000 to 500 A either at large angle of incidence, attempting to extend the short wavelenght limit, through the increased reflectivity associated with the total reflection phenomenon. The first order focusing properties of ruled concuve gratings, derived from Fermat's principle, are then well known and various mountings working in the gaussian image plane are currently used in this spectral range. If the well known Seya Namioka monochromator fulfil the two first conditions, the angle 2 Θ between the incident and diffracted beam is a constant equal to 70° 30'. This angle is chosen to minimize the deviations from the rowland conditions and therefere this mounting satisfy approximatively to the condition T + T' = 0 (eq. 3), T and T' being respectively the equation for the object and image tangential focus. In this mounting as in the Rowland circle or Wadsworth mounting the high order terms in the equations of Fermat's principle as well as the possibility of balancing different aberration terms has been ignored. It is well known, however, from lens design studies that a great improvement of an optical element can be achived, by using the phase balancing method and by a proper consideration of the focussing properties in both geometrical and diffraction theories. The principle of this method is to replace the spherical reference sphere centered about the gaussian image by a new reference sphere centred about the brightest part of a line at the best plane of focus. This method involves, then, a change of focus in order to decrease the amount of aberration (eq. 7) and consequently ignores all mathematical solutions of the first order focussing condition. If the wavefront aberration over the pupil is small with respect to the wavelength λ, the diffraction pattern is only slightly modified. Then by using the strehl criterion we obtain first the value of the parameters characterizing the change of focus and second the optimum ruled width W0 for a given height L0 of the ruled area for which the residual aberrations 01 (W2/R2) can be neglected. A generalized focussing condition in which the main aberration terms (except for astigmatism) are balanced by the defocussing term is consequently derived from the Fermat's principle (eq. 4). The high coefficient of reflection of such grids between 40 and 1 000 microns suggests their use as semi-transparent plates in the construction of far infrared and submillimeter Fabry-Perot interference filters. The possibility of combining three or more grids to obtain filters of wider band-pass will also be presented. We shall discuss construction techniques for Fabry-Perot type filters of both fixed and variable separation. When the point sources are in phase opposition, an infinite degree of resolution is possible because the composite intensity at the middle point is always zero. Two basic problems must be solved: scaling the images according to wavelength and avoiding false images. The former can be solved by a computational step, during synthesis of he holograms, or during reconstruction. The latter problem, false images, can be solved by the reconstruction geometry or by using multi-emulsion color film. The wavelentgh-selective absorption of the different layers in color film can be used to selectively absorb light of an undesired color while transmitting light of the desired color at a given point on the film. This effect allows the spatial multiplexing of binary detour-phase holograms. In addition to density variations, there exist corresponding phase variations in color film, particularly Kodachrome II, making onaxis holograms possible. Furthermore, the phase variations can be used to eliminate an undesired color by selectively diffracting it off to the sides. This telescope, an old instrument renewed on a financial support from I. N. A. G., is briefly described. Mechanical and optical improvements are then detailed, in particular the performance, in the optical laboratory of the Nice Observatory, of two mirrors in cervit, and a cooled focus device for solar observations. The site, which is sunny around 2 800 h every year, is comparable for this point of the best european sites tested in J. O. S. O. operation. The first solar granulation plates obtained in september 1973 show some details reaching the theoretical resolution limit. This telescope is now used by the workers of the Nice University Astrophysical Laboratory, directed by F.
