We take the non-homogeneity of the traffic demands into account and define an optimal beam management problem for supplying more bandwidth to denser areas. We model the problem as a network flow problem and propose a feasible solution approach. Such networks are typically operated on broadcast wireless channels and are thus specifically vulnerable to attacks. Passive attacks, such as eaves-dropping, are simple to perform and emphasize the importance for security and support within ULE. In this paper a mandatory security extension for the ULE protocol is discussed that is designed with the aim of being conservative in bandwidth consumption and lightweight in the sense that it allows for implementation in low-cost, resource- scarce (mobile) receiver devices. However, mobile channel impairments request effective countermeasures to improve the C/N performance and counteract Doppler spread. The paper investigates the application of MPE-FEC (multi protocol encapsulation -forward error correction) to DVB-S2 standard chain for railway applications. In this scenario, trellis power arches may introduce deep fading events which cause bursts of data losses. An analytical model describing MPE-FEC decoder performance has been derived and validated through numerical simulation considering different train speed values, MOD-COD (modulation order and physical layer coding rate) configurations and number of rows in the MPE-FEC frame. We have considered both a DVB-RCS-based satellite network and a wireless system based on IEEE 802.11e. Both TCP-based and UDP-based traffic flows are considered. In the satellite network, a dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme is used that is managed by a network control center: differentiated QoS support is guaranteed by the use of separate queues at the Gateway for distinct traffic classes. An ns-2-based simulator has been implemented to study the hybrid scenario. The paper is focused on codes based on sparse graph belonging to the category of the so-called generalized low-density parity-check (G-LDPC) codes. Some design insights are provided for multi-edge type G-LDPC codes based on protographs. In the satellite domain there is an emerging research interest in extending mobile broadcasting system architectures that include complementary ground components, in providing bi-directional data services to mobile users. In such 'evolved S-UMTS' architecture, compatibility with current (CDMA based) and future (OFDMA/SC-FDMA) based) T-UMTS physical layer techniques is of high relevance, if satellite networks are to assume a complementary role to terrestrial ones. In this paper, we first give an overview of SC-FDMA and then compare, via simulations, the performance of the technique with that of the WCDMA-based high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) that has been defined in release 6 of T-UMTS. The performance evaluations are performed over channels that are representative of the evolved S-UMTS architectures. Emphasis in the study is also given to realistic channel estimation and taking into account the effects of the amplifier's non-linearity. In many scenarios, satellites are the only available option for content distribution. On the other hand, video-on-demand (VoD) has been a topic of intense research in the past. The main problem of VoD systems is that their bandwidth requirements do not scale well with user requests. For this reason, VoD is only feasible under some constraints. In general, NVoD systems are an approximation of VoD ones. In them, downloads do not necessarily start when the request arrives, but some time later. Currently, the working party is involved in, developing IP-based satellite network performance, transmission control protocol (TCP) over satellite, air interface, error performance objectives, digital performance and disaster recovery applications of satellites. To reflect the state-of-the-art technologies meeting the emerging user applications we describe the satellite network performance activities related to next generation systems. This proposed modification can be useful for the resource limited mobile terminals in LEO satellite networks. In the proposed modification, a SCTP sender adaptively enables or disables multistreaming based on the comparison between the estimate of available bandwidth and current congestion window size. By doing this, user terminals use multistreaming feature appropriately and can avoid waste of resource caused by unnecessary use of multistreaming. The main drawback of these techniques is to weaken the transmission against bit error or packet losses. Indeed, a corrupted or missing header can lead to a non-decompression of consecutive packets and then to a disconnection until the reception of a non-compressed packet. The parameters of the header compression system should then be carefully determined. In this paper, we first review the main header compression protocols standardized for a unidirectional link. This analysis allows us to build a simple generic header compression model depending on few parameters characterizing a header compression protocol.
