As a problem of deflectional-torsional vibrations coupled by nonlinear terms, the dynamic response of a beam with a thin rectangular cross section subjected to harmonic excitation in the lateral direction is taken up. The possibility of a multi-mode response between deflectional and torsional modes is discussed theoretically. For this, first a general analysis is given. Then, a typical case is taken up in which the natural frequency of the second deflectional mode coincides with that of the first torsional one, and a numerical calculation is conducted near the primary resonance point. It is shown that, in addition to the usual harmonic oscillation, two types of oscillations accompanying torsional modes are possible, whose amplitudes decrease in one type and increase in the other, as the excitation frequency increases. In this way the occurrence of the multi-mode response is ascertained. An experimental analysis is also conducted, which confirms the validity of the theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":286527,"journal":{"name":"JSME international journal : bulletin of the JSME","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128446206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiments were performed by utilizing the same simplified test apparatus employed in the previous report, besides expanding the flow band width of the cross-flow which was exerted on the circular cylinders from the extremely narrow width to the uniform flow width. As a result, it was found that the critical flow velocity for both the vortex shedding vibration and the fluid elastic vibration was almost constant, independent of the flow band width, when evaluated by the equivalent velocity which was calculated by applying the continuity condition and the momentum flux theory for the cross-flow jetted from a narrow gap.","PeriodicalId":286527,"journal":{"name":"JSME international journal : bulletin of the JSME","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129242714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this experiment is to recover energy by incorporating this Cross-Flow Turbine into a pipe line (for example, waste water, sewage plant effluent), that is, \"reutilization of energy\". This turbine has the features that the axes of both entrance and exit pipes and the center of turbine are on the same straight line, and it has considerably simple structure without moving parts. The effusion side casing form is determined by the length of cutwater and the effusion side open angle. Consequently we obtained a maximum efficiency of 78.4%. Improvement is expected by use of the experimental data for the flow condition of a turbine exit.","PeriodicalId":286527,"journal":{"name":"JSME international journal : bulletin of the JSME","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114280215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The material properties used in this prediction were the growth behavior of long cracks and the fatigue limit of smooth specimens. The predicted results for notched specimens showed that the growth rate of short fatigue cracks first decreased with crack length, and then increased when the applied stress range was high or kept decreasing to zero when the range was low. Good agreement was obtained between the predicted results and the experimental results of a low-carbon steel. In the case of smooth specimens, the predicted results showed that the crack growth rate increased continuously with crack length. The difference in the growth behavior between notched specimens and smooth specimens was attributed to the difference in the increasing rate of the maximum stress intensity factor, Kmax, with crack length ; for a crack at a notch root, the increasing rate of Kmax may be smaller than the increasing rate of crack opening stress intensity facto, Kop.","PeriodicalId":286527,"journal":{"name":"JSME international journal : bulletin of the JSME","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115832804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
