With the challenge posed by industrial waste to the environment and human health, the concept is explored as a panacea to Industrial Waste challenges in Harare with the purpose of moving from the traditional linear economy to a Circular Economy (CE) toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 12 of sustainable production, consumption patterns. Questionnaires that yielded a 70% response rate facilitated the exploration by identifying types of industries, waste generated, and industrial waste management challenges faced. This was carried out to assist in identifying opportunities for synergies in IS implementation. Industry experts on CE and Central and Local Government experts were also interviewed from a regulatory point of view. A review of the current industrial waste management system revealed challenges of mounting solid waste attributed to negative economic policies and political, technical, and operational limitations. The Local Authority is characterized by a weak technical and administrative capacity to implement sound waste management mechanisms and a mismatch between planning and waste management policy implementation that create gaps between waste policies and decision-making. The research further revealed that ineffective industrial waste management has detrimental effects on environmental sustainability. Therefore, implementing IS diverts waste from the landfill contributing towards a CE. Furthermore, recommendations on how IS can be implemented towards a CE were made.","PeriodicalId":286146,"journal":{"name":"2023 14th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127272053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the ways by which the machinability of titanium alloy can be addressed is via the development of special cutting tool. Hence, this paper presents an experimental study for the investigation of cutting during milling of Ti6Al4V with SiAlON ceramic cutting inserts. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling machine was used to execute the practical experiments by making use of a dynamometer to measure the cutting forces and an infrared video camera for measuring the temperature generated during the machining of titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy. Cutting parameters, which include cutting speed, feed/tooth, feed rate and depth of cut, were evaluated from the cutting inserts employed and the results were obtained with the help of the Kistler Software. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was adopted for the feasible combination of the process parameters for the physical experimentations and the results obtained for the experimental responses namely; cutting force, temperature, surface roughness and vibration were evaluated. The results indicate the feasibility of the SiAlON ceramic cutting inserts for machining titanium alloy. Furthermore, the statistical analysis of the responses results produced four mathematical models for predicting the magnitude of the experimental responses. This study presents empirical results and mathematical models that can assist machinists in achieving effective machinability of titanium alloy.","PeriodicalId":286146,"journal":{"name":"2023 14th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121043432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In compressor designing, speed should be carefully examined because it has a big impact on efficiency of the machine and overall performance. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of speed on two stage air compressors. In this investigation, the experiment was conducted, at 603, 1002, and 1617 (rpm) on the two-stage reciprocating compressor. The results revealed that the lowest speed had the highest isothermal efficiency of 86.7%, with the middle speed having 82.93% and the highest speed having 79.88%. This showed that at high speed the machine started experiencing same negative effects that ends up reducing efficiency.","PeriodicalId":286146,"journal":{"name":"2023 14th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131881724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The capacity to monitor and regulate the additive manufacturing (AM) process in real-time for in-process measurements determines the quality of the finished products. The manufacturing sector has not yet experienced a significant amount of AM’s effects. This is because there are a number of technological obstacles to be solved first, such as a lack of process comprehension and in-situ process monitoring and control, particularly in metal AM systems. Since they can have a significant impact on the printed microstructure and the functionality of subsequent products, AM processing parameters can be challenging to fine-tune. Building a process-structure-property-performance (PSPP) relationship for AM using conventional numerical and analytical models is a challenging task. Using acoustic emission (AE), it may be possible to identify and correct major flaws in additively manufactured parts before they cause further damage. This could reduce material waste, improve quality, and reduce the need for repair or rework.","PeriodicalId":286146,"journal":{"name":"2023 14th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131333696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"An Autonomous Multirotor UAV for Security Systems in Rural South Africa","authors":"Jacques C. Welgemoed, R. Phillips, T. V. The security of these areas is vital as they contribute greatly to the nation’s food security and tourism industry. The need for an effective security system in these areas is evident when examining the crime statistics regarding livestock theft and poaching. This paper proposes the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Robot Operating System (ROS), and the PX4 flight stack for automated alarm response, mission execution, and precise landings. We show that the automation is effective by simulating an alarm scenario and demonstrating the automation’s use in subsequent landing tests. The landing precision was quantified by the mean position error measured from the centre of a landing target and was found as 0.193m with a standard deviation of 0.064m. The small standard deviation indicates that the landing precision was highly repeatable. This showed a considerable improvement over GPS-based landings, which yielded an average deviation of 0.910m with a standard deviation of 0.424m. The standard deviation here clearly indicated that traditional GPS-based landings were unsuitable for this application. The use of analogue video transmission and telemetry radios allowed the proposed solution to function in areas without any existing network infrastructure. Our results show that a low-cost UAV system can be created to address the concerns related to alarm response times in rural South Africa.","PeriodicalId":286146,"journal":{"name":"2023 14th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126075524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its hardenability makes it difficult to machine. This study considers the turning operation of AISI D3 under the soluble oil cooling condition. Three process parameters were considered in the following range: depth of cut (0.2-0.6 mm), feed rate (0.1-0.2 mm/rev) and cutting speed (200-300 m/min). The response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to obtain the feasible combination of the process parameters while the surface roughness was taken as the response of the designed experiment. A centre lathe (CTX 310 eco DMG) was employed for the turning operation while a PVD cubic boron nitride (CBN)-titanium nitride (TiN) coated insert manufactured by the SANDVIK Coromant was employed as the cutting tool. The heat-treated tool steel has a specification of $(phi 75 times 250 {mathrm {mm}}$ with hardness 58 ± 1HRC). The results obtained indicated that the combination of the process parameters that produced the least surface roughness $(0.235 mu {mathrm {m}})$ are feed rate (0.15 m /rev), cutting speed (165 m/min) and depth of cut (0.40 mm). There was also a significant agreement between the surface roughness values obtained via physical experimentations and the ones obtained from the predictive model equation generated by the RSM. This study presents empirical results that could assist machinist determine the feasible range of process parameters for the turning operation of AISI D3. The findings could also assists in machining AISI D3 to the desired degree of surface finish.","PeriodicalId":286146,"journal":{"name":"2023 14th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130172003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
