The 800 nm-thick YBCO film synthesized on MgO substrate showed line-shaped damage by scanning a processing laser beam on the surface. The damaged YBCO film was prepared to be coated with a Mo thin film 100 nm in thickness before measurement. The thermal effusivity YBCO film with no damaged part was measured and determined to be 1890 J s m K, on the basis of the calibration result of reference materials, Corning7740 and glassy carbon. The scatter of the measurement is estimated to be lower than 1.4%. A line-shape contrast image of thermal effusivity due to damaging the YBCO film was clearly observed. The thermal effusivity of the damaged part in the YBCO film was estimated to be 1.7% lower than that of non-damaged film. It was confirmed that a thermal microscope is applicable for homogeneity evaluation or defect inspection with about 1% resolution in the distribution measurement of thermal effusivity.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128084390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The superconducting direct detectors measure or count the arrival of energy quanta such as photons from sub-mm to the γ-ray region and phonons created by molecule incidence. There are three types: calorimeter, junction, and nanostrip detectors. The specifications of concern are spectral resolution, time response, and operating temperature. According to the requirement, the best type of superconducting direct detector is used for scientific and industrial applications such as, for example, dark matter search, X-ray materials analysis, mass spectrometry, and quantum communications.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125462622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The HTS coil for the magnet consists of 12 single-pancake coils wound with four parallel Ag-sheathed Bi2223 wires. The HTS coil is connected with a persistent current switch (PCS) made of YBCO films and cooled below 20 K by a two-stage GM pulse-tube cryocooler. Detachable current leads are used to reduce heat leakage to the 1st stage of the cryocooler. The initial target for the current decay rate of the magnet was 10 %/day. In order to achieve the target, wires with n-value of more than 14 in a range of 10-9-10-6 V/cm at 77 K, 0 T were selected and coil winding processes were improved. As the result, a current decay rate of 0.44 %/day was obtained under persistent current operation of the HTS magnet. To observe the mechanical capability of the magnet, mechanical vibration tests up to ±15 G and electromagnetic vibration tests were carried out.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132354108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two different types of Stirling coolers—one with a piston and displacer, and the other with two-pistons—are described by a simplified isothermal model using Schmidt equations. Examples of calculation results are given to explain the optimum phase difference between the piston movement and the pressure wave of the working gas. The regenerator, as one of the critical components of cryocoolers, is analyzed in detail. Numerical investigations have been conducted to study the regenerator efficiency in terms of the geometry, materials selection, pressure ratio, and the phase between mass flow and pressure in the regenerator. Improvement in regenerator performance is discussed as related to minimization of the enthalpy flow within the regenerator.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134407029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In laboratory-scale (2 kg) fabrication of the Nb3Sn superconducting wire with a Cu-NbTi reinforcer (Cu-NbTi/Nb3Sn), its critical current density is the same as conventional Nb3Sn wire without any reinforcer, but 0.2% proof stress is two times higher than the conventional one. The influence of the copper fraction on the strength of Cu-NbTi/Nb3Sn wires was also investigated. The strength of the wires is proportionally inverse to the copper fraction of the wire, and there are no significant effects on critical current density caused by the difference in copper fraction. According to these laboratory-scale developments, an industrial-scale Cu-NbTi/Nb3Sn wire was successfully fabricated up to a length of 13 km. The critical current density and 0.2% proof stress at room temperature of the industrial-scale wire was 604 A/mm2 at 12 T and 350 MPa, respectively. These values are the same as the laboratory-scale case. The high-strength Nb3Sn wires are going to be applied for the cryocooler-cooled hybrid magnets at Tohoku University and other high-field magnets.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131728081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To obtain high-quality MgB2 films even at low temperatures, the idea of epitaxial growth is essential, and a metallic buffer with a hexagonal crystal structure of the same lattice parameter as that of MgB2 was previously proved to be effective for this purpose. Here, we have examined a double-layered metallic buffer Ti/Ag for growing MgB2 with good crystallinity. We then clarified that this buffer, each layer being 50 nm-thick and fabricated at an ambient temperature, is useful for polyimide film substrates. Preliminary results on the deformation properties of MgB2/polyimide films are also described.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131840464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We tested in situ monocore MgB2/iron, ex situ monocore MgB2/stainless steel, and ex situ 14-filament MgB2/nickel tapes. Ic was measured for each sample as a function of lengthwise external strain in magnetic fields (B) at 4.2, 15, 20, and 25K using a U-shaped rig made of stainless steel. Even though the fabrication process and conductor configuration (number of filaments, width, and thickness) are different, the Ic-strain relations were essentially the same in all MgB2 samples. By increasing the strain, large and irreversible degradation occurred after linear and reversible Ic-strain relation up to the maximum of Ic (Icm). The slope of linear Ic-strain relation in the reversible regime, d(Ic/Icm)/d(strain), depends on both temperature and magnetic field. We discuss the relations between d(Ic/Icm)/d(strain) and magnetic fields normalized by the irreversibility field (Birr.) We also examined the strain effect of ex situ PIT monocore in Nb3Sn/stainless steel tape. The Ic-strain relation obtained is a parabolic one that has been reported so far for many kinds of multifilamentary Nb3Sn conductors. This indicates that the linear strain dependence of Ic in MgB2 conductors is an essential feature of MgB2.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128925441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The buffer layers were grown using an excimer laser. Crystallinity of the buffer layers grown on MgO substrates and the YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films on the buffer layers were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray rocking curves and X-ray φ-scan methods. One of key points to obtain YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films of the highest quality on the MgO substrates is the usage of BaZrO3 buffer layers that are lattice matched to the MgO substrates. However, every buffer layer examined here showed the result of high-quality YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films with a Tc of around 89 K and low surface resistance.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132822456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We maintained the background pressure to less than 1.3×10-7 Pa and the substrate temperature at 247-284°C. The Mg evaporation rate was 2 nm/s and B 0.5 nm/s. The best critical temperature (Tc) for the as-grown films was 34 K and the critical-current density (Jc) was 7.1×106 A/cm2 (4.2 K, self field.). In order to improve the crystallinity of the as-grown MgB2 thin films, we annealed them at 580-620°C for 1 hr under vacuum conditions. The Tc's of the post-annealed films increased about 4 K; however, Jc in the magnetic field decreased proportionate to the as-grown MgB2 thin film. From X-ray diffraction measurements, it was shown that the post-annealing process improved the crystallinity of the post-annealed film. Hydrogen energy is considered to present a potential effective option for minimizing the release of greenhouse gases. The Japanese Government promoted the WE-NET (World Energy Network) Project (Phase I: 1993-1998, Phase II: 1999-2002), which envisions: (1) construction of a global energy network for the effective supply, transport, storage and utilization of renewable energies and (2) promotion of hydrogen energy entry into the market in the near and /or mid- future, even before the construction of a WE-NET system. In this paper, the results of the Phase I research and development are summarized and the Phase II program is described, placing an emphasis on the research and development of small-scale and distributed hydrogen utilization technologies such as fuel-cell vehicle related technologies.","PeriodicalId":285677,"journal":{"name":"Teion Kogaku (journal of The Cryogenic Society of Japan)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114448233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
