However, the information representing a context evolves with the capability of the technology embedded in pervasive devices. As a consequence, access control systems should be able to support and understand any new context information in order to address access control requirements. In this article, we present an extensible XACML (eXtensible Access Control Markup Language) authorization decision engine to provide such flexibility. In attribute based access control like XACML, extending the policy authorization engine means extending its ability to understand new attributes data types including the functions that are used in the policy to evaluate the users' requests. We show there are two kinds of data types to consider in the context of access control system: data types of which both the values and the order relations are initially known, and data types of which neither the value nor the relation order are initially known. Based on this analysis, we present an extensible architecture for implementing XACML decision authorization engine composed of a core component that can be enhanced by additional data type modules. This architecture has been implemented in Java and includes an API for writing new data type modules.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127508050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are countless animation movies available now throughout the Internet. In order to allow animation movies to be queried, we present in this paper an Object XML model by converting animation movies into XML format, followed by storing XML data in a native object-oriented database. We then apply Structural Join Index Hierarchy (SJIH) indexing technique to enhance retrieval of such XML objects. A detailed cost model for query execution through SJIH is developed. Our experimental studies on accessing Flash movies using SJIH has demonstrated performance advantageous when compared with other indexing techniques.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127744011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight non-science major college students participated in this study. The students' eyes were more fixated on the text than on the illustration area when viewing the web pages. The text explanations seemed to provide greater detail than the pictorial information in presenting the content knowledge. Using successive web pages with less information seemed to promote more eye fixations on the illustration area. It was possibly because this reduced students' cognitive workload in information processing. Eye-tracking technology was helpful in exploring students' cognitive processes in multimedia learning. Discussions and suggestions for instructional designers and for future studies are provided in this paper.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127760049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, feedback score mechanisms are too easily manipulated creating falsely overrated reputations. Therefore, developing an effective fraud detection method can assist the user in identifying cases of fraud. However, none of existing research addresses the most important issue of early fraud detection, which is, discovering a fraudster before he defrauds. For effective early fraud detection for online auctions, this paper proposes a novel phased detection framework to identify a potential fraudster as early as possible. To heighten precision in detection, different quantifiable behavioral features were extracted and integrated with regression model trees to build phased fraud behavior models. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, real transaction data were collected from Taiwan's Yahoo!Kimo for training and testing. The experimental results with these models show that the recall rate of fraud detection is over 82%.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116497452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, the curriculum map is composed of curriculums and links, in which each curriculum is treated as a node (like cities on a roadmap), and the links among the nodes are generated by “competence keywords mapping.” The competence keywords are segmented by the efforts of “competence description in Chinese.” These efforts are achieved from the competence requirements of curricula, jobs, certifications, and education purposes. In addition, via the proposed curriculum information system (CIS), the competence mapping results can be visualized as a map to guide a learner who is undergoing learning navigation among the recommended curricula.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126471632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of hot topics in ubiquitous computing is context-aware services, which provide the services at proper time and proper place, in a proper way personalized to a user. However, there may be conflicts of services among users whose contexts are overlapped. Moreover, a context-aware service convenient for a user may cause another user's unpleasantness even troublesome. In this paper, we consider the relations between contexts of different users. A mechanism consisting of multi-agents, to find and reduce the unpleasantness of users due to context-aware services is constructed based on game-theory.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128047083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the CRB/QBE approach is easy to use from the end-user's perspective, it is not always possible for a user to prepare/have a suitable “example” in hand; besides, the lack of semantics inherent to this approach may cause strange things to happen (e.g., funny results). In this paper, we argue that multimedia retrieval should be knowledge-based and semantics-driven, preferably with personalization support. Through a case study on a distributed multimedia recipe database (DMRD) system, we show that User-community Profiling + Domain Knowledge + CBR (including keywords/QBE) is an effective way to go forward. Experiments on a prototype of DMRD system demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of such a hybrid approach we are advocating.","PeriodicalId":284323,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Conferences on Pervasive Computing (JCPC)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132746373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
