This study examined the effects of dry density and relative humidity (RH) on microstructure and mass transport characteristics of Granulated Bentonite Mixtures (GBM). The tested GBM samples were prepared by sieving and grading Japanese bentonite (trade name: OK Bentonite, Kunimine Industries, Japan). For dry density-controlled conditions, air-dried GBM samples (RH 60%, water content of 6.38% by weight) were packed at six different dry densities ranging from 1.25 to 1.75 g/cm. The samples for humidity-controlled conditions were prepared at the dry density of 1.45 g/cm and stored at RH 90% (0 to 12 weeks). A microfocus X-ray computerized tomography (MFXCT) scanning apparatus was used to visualize the microstructures of packed tested samples. For each tested sample, the mass transport parameters of gas diffusivity (Dp/Do), air permeability (ka), thermal conductivity (λ), and volumetric heat capacity (C) were measured. The results indicated that dry density greatly affected the CT brightness values of GBM; the histogram of CT brightness well captured the internal distribution of density and the CT brightness homogenized more with increasing in dry density. The measured Dp/Do and ka. were mainly controlled by the dry density. On the other hand, the thermal properties such as λ and C were governed both dry density and RH.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131565546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the ISF, modification agent such as water-absorbing polymer is used to improve handling of the removed soil during the separation process before storage. The expansion characteristic of the water-absorbing polymer agent might change the hydraulic property of the soil which will affect the leaching behavior. In addition, degradation of organic matter contained in the removed soil might influence the leachate quality as well. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the environmental safety of the modified removed soil for safe storage in the ISF and its potential reuse in the future. In this study, two lysimeter tests on modified and unmodified removed soil was conducted to investigate its leachate quality. These tests lasted more than 400 days (liquid/solid ratios greater than 3.5). The highest 137 Cs concentration in leachate from the unmodified soil was 6.6 Bq/L at 250 days, and the accumulated leaching ratio was 0.09%. In leachate from the modified soil (addition of 3% water-absorbing polymer agent powder), the highest 137 Cs concentration was 3.3 Bq/L and the leaching ratio was 0.046%, a reduction by half. Leaching of 134 Cs from both soils was extremely low. The soil modification resulted in accumulated leaching of total organic carbon that was 60 % higher and leaching of K + and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) that was 35 % lower, respectively. No expansion of soil volume was observed after modification.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120926728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rational ground reinforcement is necessary to minimize the ground damage caused by frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes. It is important to actively reuse the construction waste material for reducing the economic cost of civil works. In this study, one of the useful tools for constructing and maintaining a recycling-oriented society is considered. First, a concept of the total system to perform both ground reinforcement and electric power generation using the recycled asphalt pavement material and newly prepared T-shaped unit is proposed. The T-shaped unit that is referred as a PG unit in this study mounts the electric circuit with Peltier device. A series of the field monitoring for electric power generation and the laboratory test for the mechanical properties of protected ground are conducted for discussing the feasibility of the proposed total system. The results of the field monitoring show that the newly prepared PG unit can generate the electric power by using the temperature on the ground surface. In the laboratory test, it is also confirmed that the bearing capacity of the ground can be improved by using recycled asphalt pavement material and PG unit waste. The both results of field monitoring and laboratory test imply that the proposed total system can be realized.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"50 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134426373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to investigate the effect of salinity and surfactant on mass transfer characteristics of oxygen MNBs, a series of laboratory experiments conducted on oxygen MNBs water with different salinities and surfactant concentrations. The test results showed that two ranges obtained for oxygen MNBs size and the main parts were 0.026-0.172 μm and 1.635-6.540 μm. With the salinity of 0 g/L, the peak value of dissolved oxygen (DO) in oxygen MNBs water was 44.13 mg/L and the saturation time of DO was 11400 min. But when the salinity was 3 g/L, the peak value of DO increased by 7.68% and the saturation time of DO was extended by 9.32%. When the salinity was between 0 g/L and 2 g/L, the mass transfer efficiency of oxygen MNBs was adversely affected by salinity. In addition, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) reduced the peak value of DO and extended the saturation time of DO by changing the interface potential of oxygen MNBs.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133751567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strong alkaline cementitious material formed from the corroded lining concrete by groundwater will penetrate into bentonite buffer, meanwhile, the temperature of the barrier will rise under the radiant heat from the decay of the radionuclide. The laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the diffusion of KOH solution into bentonite under elevated temperature conditions and investigate the changes in mineral composition and microstructure of GMZ bentonite by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results confirmed that alkaline dissolution of montmorillonite minerals in GMZ bentonite is increased with both pH value of the alkaline solution and the temperature. For example, montmorillonite content decreased from initial 44.4% to 25.9% in severe situation. The degree of alkaline corrosion of bentonite is inversely proportional to the distance between the contact interface of bentonite and alkaline solution and visible macro fissures were observed by naked eyes at the interface. Within 2mm of the surface, the wing-like gels produced by montmorillonite hydration were dissolved apparently; and beyond 4mm, the bentonite retained its original microstructure. The results reveal the adverse effects of alkaline corrosion of GMZ bentonite on the long-term performance of buffer barriers should be paid great attention.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133577873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the experimental research conducted to date has provided evidence of the clay membrane behaviour, the extent of which is typically quantified through the reflection coefficient,  , when the permeant (electrolyte) solution contains a monovalent or divalent salt. Under such conditions, the osmotic counter-flow of solution is controlled to a great extent by the solute exclusion, which is also referred to as the chemico-osmotic effect. However, theoretical simulations of coupled solute transport and solvent flow suggest that, when two or more cations with different diffusivities are contained in the permeant solution, the electro-osmotic effect, which stems from the condition of null electric current density, can be comparable to or even greater than the chemico-osmotic effect. The relative importance of the aforementioned contributions to multi-electrolyte systems is examined herein through the interpretation of laboratory test results from the literature pertaining to a bentonite-amended clay soil permeated with aqueous mixtures of potassium chloride (KCl) and hydrochloric acid","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130284601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The site of this study is located in Ganzhou of Jiangxi province in China. 102 soil samples were collected along the Yangmeijiang River. ICP-MS was used to obtain heavy metal concentrations in the soils. Significant contamination was found in the agriculture soils adjacent to the river and near mining industries. The heavy metal concentrations were high at depths of 20 cm and 40 cm. According to geo-accumulation index I geo , the soils were extremely polluted with Cd ( I geo = 4–7), heavily polluted with As ( I geo = 2–4), moderately to heavily polluted with Pb, Zn and Cu ( I geo = 0–4) and virtually unpolluted with Ni, Cr and Hg ( I geo = -3–1). These results may be a result of large amounts of As, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn being produced by nearby copper heap leach facilities. Based on USEPA method for health risk assessment, with ingestion being the major pathway for health risks, heavy metals pose a non-carcinogenic risk to adults ( HQ max = 2.87, CR max = 4.25 × 10 - 4 ), but pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk to children ( HQ max = 20, CR max = 1.15×10 -3 ). Overall, As, Pb and Cr pose the primary health risks for the soils in the study area.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129632331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The regulatory test was in according to the Japanese Leaching Test No. 46. The modified batch leaching tests were carried out using de-aired distilled water and eliminating headspace to simulate anaerobic conditions. The results show that dissolved oxygen (DO) in normal batch leaching tests is ~6.0 mg/L. DO can be reduced to ~2.0 mg/L by using deaired water and eliminating the headspace and shaking step. The results suggest that a pseudo anaerobic condition can be achieved by eliminating the headspace and shaking step and conducting the tests in the vacuum deaerator since the DO was very low (~1.1 mg/L). Under the pseudo anaerobic conditions, the arsenic leaching concentrations are lowest (~0.001 mg/L), implying that arsenic leaching might be suppressed under anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, these arsenic concentrations are below the regulatory standard (As < 0.01 mg/L), suggesting that the shale rock grains are environmentally safe for utilisation in geotechnical applications.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130720614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the paper was to present some examples of reclamation works aimed at reducing the impact of an old municipal solid waste landfill on the soil-water environment and ensuring geotechnical safety. The article discusses several technical solutions applied in shaping the landfill body and strengthening the stability of the slopes. Moreover, some methods of reducing the spread of pollutants within the landfill site were presented. The article presents an example of a landfill located in difficult hydrogeological conditions, which for many years of operation did not have any systems applied for the purpose of protection from contamination. Based on the results of monitoring and numerical modeling, a beneficial effects of reclamation works on the improvement of groundwater quality and conditions of landfill slope stability were demonstrated. It was also shown that the application of a vertical barrier and a leachate drainage system have a positive effect on the improvement of the condition of plant communities in the landfill surroundings. It was concluded that reclamation works do not essentially change the function of the landfill but reduce its negative impact on the environment, in particular by limiting the spread of pollutants into the soil-water environment, protecting the slopes from erosion, reducing dust, increasing evapotranspiration and improving landscape value.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"05 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127243120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To enhance the effectiveness of Pb immobilization by the hydroxyapatite, it is important to understand that how Pb reacts with the hydroxyapatite and forms insoluble Pb phases in the soil pore. This study conducted the up-flow-unsaturated column percolation test with the combined application of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to understand the relation between the amount of Pb migrated and Pb transformed into pyromorphite in the water-unsaturated soil with regarding to the distance of Pb migration. The XRD analysis could quantify the amounts of Pb as pyromorphite formed during the water percolation test. Pb existed as water-soluble gradually migrated from the soil in the layer to the soil in the next layer with the water percolation despite the presence of hydroxyapatite. In opposite, the formation of pyromorphite was favor in the soil near the inflow side.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114410439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
