Furthermore, the effect of the difference between fibrous wood chips (FWC) and CF on mechanical properties is to be examined. In this study, a series of consolidated drained triaxial compression tests were conducted on a material mixed with steelmaking slag and FWC assuming under sieve residue or CF. The chemical fiber length and curing periods were changed in this study. As a result, it was found that 2% by volume of the CF mixture increased both the shear strength and the residual strength compared to the slag. However, their increases were up to the fiber length of 20 mm. When 5% by volume of FWC, the length of which was about 18.9 mm, were mixed to the slag, there were no increases observed in both the shear strength and the residual strength.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130769164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Historically, 6 million cubic meters of river sediment is dredged from the Savannah River each year; however, the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) (Georgia, USA), which is proposed to accommodate post Panamax ships in the channel, will result in further increased dredge volume for disposal. Because dredge materials are currently disposed on land, this study was focused on identifying possible beneficial uses of dredge material in order to reduce the requirements for land disposal. A laboratory-based study was performed to assess the feasibility of large volume geotechnical use options for dredged sediments. Four samples were collected from the disposal facilities and characterized using physical, chemical and morphological analysis techniques, including grain size distribution, Atterberg limits test, specific gravity, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser diffraction particle size analysis (PSA), total organic carbon content (TOC), loss on ignition (LOI), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis. The compactibility of the dredge was quantified using the standard Proctor test. Overall, characterization and compaction results demonstrated that the dredge material is viable for use as a nonstructural fill material, indicating that additional research and feasibility studies focused on specific beneficial use options is warranted. These results have important implications on the potential for beneficial use of the dredged sediment.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131756690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to their direct hazards, wildfires can also contribute to human and environmental health concerns due to secondary contamination, e.g., wildfire suppression such as aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) can release perand polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into the soil, which are very mobile, toxic, and persistent. Both direct seepage through the topsoil and biotransformation of fluorotelomers (FTs) determine the fate of PFAS in soils and aquifers. Research has indicated that phase partitioning behavior, such as sorption to soils and sediments, controls the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment According to various studies, the main soil or sediment characteristics that control PFAS’ sorption behavior include organic carbon (OC), pH, index cations, and ionic strength. However, neither OC, pH, nor claycontent alone could explain the sorption behavior of PFAS. More research is needed to help to understand the role of co-contaminants on the sorption behavior of PFAS, the role of surface charge on the sorption of PFAS, and on a wider range of PFAS chain compounds in the future. This paper aims to review the fate and transport of PFAS and identify the areas of research need.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124034198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, eco-friendly soil improvement techniques using biomineralization by microorganisms have attracted attention in recent years. This technique improves the mechanical properties of soil by precipitating calcium carbonate between soil particles and adhering the particles. In the current study, the author investigated an effectiveness of using waste paper fiber to suppress liquefaction and a self-healing process based biomineralization by microorganisms. As a result of solidification tests based on column approach, it was revealed that many calcium carbonate minerals are generated on the surface of waste paper fibers and between sand particles, and uniaxial strength is improved.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129241299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, the use of granular mixtures composed of zero valent iron (ZVI) and lapillus for the treatment of nickel contaminated groundwater is proposed. Through short and long term column experiments, the effects of the following were analysed: i) ZVI percentage per unit volume, ii) reactive medium thickness, iii) flow velocity and iv) initial nickel concentration, on the breakthrough point occurrence (point where a rapid increase in nickel concentration in the effluent is observed). The optimal mixture composition (i.e. the optimal ZVI content per unit volume) was defined when the reactive medium was able to keep its reactivity and hydraulic conductivity for the time necessary for remediation. This capacity, as shown in this study, depends on the propagation velocity of the contamination front through the reactive medium.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116821623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The simulator was validated by replicating the measurements of the evolving permeability and the solute concentrations in a single rock fracture obtained from flow-through experiments under different pH conditions. Then, the changes in fracture permeability during the virtual long-term flow-through tests were predicted by assuming the permeant under various pH, stress, and temperature conditions. The predicted results show that the rate of permeability reduction under a pH of 11 was about 10 times faster than that under a pH of 7.0, and the impact of the pH condition was confirmed.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"414 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116136437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a discrete fracture network model is developed to understand the process of contaminant transport in a fractured rock mass. This model integrates a stochastic fracture generating algorithm for sedimentary rocks and a two-dimensional numerical model that simulates the flow and transport of a contaminant through the heterogeneous system of fractures. Further, the uncertainty in geological and transport properties of the contaminant are considered as random variables. The probability of concentration exceeding the permissible value at the endpoint is quantified by carrying out reliability analysis using the subset simulation method. The probabilistic framework developed in this study helps assess the behaviour of contaminant migrating through a complex heterogeneous system and provides a basis for gaining a level of confidence in the model results.","PeriodicalId":283909,"journal":{"name":"Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126156895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
