In retrospective research we found an association between the risk to develop ASD and the month of birth with a peak in July pointing at a possible decreased exposure to sunlight during the first two semesters of pregnancy. This could point to an important role of vitamin D which has important anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities and thereby regulates the proper functioning of the immune system in these individuals. Maternal serum levels of vitamin D double during the first trimester of pregnancy and therefore decreased exposure to sunlight resulting in diminished levels of vitamin D production can be an important risk factor for the development of ASD. However, there is a need for more integrated multidisciplinary studies in families where all siblings are also studied to elucidate the contribution of their genetic risk factors.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120973124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In that case, one should not only have a good understanding of ASD, but should also have sufficient expertise of the alternative diagnoses. To promote knowledge about ASD in the professional field, the Autism Expertise Center has started a series of whitepapers. In order to bring together the relevant expertise, we collaborate with other institutions. The white papers explain, per diagnostic criterion, the difference between ASD and another diagnosis, but also what can be observed when these diagnoses appear together. We hereby aim to provide diagnosticians with more knowledge and tools and thus improve the diagnostic process. Following publications in 2018 by historians Herwig Czech and Edith Sheffer, it was claimed in the international scientific literature and in Dutch newspapers that (1) Hans Asperger cooperated with the Nazis and (2) that his theory of autism was based on Nazi ideology. In this article, I will add more nuance to these claims by separating them more clearly. The first claim can very well be researched by social historians. In the first part of the article, I summarize the main points of their most recent contributions. My focus is on the second claim, which requires additional research by conceptual historians. Here, I offer my own contribution, analysing the conceptual structure of Asperger’s work, its development and its main influences. I will show that his theory of autism was not based on Nazi ideology, even though he worked within the context of Nazi psychiatry.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125279221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, can we know what autism is in a truly objective sense? Is it moreover justified to put forward persistently the medical-clinical perspective as an explanation? To answer these questions, we first look at the interdisciplinary field of Disability Studies, paying special attention to the concept of neurodiversity. Drawing on that field and its insights, we do not only unravel the multiple meanings of autism, but we also make an argument for an urgent understanding of autism as an ambiguous and political phenomenon. This understanding implies thinking autism in contextual and relational concepts and recognizing the mutability of the phenomenon. Furthermore, by drawing on concrete examples, we demonstrate why an ambiguous and political understanding of autism is urgent, both in individual trajectories as in thinking about early autism detection and intervention. Finally, we conclude our article by arguing for an attitude of epistemic humility. We also offer some suggestions on how to implement ambiguity and political understanding of autism in a clinical and research context.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127954279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In een recente meta-analyse door Chan en collega’s (2020) is het effect van sportinterventies onderzocht op het sociaal en communicatief functioneren van kinderen met autisme. Sport zou enerzijds het sociaal-communicatieve gedrag van kinderen kunnen stimuleren door de contactmomenten met de trainer en andere kinderen. Anderzijds zou persoonlijke ontwikkeling en succes op sportief vlak kunnen bijdragen aan meer zelfvertrouwen in een sociale context.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122663097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During these four years, the University of Amsterdam and the dr. Leo Kannerhuis (specialized center for people with autism) have collaborated in several studies to examine the relationship between psychophysiological measures, specifically heart rate variability and skin conductance, and autism symptoms in adults with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The main question was whether individual differences in inhibition and sensory sensitivity in adults with ASD could be explained by the way the autonomic nervous system functions and reacts. More knowledge on which factors might contribute to the large individual differences seen in ASD, could in time lead to more specialized and personally adjusted treatments. Besides these studies on inhibition and sensory sensitivity, we have also validated an autism-specific sensory sensitivities questionnaire, which is available for the clinical practice.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123999073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De hoofdvraag is: welke typerende elementen in BT kunnen worden geïdentificeerd waarvan verondersteld wordt dat ze bijdragen aan positieve behandelresultaten bij kinderen met ASS, en welke resultaten kunnen worden bereikt wanneer een BT-programma, gebaseerd op deze elementen, wordt toegepast in de praktijk?","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122587872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
