The present research was planned to evaluate the efficiency of manpower in the management of different categories of cattle in the dairy unit of the livestock complex, BASU (Patna). The investigations were done for 120 days. During the study, it was found that the work-efficiency of manpower during the morning time is better than the evening time. The average time spent in activities such as milking operations, feeding, watering, calf management, and miscellaneous activities were studied. The average time spent on milking, feeding, and watering activities for milch buffaloes took the most time compared to other categories of animals. The average time spent in the actual milking of cows and buffaloes were 324.52±13.90 and 329.77±8.52 seconds respectively. The average milk yield per day of cows and buffaloes were 2.98±0.18 and 4.31±0.09 kg, respectively. The time taken in rectal palpation and artificial insemination per animal was noted to be 1.37±0.04 and 7.50±0.16 minutes respectively. The training of workers may help to overcome the scarcity of manpower in adverse conditions.","PeriodicalId":283578,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134130876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the 6 cases were between the age group of 1.5 to 3 years. On palpation of the swelling revealed the presence of soft reducible mass through a 4 to 5 finger dilatated hernial ring. These cases were confirmed as umbilical hernia due to either congenital or acquired reasons. Under sedation with xylazine at the dose rate of 0.1 mg/kg, hernioplasty using polypropylene mesh was performed in all the cases. The recovery was complete in all the heifers with minimal complications. It is concluded that hernioplasty using polypropylene mesh has been effective in managing large umbilical hernias in adult bovine without any complications.","PeriodicalId":283578,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114246563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This fact has led farmers to increasingly use fodder trees such as Balanites aegyptiaca . The present study was conducted to better understand the Balanites aegyptiaca fodder nutritive value in the hot dry season at Saria experimental station evaluating the nutritional activity of its dried leaves complementing a basic ration of crushed sorghum straw. Twelve local breed sheep of “Mossi breed” divided into three homogeneous batches in weight of four animals of which two batches were complemented (50 g and 100 g of leaves of B. aegyptiaca ) and a control batch were included in experimentation for feeding test during 35 days. Analysis of the chemical composition of the dried leaves of B. aegyptiaca reveals that they are rich in crude protein (12.64% DM) and minerals (14.89% DM) with an average crude cellulose content (13.70% DM). During the experiment, the feed intake rate of dried leaves of B. aegyptiaca was very high (> 99%), and their consumption had a positive influence on the consumption of sorghum straw. The animals in the supplemented lots achieved higher straw intake rates than the control lot. Also, the batch of animals fed 50 g of B. aegyptiaca leaves per day gave the best average daily weight gain (20.7±12.4 g) compared to the batch fed 100 g (14.9±15.5 g). The control batch had a weight loss of 20.7±7.5 g. Regarding these results, we noticed that a rational use of B. aegyptiaca leaves in the diet of small ruminants in rural areas allows a better valorization of cereal straw in the hot dry season to induce an improvement of their zootechnical performances.","PeriodicalId":283578,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry","volume":"351 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134084948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fistulated animals are required to collect the rumen liquor. Maintaining fistulated animals raises ethical issues. Moreover, in field condition it is difficult to collect rumen liquor from Pulikulam cattle using rumen pump, owing to its ferocious nature. Hence, this study planned to compare Pulikulam cattle rumen liquor vs Pulikulam cattle faeces as a source of inocula for studying in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics of forages consumed by Pulikulam cattle in its breeding tract. The rumen liquor and faecal samples were obtained from three Pulikulam cattle reared in Pulikulam Cattle Research Station, Tamil Nadu, India. Rumen liquor was collected via rumen pump and fresh fecal samples were collected per rectum. Predominant forages present in the three districts, of Pulikulam cattle breeding tract were collected and their in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics for 24 and 48 hours were studied using either rumen liquor or faecal liquor as inocula. In all the three districts, no significant variation was observed in in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics of the predominant forages when either rumen liquor or faecal liquor from Pulikulam cattle were used as source of inocula. Hence, it was concluded that as an alternate strategy faecal liquor could be used as inoculam for in vitro rumen fermentation studies in Pulikulam cattle.","PeriodicalId":283578,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135345030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Johne’s disease (JD) is a chronic progressive granulomatous enteritis of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). A study was conducted from 2019- 2021 for prevalence of bovine tuberculosis and Johne's disease in cattle and buffaloes from organized dairy farms of south Gujarat region, India by ELISA technique. Total 719 bovine serum samples comprising 461 cattle, 41 bull and 217 buffaloes for bovine tuberculosis, while 637 serum samples comprising 380 cattle, 40 bull and 217 buffaloes were screened for prevalence of Johne's disease. Overall prevalence of bovine tuberculosis and Johne’s disease recorded was 6.25% (45 of 719 animals) and 8.63% (55 of 637 animals), (p>0.05) respectively. Animal wise higher prevalence was noted in cow compared to buffaloes for bovine tuberculosis and Johne’s disease. Among cattle higher prevalence was recorded in female animals than male animals for TB and JD. ELISA is considered as rapid, simple and sensitive technique that could is used for screening and detection of the infected cases of TB and JD in bovines.","PeriodicalId":283578,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry","volume":"71 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135344048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
