Copper nickel alloys (70Cu/30Ni and Monel 404) are integral materials in VED design, chosen during the original development of microwave tube technology to satisfy a complex combination of material property requirements. Historically, the availability of these materials in requisite quality has been cyclic and unreliable. In 2002, a project was launched to establish a long-term, reliable and affordable supply of high-quality copper-nickel alloys to support the continued manufacture of microwave power tubes. The technical approach utilizes a novel casting process to produce material of requisite quality at a lower cost than the incumbent vacuum casting process. An extensive economic analysis was also performed, quantifying the trade-offs between material cost, inspection costs, product yield and economic order quantities. This presentation summarizes the results of this project.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. In microsecond pulse length operation at 13 kV and 110 mA, power levels in the order of 1 W have been observed at the TE/sub 2,6/ mode at 456.2 GHz and the TE/sub 0,6/ mode at 458.6 GHz. Modes at the fundamental, including the TE/sub 0,3/ at 238 GHz and the TE/sub 2,3/ at 233 GHz, have output powers up to 70 W. The TE/sub 5,2/ mode was observed to tune continuously in frequency from 246 GHz to 248 GHz. The gyrotron is being processed for CW operation. At present, more than 12 W have been obtained in CW operation in the TE/sub 2,3/ mode at 233 GHz.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. A program to develop a 100 kW power level, continuous wave (cw), 95 GHz gyrotron oscillator for use in a U.S. military system is currently underway at CPI. To date, three W-band gyrotron oscillators have been constructed and demonstrated. The third of the three gyrotrons developed for the program, which showed significant performance improvements over the first two, demonstrated 115 kW total output power for 43 kV cathode-to-collector voltage, 50 kV total accelerating voltage, and 4.8 A beam current for an efficiency of 56%. Pulses up to 18 minutes in duration, significantly beyond the required 6 minute pulse required by the program, were demonstrated at the 115 kW operating point.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. Problem classes specifically targeted include depressed collectors, gridded-guns, multi-beam guns and sheet-beam guns. The focus of the development program is to combine modern finite-element techniques with improved physics models. The code employs a conformal mesh, including both structured and unstructured mesh architectures for meshing flexibility, along with a new method for accurate, efficient particle tracking. New particle emission models for thermionic beam representation are included that support primary emission, and secondary emission is handled with an advanced model. This presentation focuses on two significant advances to MICHELLE over the past year; hybrid structured/unstructured mesh support, and a time-domain electrostatic algorithm.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. In this paper, the authors present theoretical results obtained from GANGA (Ghosh's analysis with non-uniform GamaA for helix TWTs), to predict and control the potential backward-mode oscillation in a TWT for a wide range of structure parameters. It has been found that with the increase in structure inhomogeneity, the backward phase velocity and backward impedance increases with frequency but forward (fundamental) phase velocity and impedance (fundamental) decreases. Also the other structure parameters, namely, position of the metal envelope, helix pitch angle, helix tape thickness, etc, control the backward wave propagation. However, the effect of structure inhomogeneity is more pronounced.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. This paper describes the development and performance of a C-band helix traveling wave tube. A new high efficiency collector was developed that employs elaborate electrode processing to reduce the secondary electron emission ratio, advanced asymmetrical electrode geometry, transverse magnetic flux threading and a short refocusing section. Fewer secondary electrons are generated and more electrons stay in the collector, reducing helix or body current. Limiting input drive so the power output stays within the linear operating range of the TWT and avoids the near saturation region reduces both the spread and the mean of the velocity distribution in the electron beam. Capturing this beam with the new high efficiency collector mentioned above has enabled higher levels of collector depression than have been previously obtainable. The result is a TWT that is more efficient, is easier to cool and has lower annual operating energy costs.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. In most fast wave and slow wave vacuum electron devices dispenser cathodes, which are made of porous tungsten impregnated with barium calcium aluminate, are used as the electron source. A very necessary process called activation must occur that results in barium uniformly covering the surface and remaining there for a sufficient time to provide a lowered work function. The key to this is the formation of a dipole of barium over oxygen over the metal substrate from which the electrons are pulled. A fully activated surface must have every available site occupied by the barium-oxygen dipole. This not only provides the lowest work function but also assures a constant and uniform source of electrons during the life of the device. The chemical reactions that take place and the processes required to remove the unwanted species from the surface are described.","PeriodicalId":283559,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The characterization of the individual TWTAs and power combining demonstration were carried out over a 500 MHz bandwidth from 29.1 to 29.6 GHz to simulate the deep space network (DSN) bandwidth of 31.8 to 32.3 GHz. The input and output powers were corrected for circuit insertion losses due to the waveguide components.
