The PLA was preformed using a 248 nm KrF excimer laser. Multiple pulses, with durations of 25 ns, at an energy density of 250 mJ/cm were accumulated onto the sample. The FE properties of the samples were studied in a high vacuum chamber, with a base pressure better than 5x10-4 Pa. The current-electric field (I-F) characteristics were measured using a \"sphere-to-plane\" electrode configuration, with a 5 mm diameter stainless-steel ball anode. The applied electric field was obtained by dividing the applied voltage by the gap distance and the threshold field (Fth) and is defined as the field strength when an emission current of 1 nA is achieved. The microstructure and the surface morphology of these samples are determined by the cross-section transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements, respectively.","PeriodicalId":281199,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE 20th International Vacuum Nanoelectronics Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134236910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The morphology and microstructure were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The observation showed that the length of CNTs is about 2 m, the average space between adjacent CNTs is about 300 nm and the diameter of CNT is about 45 nm. The less dense \"short and stubby\" aligned CNTs films should have good electron field emission characteristics. The CNTs synthesized on carbon fibers substrate has many predominances for the fabrication of cold cathode devices. The potential advantages of this concept include: (1) preserving the advantages of field emission such as room temperature operation and direct current modulation at the cathode, (2) reducing arc vulnerability by eliminating the need for a large voltage difference between the emitter tip and a nearby (gate) electrode, (3) scale-up potential to large area cathodes, (4) opportunity for significantly enhancing the emission current by phonon-assisted tunneling, and (5) opportunity for ultra-low noise operation, enabling a new class of ultra-low noise TWT amplifiers.
