At the same time, social identity theory has been applied to the study of work place bullying as a potential means to understand and reduce the experience of it. In this study, participants (N=65) took part in an online questionnaire where experiences of bullying, social identity, and job satisfaction were measured. Analyses indicated that social identity fully mediates the association between bullying and job satisfaction, such that experience of workplace bullying leads to a reduction in social identification, and a resultant increase in job satisfaction. The implications of these findings for a social identity account of workplace bullying, and the ways in which these findings might inform workplace anti-bullying interventions are discussed.","PeriodicalId":278221,"journal":{"name":"Social Psychological Review","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134313145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the U.K. the debate on euthanasia and assisted suicide has become more prominent with some disabled, elderly and physically ill people making trips to the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland to end their lives. Baroness Warnock stated that frail elderly people should think about euthanasia so as not to financially burden their families (Templeton, 2004). This could suggest that to be dependent and in need of care is to be a burden. Those requiring help often say ‘I don’t want to be a burden’ and when receiving help some experience themselves as a burden (Angus & Reeve, 2006; Charmaz, 1991; Chochinov et al., 2007). This is of interest as most people will require help at some point in their lives and so potentially could feel this way. Groups such as the elderly, the disabled and the physically or mentally ill who may need help in order to survive could be especially vulnerable to experiencing this sense of being a burden to others. This review will ask what psychology has to say about feeling like a burden. It will examine the research available and explore the psychological and social consequences for individuals who feel this way. Psychology has been criticised in the past for individualising distress and for not exploring wider political and societal reasons for psychological problems (Hare-Mustin & Marecek, 1997); therefore, the review will also consider how a sense of burden is socially constructed and suggest ways of addressing the problem alongside areas for future study.","PeriodicalId":278221,"journal":{"name":"Social Psychological Review","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120954710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its specific focus is within what has been called the ‘social learning paradigm’ (Addis & Cohane, 2005, p.637). The social learning paradigm is consistent with a social constructionist approach in that it views human behaviour as not arising from innate essentialist traits, but instead as being influenced and constructed by the interaction between the environment and the individual’s own cognitions and behaviour (Bandura & Walters, 1963). However, the review notes that there is disagreement and debate surrounding the social learning paradigm’s relationship to the social constructionist view of masculinity and so also details the social constructionist view in order to highlight this. It gives an outline of some of the theoretical views and the pertaining measures that have been designed to research masculinity and the male gender role, and also focuses on the psychological distress that has been theorised to arise as a result of the norms associated with that role.","PeriodicalId":278221,"journal":{"name":"Social Psychological Review","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114901406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human fatherhood: A multi-disciplinary perspective 人类父亲:多学科视角

{"title":"Human fatherhood: A multi-disciplinary perspective","authors":"Anna Jane Machin","doi":"10.53841/bpsspr.2010.12.2.2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.53841/bpsspr.2010.12.2.2","url":null,"abstract":"The term fatherhood is overlain with a complex set of cultural, psychological and historical meanings. Nevertheless, for the majority of history it has implied little more than a role as bread winner and, as such, was afforded little academic focus as compared to that of the mother. However, the increasing numbers of gay men who take up fatherhood and absent fathers who actively pursue contact with their children combined with the general acceptance amongst new fathers of the ‘new fatherhood model’ make it clear that men are both motivated to create and maintain unique bonds with their children in the absence of a relationship with the mother and to adopt, where society allows, an identity centred upon compassion for and active involvement with their children (Finn & Henwood, 2009). Despite this, while the quantity of research into fatherhood has increased in recent years much of it focuses upon the psychological and behavioural impact of absent fathers upon child development within Westernised societies rather than asking a series of key ethological and neurobiological questions aimed at understanding the behavioural, emotional and motivational aspects of this behaviour from the father’s perspective. This paper aims to rectify this imbalance by reviewing the nature of fatherhood from a multi-disciplinary perspective incorporating psychology, anthropology, ethnography and neurobiology. Further, it aims to identify why an understanding of the father’s role is important both from the perspective of academia and society and to suggest future research programmes with the aim of identifying the complex, varying and unique role that fathers play across societies.","PeriodicalId":278221,"journal":{"name":"Social Psychological Review","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128908580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is of no surprise then that depression is considered by some as ‘the common cold of mental health’ (Harvard Mental Health Letter, 2006, p.1). Rowe (2003) argues that depression is an experience that more or less everyone has felt at times. Terms such as ‘being down in the dumps’, ‘having a low mood’, ‘being fed up’, ‘feeling down’ or simply, as ‘having the blues’ are commonplace. In this review, views on the nature and definition of depression, gender differences in depression, and the unique nature of male depression are critically discussed.","PeriodicalId":278221,"journal":{"name":"Social Psychological Review","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125695349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
