Semi-structured interviews were used as the primary guides to extract information concerning EFL teachers' self-directed professional development (PD) activities associated with the maintenance and enhancement of oral language proficiency. The participant of this study was an EFL teacher who experienced oral language attrition and has motivation to maintain her oral language proficiency. Data were analyzed descriptively to result in EFL teacher perceptions of self-directed PD activities that demonstrates a positive attitude towards improving and maintaining her oral language skills as an integral aspect of her professionalism. The result indicated that self-directed professional development activities had a significant impact on the participants' recognition of the importance of maintaining oral language skills. These activities also emphasized the need to continuously improve and enhance their oral language proficiency, highlighting the benefits it brings to both teaching and learning. One specific example mentioned was the participant's engagement in self-directed PD activities using Netflix series, which proved to be highly beneficial for improving linguistic features. These efforts contribute to her long-life growth as a language teacher, enabling her to provide effective language instruction and create an engaging learning environment for her students. The study highlights the importance of self-directed professional development in supporting EFL teachers' language maintenance and the positive impact it has on their professionalism.","PeriodicalId":278118,"journal":{"name":"Loquen: English Studies Journal","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123345760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, vocational school students often struggle with their English-speaking abilities. To address this issue, a pragmatic approach to English language teaching is proposed. Pragmatics focuses on effective communication by considering cultural contexts and is believed to enhance speaking skills. The study utilizes a case study approach in two vocational schools, collecting data from students and teachers through questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal differences in perceptions between teachers and students, highlighting the students' lack of understanding of teaching activities. The pragmatic approach is seen as a solution to improve students' speaking skills by incorporating language theories into real-life contexts. The study suggests the importance of teacher preparation, comprehensible instruction, and alignment of perceptions between teachers and students for effective teaching of speaking skills. The implementation of the pragmatic approach can be achieved by integrating comprehension of language structures and content, setting specific targets, and utilizing appropriate teaching materials.","PeriodicalId":278118,"journal":{"name":"Loquen: English Studies Journal","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122904905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a basic interpretive study which involved three English teachers and students from three classes of the eighth grade (thirty-six students for each) in a state-Islamic junior high school. The data collection method covered observation sheets, video recordings, a questionnaire and interview. The results showed explicit correction and recasting as the highest appearance frequency of OCF practice because the teachers felt that both types are the most effective and simplest way to provide feedback. They have the same perception that providing OCF can make the students’ speaking become better, but it still needs to consider their feelings. Even though, students’ perceptions showed different and makes them pay less attention because they see it as something usual. However, they feel fine to accept it as long as it uses an ‘easy-understood’ type of OCF and not mad or shy when they receive it at all. Then, it showed that the relationship of OCF, teachers’ and students’ perception is aligned for the OCF practice and the feelings but missed in the perception of teachers’ purpose of giving OCF and how students take it for their next speaking.  All in all, considering how OCF is implemented, which is viewed from both teachers and students, can influence how well the OCF may work for achieving better English speaking.","PeriodicalId":278118,"journal":{"name":"Loquen: English Studies Journal","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127928129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present article aims at discussing the utilization of English songs as one of the learning sources for learning listening skills for EFL learners from the perspective of the Audio-Lingual Method (ALM). A qualitative descriptive research design was applied to scrutinize how English songs benefit for EFL learners to facilitate their listening subject. The data were obtained from previous related research findings and documentation studies. Furthermore, it discusses the relationship between song and listening, song as media to facilitate listening skills, the reasons for why using the songs as the learning media, the implication of using the songs to improve listening skills, and the benefits of using English song as a learning media. Review literature shows that the utilization of English songs may improve students’ listening skills and pronunciation over time. The ALM may assist learners in systematically learning the language by playing audio files. Students can comprehend brief and easy sentences when music is played in the background. English songs may assist learners in improving their listening skills and can be used for a variety of learning objectives. From the perspective of the ALM, English songs allow students to better understand the language being taught because it needs a high level of concentration as purposed by the ALM teaching and learning characteristics. In conclusion, from the perspective of ALM, English songs may bring positive contribution to the development of EFL students’ listening skills for some reasons.","PeriodicalId":278118,"journal":{"name":"Loquen: English Studies Journal","volume":" 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132041524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
