A pulsed Nd:YAG laser was used for Lamb wave excitation. Detection of out-of-plane and in-plane surface motions was accomplished using a CW Ar:ion laser and appropriate heterodyne interferometric systems. Two propagation modes, a fast mode and a slow mode, were observed with substantially different velocities, amplitudes, and frequency contents. They were found to correspond to the fundamental dilatational (S/sub 0/) and bending (A/sub 0/) modes for Lamb waves, respectively. Velocity measurements gathered along paper machine direction and cross-machine direction for the S/sub 0/ mode were shown to be in very good agreement with velocities obtained using a pair of contact bimorph transducers. Results are presented for various commercial paper grades ranging from fine papers to paperboards. The study also investigated the correlation between image features and visual classification of the plaque appearance as revealed by ultrasound scanning. The study found a few texture features to be significantly correlated to the histological findings within the training set (p=0.002-0.04). However, the correlation found may not be reliable for clinical determination of plaque composition. The correlation between image texture features and the visual classification of the B-mode images was, not surprisingly, found to be much better. Thus, computer analysis is likely to be useful in future investigations as many problems with intra- and inter-observer variations that inherently exist in the subjective visual classification can be eliminated.","PeriodicalId":278111,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Depending on the magnitude of the ultrasound wave the pulsation will be: (1) linear to the applied pressure, or (2) non-linear to the applied pressure. The latter can be split into stationary and transient scattering. For low amplitudes of the acoustic field the instantaneous radius of the bubbles is linearly related to the amplitude of the applied external pressure field. For higher amplitudes of the external field the pulsation of the bubbles becomes nonlinear with the amplitude of the external field. The spectrum of the scattered ultrasound wave contains also higher harmonics of the ground frequency. For even higher amplitudes of the acoustic field the noticed scatter properties of encapsulated bubbles in a contrast medium increase dramatically and become transient. The scattered frequency spectrum containing second and third harmonics broadens. The properties of the encapsulated bubbles change due to rupture, disappearance, change of gas content, etc. Conventional 2D imaging machinery limits the capability of ultrasound contrast agents. Stationary and transient non-linear scattering occurs at acoustic pressures currently employed. Absorption, acoustic velocity, resonance behaviour, frequency and pressure dependency are different from normal tissue. These waves were found to be composite bulk waves (CBWs), in general three-partial and comprising incident quasi-longitudinal and two reflected quasi-transverse bulk modes. A projection of the subspace, in which the CBW satisfies the stress-free boundary condition, was calculated for orientations of LiNbO/sub 3/, defined by the Euler angles (90/spl deg/, 90/spl deg/, /spl psi/). The angle /spl psi/=163.3/spl deg/, for which CBW satisfies both mechanical and electrical boundary conditions, agrees with known propagation direction for non-leaky wave, and the angular dependence of velocity for CBW is very close to that of leaky waves, when the surface is nonmetallized. Application of the same technique to quartz cuts (0/spl deg/,/spl theta/,/spl psi/) gave the lines of supersonic non-leaky waves. This method utilizes the radiation force to stimulate an acoustic emission by the object at low frequencies. The radiation force, which is highly localized, is produced employing two intersecting focused ultrasound beams driven by two CW sources at slightly different frequencies. The acoustic emission is generated at the difference, or the beat, frequency. This field is nondirective and is detected by a hydrophone. It is shown that the amplitude of the acoustic field is linearly proportional to the peak instantaneous ultrasound power. This has been verified experimentally using a pinhead object and two identical transducers in a water tank. The experimental data have been compared to theoretical predictions based on multiple scattering models. At volume fractions up to 50% a good agreement is found between experimental data of an oil-in-water emulsion and the theories. At volume fractions of dispersed phase above 50%, there are important discrepancies between the multiple scattering theories and the measurements on water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions. Among the most promising technologies are piezoelectric sensors. The piezoelectric sensors directly detect mechanical and electrical property changes caused by the analyte and are thus amenable to continuous monitoring of fluid streams. The current effort is directed towards the development of trace ion (e.g. mercury) and biochemical (e.g. DNA, antibodies, toxins) detection. Several candidate structures have been proposed and many have been shown to be feasible for fluid phase sensing with the best experimental piezoelectric sensor results published to date employing the shear horizontal acoustic plate mode (SHAPM) structure. This type of sensor has detected approximately 10 ng/ml of such analytes as mercury, human IgG and cholera toxin and employed Z-cut X-propagating (ZX) lithium niobate (LiNbO/sub 3/) SHAPM devices. The ZX LiNbO/sub 3/ wafers provide low propagation loss, high mass sensitivity, high electrical coupling and a single electrically-dominant acoustic mode. However, the principal drawback is the poor temperature stability of the material (/spl sim/-70 ppm//spl deg/C). In order to obtain better results the residual temperature instability of LiNbO/sub 3/ must be overcome. The current work analyzes potentially temperature stable plate modes in quartz crystals for dominant, temperature-stable electrically-efficient, mass-sensitive acoustic modes with low propagation loss under fluid loading.","PeriodicalId":278111,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Theoretical estimates for self- and mutual inductances of the bond wires are computed in the presence of two ground planes. An equivalent circuit for the duplexer including the parasitic elements is presented. The frequency response of the duplexer is predicted with the help of circuit simulation.
