The World Health Organization estimates that a teenage mother has a 50% chance of dying during childbirth. The purpose of this study is to analyse the epidemiological and clinical aspects and to carry out a diagnosis and prognosis of teenage births at the Mother and Child SOS Hospital. Method: The study was carried out over a five-year period extending from January 2018 to December 2021 covering descriptive and retrospective aspects of teenage girls aged from 10 to 19 years at the child and mother SOS hospital Results: The prevalence of pregnancies among the patients under review was 5.18%. The average age of the teens involved was 17 years with 67% aged between 18/19 years. 47% of the group was made up of school girls with a level of education not exceeding secondary school for 40% of them. 52% of the patients attended at least four prenatal examinations and 98% of the patients did not develop any pathology during their pregnancies. 90 % of them had natural births and the rest delivered their child through C-sections. 26% of the mothers endured acute fetal distress and 19% suffered from narrow pelvis. The main maternal complication was post-partum tear of the perineum among 26% of the mothers. 15% of the babies had very low birth weight. The Apgar score was below 7 for 4% of the newborns at the first and fifth minute. Three babies were still born and the rate of perinatal mortality was 1.09%. Conclusion: There is clear evidence of existing of risks relating to precocious pregnancies and child births among teens but they seem to occur as much as a result of unfavorable socioeconomic and sanitary determinants as from factors of biological immaturity. The prevention of these obstetrical risks point to the need to pay more attention to the pregnant teen through the provision of adequate and specifically targeted prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130235205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About 36% of women aged 15-49 are married before the age of 18, and 32% of rural adolescents (10-19 years) gave birth, compared with 19% of urban. In Mwanza region, one-third of currently married adolescents and women aged 15-49 experienced an unmet need for family planning and had low use of modern contraceptives. Here we present a study that explored the gaps in accessing and utilization of quality adolescent sexual and reproductive health services (ASRH). Methods: This was a descriptive and exploratory cross-sectional formative study utilizing multiple qualitative research methods. Purposive sampling was used to select an urban district (Nyamagana), a rural district (Magu) and an island (Ukerewe). Fifty-six In-depth Interview (IDI) and 30 focus group discussions (FGDs) stratified by gender (12 out-of-school, 12 in-school), and (3 male, 3 female adults) were purposefully sampled. An experienced moderator, along with a note-taker, led the discussions while taking notes. The FGDs were recorded using an MP3 voice recorder. A thematic analysis approach was undertaken and data were analysed using NVivo 12, a qualitative software. Results: Adolescent girls needed specific services such as counselling on menstrual health, sexual consent, HIV/ AIDS, and prevention of pregnancies. Sanitary pads during the menstrual period were a very important pressing need of adolescent girls. Adolescents both girls and boys preferred to receive friendly health care services in a respectful manner. Girls mentioned that they would like to receive SRH support from nurses in health facilities, mothers, sisters, aunties and friends. With regards to the boys, they preferred to receive the SRH from health care providers followed by their peer’s friends. Several obstacles were reported to hinder access to SRHS predominantly among adolescent girls as compared to boys. Poor infrastructure tended to impair the privacy at the health facilities, and rarely there were specific buildings to provide friendly adolescent sexual and reproductive health services. Conclusions: The strategies to guide the delivery of ASRH should involve the inclusion of duty bearers, promotion of friendly health care services where health workers provide services in friendly-manner, and provision of ASRH education for awareness creation to adolescents and supportive parents/ caretakers.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129307940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aims: The study is aimed to determine; (1) the prevalence of gestational trophoblastic tumours in Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi (2) The pattern of presentation and (3) the maternal outcome in patients with GTD managed at the Deparrtment of Obstetrics and Gynaecilogy of Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria. Methodology: This was a retrospective study of the cases of gestational trophoblastic disease managed at the Departmenrt of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Noth-Western, Nigeria between the 1st January, 2010 and 31st of December, 2019. Results: There were 82 cases of gestational trophoblastic diseases out of 5,088 gynaecological admissions during the study period, thereby constituting 1.6% of the total gynaecological admissions. There were 16,572 deliveries; hence the incidence of GTD was 4.9 per 1000 deliveries. The age range of the patients is between 15–45years, with a mean age of 26.84 years. Of the 82-case managed during the period under review, only 74 (90.2%) of patients’ case notes were retrieved for analysis. Hydatidiform mole was the commonest among them, accounted for 56.8% of cases and 6.9% of the cases were choriocarcinoma. In 50% of cases there was no documented histological diagnosis. GTD was commoner at the extremes of reproductive age. Conclusion: The incidence of GTD in this study was 4.9 per 1000 deliveries. Vaginal bleeding was the commonest presenting symptom. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of this disease is a good determinant of the disease outcomes, while late presentation was associated with high maternal mortality as found in this study","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"CE-23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126541738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latest 2018 FIGO Malaria remains a major public health issue and one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in many countries worldwide. Pregnant women are particularly concerned by this disease. To overcome this plague several African countries have adopted intermittent preventive treatment with Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (IPT-SP). Studies led in several countries have shown a strong adhesion to IPTp-SP, from 59% to 94.81%. This adhesion seems to have led to the emergence of Pfdhfr (P. falciparum dihydrofolate reductase) and Pfdhps (P. falciparum dihydropteroate synthase) markers involved in SP resistance at very high levels. The strong prevalence of triple mutant I51R59N108 on Pfdhfr and double mutants G437E540 and G437S581S on Pfdhps increase the risk of therapeutic failure after treatment with SP, as do a high prevalence of haplotype Pfdhfr IRNI and haplotypes Pfdhps SGEAA and the quintuple mutant IRNI-SGEAA. The efficacy of SP could be compromised in countries in which the prevalence of Pfdhfr K540E is higher than 95% and the prevalence of Pfdhps A581G is higher than 10%.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134088226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This health problem is on the ascendancy worldwide and in the country especially among the youth in our Senior High Schools. Since there is still no cure for the disease, the best way to control its high rate of infection and high incidence is by prevention. The method of prevention that can be employed will depend on the level of knowledge and awareness of the disease among all target groups. Victory over the prevention of this infection and its consequences largely can be associated to the knowledge, attitude and perception levels of the youth as well as their lifestyle behavior that can pose as risk to acquiring this infection. Aim: The objective of this research was to investigate variables such as knowledge, attitude and perception levels of students in the Tamale Metropolis, the case of Presbyterian senior high. Questionnaires were asked to relate to the variables being investigated, that knowledge, attitude and perception on hepatitis B virus. The questionnaire was administered to 300 students of the school in focus. Questions were also asked on issues of risk behavior related to this disease. Results: The study found that 94% of the respondents were aware that the infection was caused by a virus whiles the rest of the respondents thought the disease is caused by either by spiritual attack (2%) or swelling of the stomach (2%) infection and (2%) didn’t know the cause. About 51% of the respondents thought that the disease was transmitted mainly by unprotected sex and 73.3%. While only 35% reported having been vaccinated against HBV. Conclusion: Generally, knowledge of hepatitis B disease among the study group was not high enough and many had erroneous perceptions about the disease, therefore more education is needed to sensitize Senior High School students about the hepatitis B disease.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114697098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a condition with unknown pathology, leaving us with several theories. However, about half of women with endometriosis complain of difficulty conceiving. The exact mechanism remains unclear. In severe cases, infertility is associated with anatomical disturbances, but the pathophysiology of infertility in mild cases of endometriosis is not understood. From the balance of available evidence, medical treatment of endometriosis does not improve fertility and should not be given to patients wishing to conceive. However, surgical ablation or excision of minimal and mild endometriosis does improve fertility chances. Methods of assisted reproductive technology can be used in combination with hormonal treatment in women with mild endometriosis. Endometriosis treatment is yet to be considered effective. This article is a review of the literature on endometriosis-a disease affecting the quality of life in women all over the globe.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126716636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They wanted to undergo acupuncture to improve their health and increase their chances of conceiving. Four years prior, the wife was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and primary infertility. She wanted to regulate her menstrual cycle, to help release eggs regularly, to increase the rate of ovulation and the chance of pregnancy. The husband was diagnosed with oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT). He wanted to improve the quality of his sperm i.e. sperm count, motility and morphology. Results: Acupuncture was done once a week as the sole treatment for each member of the couple over the course of 4 months, which resulted in the female partner becoming pregnant naturally and giving birth to a healthy baby boy. Conclusions: This case suggests that acupuncture is an effective treatment for female patients with PCOS and for male patients with OAT.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114460665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Family planning service utilization has remained low despite efforts by development partners and the government. Hence, the need to examine the utilization of family planning services in order to understand regional preferences, trends, patterns, and utilization associated factors such as accessibility and availability of the services to the populace. Methodology Critical analysis regarding the utilization of family planning in Nigeria was used with source data from NDHS 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018 and DHIS2. The analysis focused on the utilization of family planning services and most utilized family planning options. Finding Contraceptive use among women of reproductive age is generally higher in the northern region than in the southern region. A five-year trend in the utilization of family planning services by women of reproductive age is showed a slightly declining trend in the utilization of family planning services by women of reproductive age in the country.Injectables and implants were married women’s most utilized family planning options. As reported by health facilities, utilization of family planning services in 2021 showed that condoms and implants were the most utilized family planning options. Conclusion The findings urge the need to intensify sensitization among the rural populace on the benefits of family planning, improve female literacy and empowerment, and make easily accessible family planning services and commodities.","PeriodicalId":278014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122415050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
