Since the introduction of the DMS-100 line of digital switching products, the demand for call processing capacity has steadily increased, justifying our selection of a highly evolvable technology base. Three factors account for this change: increasing requirements to support larger numbers of subscriber lines, in creasing feature penetrations, and increasing real-time requirements for complex features. A recent step in this evolution is the introduction of the DMS-SuperNode using high performance MC68OXX microprocessors. We are now incorporating the benefits of Reduced Instruction Set Computing or RISC technology which has the potential to satisfy future demand for call processing and telecommunication process capacity into the DMS computing core. Because of its highly regular architecture, a RISC processor can pipeline instructions very effectively and hence can operate at very high instruction issuing rates. RISC processors use cache, a high speed buffer inserted between the processor and the main memory, to increase the effective memory access speed. To effectively deploy RISC technology in telecommunications, a deep understanding of cache performance is needed. In developing RISC strategy, BKR scientists carried out an extensive cache analysis. Approximative models are derived, and a specific admission control algorithm based on one of the models is presented and the obtained transfer efficiency is derived. BFA will be realized via the deployment of fiber remote terminals in both single and multi-customer buildings having service requirements over 300 lines, in heavy business areas, industrial parks, university campuses and residential complexes. Resulting from the requirement of maximum integration of communicative and distribution services, a connection-oriented switching fabric permitting tree structured multipoint connections has been defined; connection establishment protocols as well as maintenance facilities are described. Gotz","doi":"10.1109/ISS.1990.765805","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISS.1990.765805","url":null,"abstract":"The Intelligent Network concept introduces new network elements, such as Service Control Points and Switch Adjuncts, and specifies additional flexibility for switching systems, allowing a greater variety of services to be offered by telecommunications service providers (telcos). Since conventional methods of subscriber and telco administration of these services are clearly not adequate, a new type of operations function, Service Man agemenent has been defined for Intelligent Network services to control and to administer subscriber-specific and service specific network information. Service-specific Service Manage ment Systems have been built and deployed in the U.S. to support the first generation of Intelligent Network services. This paper describes a new concept: an integrated set of Service Management functions which will give telcos the flexibility to support next generation Intelligent Network services and the abiliry to provide new degrees of subscriber and service provider access and control, while offering significant potential for cost reduction as compared to successive purchases of dedicated Service Management Systems for each service. Before the advent of the Intelligent Network, services were primarily implemented as features of switching systems and developed on a service-by-service basis. Control and management of these services were, and continue to be, performed by assorted operations systems which load, update, retrieve and audit switch-based parameters that configure, enable, disable, monitor and measure services. In addition, subscribers can exercise limited control through their telephone sets, over some of their services after they are enabled and configured, such as activation of Call Forwarding. Service Management affords new degrees of service access and control for service providers and subscribers by translating the conventional, physically-oriented network view into a service view for a specific service or for an individual subscriber. One way of implementing the described set of Service Management functions is via an integrated Service Management Operations System, generically referenced as SM-OS. Such a system is expected to be part of a new generation of operations systems based on a modular computing architecture and whose data are integrated into an overall Corporate Data Architecture and Logical Data Model. Its major feature is a fully decentralized control architecture based on a microprocessor network interconnected via triplicated signalling bus. Traditional SPC telephone equipment provides centralized, though sometimes distributed, control architecture based on a duplicated central processor. This paper introduces the TROPICO System and respective arquitecture, lighting its differences as compared to centralized systems and discussing the main advantages of its approach. The throughput of this switch is not decreased by internal contention. This is accomplished by using a rerouting algorithm which makes use of many embedded banyan networks and special routing information called remaining judgement times. This switch also has by-pass links for output lines and uses output buffers, which enhance switch performance by handling external contention among by-pass links and through the use of rerouting algorithms. A short-cut algorithm that improves throughput by employing the concept of the remaining judgement times is also presented.
