Atmospheric pollutants such as CO, SOx, and NOx show absorption bands in the 2-5 µm range and passing any of these between a light source and detector will show a change in the detector signal. Strain-balanced GaSb/GaxIn1−xSb quantum well structures are being investigated to cover the 2-3 µm region grown on relaxed GaxIn1_xSb buffer layers. These provide low-strain structures while engineering the bandgap to realise the wavelength of interest. This paper is concerned mainly with the detector structure rather than the design of the active region. Hence bulk GaSb is used as the active region in some of the devices designed to ascertain the efficiency and sensitivity enhancement achievable from resonant structures.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126463108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pumping Ti:Al2O3 by flashlamps is difficult, however, because of the Ti3+ short radiative lifetime (3.2 μs). Also, we develope an all solid-state power supply that can deliver a 5 kA peak current to the flashlamp on the same time scale. The supply provides a 150 to 300 mA direct simmer current and 10 A pseudo-simmer current (risetime of 100 μs) to allow for spatial centering of the arc in the flashlamp bore. At the top of the pseudo-simmer pulse, the main electrical pulse is provided by an original circuit based on magnetic compression. A maximum energy of 110 J can be delivered to the two flashlamps (55 J per lamp) within 4.5 μs with 75% electrical efficiency.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125332030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mode-locking is achieved by a periodic phase modulation, which results from cross-phase modulation induced by the pump–pulses in the active fibre. The pump source used in the experiments is a Nd:YAG laser generating 90 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 82 MHz. The fibre laser cavity length is matched to a multiple of the pump laser cavity length (9 times). The active fibre is an 8-m-long praseodymum-doped ZBLAN fibre with a dopant concentration of 1000 ppm, a core diameter of 4.8 pm, and a cutoff wavelength of~1µm. The absorption at 1064 nm is approximately 0.2 dB/m. The fibre laser typically reaches threshold for ~400 mW of coupled pump power. Despite the fact that the fibre laser is pumped in the extreme long-wavelength wing of the absorption band, a cw output power of 20 mW is obtained for a coupled pump power of ~1 W. Because of the strong (normal) group velocity dispersion at 1.3 pm in the praseodymium-doped fibre, the generated pulses are far from bandwidth limited, when no dispersion compensating elements are used in the cavity. However, the spectral width of these pulses is ~1.2 nm, which shows that pulse durations in the ps range can be obtained using dispersion compensation. Details of the cw and the modelocking characteristics of the fibre laser are presented. The method of modelocking by cross-phase modulation is compared with other mode-locking techniques such as loss modulation using an acousto-optic modulator.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114171098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The large surface enables efficient heat removal from the laser gas by heat conduction (diffusion) to the discharge walls. Diffusion cooled systems do not need gas blowers as currently used for convectively cooled lasers. However, a suitable annular resonator has to be designed meeting the requirements of high beam quality and laser efficiency.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114191660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Air pollutants are monitored by gas chromatograph techniques or, with better detection limits, by photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). The sensitivity of infrared (IR) photoacoustic (PA) detectors is limited not only by the magnitude of the background signal, but also depends on the gas constituents. The presence of CO2 gas in gas samples leads to the decrease of the amplitude of the detected PA signal, due to the effect of the kinetic cooling. For this purpose it is necessary to have an appropriate pump laser operating in Q-switched mode and active medium for SRS. The simplest and most reliable Q-switching of Nd-lasers at 1.3-µm wavelength can be realized by using crystalline saturable absorbers (SA). Nowadays only a limited number of dielectric crystals, which possess nonlinear saturable absorption in the desired region, are known. In this paper we report on a study of Q-switching mode of operation of 1.3-µm Nd-lasers with the Nd2+:SrF2 and V3+:YAG crystalline SA, and Raman shifting of this laser wavelength in Ba(NO3)2 crystal to eye-safe spectral region.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130992110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
