In recent years, an area scaling technique with the advantage of simplicity has been reported, which makes use of the slab waveguide large area RF discharge uniform excitation and an optical unstable resonator, and combines the diffusive cooling to make the compact kilowatt CO2 laser into reality. In this paper, we shall present a new technique, single RF discharge excited diffusively cooled 1 × 2 slab waveguide linear array CO2 laser, with which we have obtained over 1 kilowatt power output. In this type of laser structure, the electrode length is only 500 mm, and each array element has a cross section of 99 × 2 mm2. In experiments, the whole waveguide array is excited by a single RF input, and the RF frequency is 93 MHz. The gas mixture pressure is 70 torr with composition of CO2:N2:He:Xe = 1:1:3:5%. The output beam dimension of each array element is 2×16 mm2. In the far field, the two beam spots overlap and are combined into a single peak distribution. Experiments have shown that it is possible to use this technique to produce multikilowatt high beam quality power output from a compact-sized device.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123955914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, saturable solid-state materials, operating at the classical wavelength of neodymium lasers near λ0 = 1.06 μm, are of great interest. Here, we present DFWM in a tetravalent chromium-doped gadolinium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Cr4+:GSGG) crystal. Indeed, tetravalent chromium (Cr4+) doped crystals were recently shown to be effective solid-state saturable absorbers for neodymium lasers.1,2 Furthermore, in comparison with traditional saturable absorbers such as dyes in solution, polymeric films, and color-center materials, these crystals exhibit chemical stability, high optical damage threshold, compactness, and would enable operation at high repetition rates.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125491385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is to be contrasted with diode lasers (including quantum well lasers) where the lasing transition occurs between electron and hole states across the semiconductor bandgap. Such pure quantum confinement unipolar lasers were originally proposed 25 years ago, but despite considerable effort this is the first structure to achieve laser action.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131756008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices commonly employ a hybrid unstable resonator, or a plane mirror waveguide resonator containing a partially reflecting output coupler. Unstable resonators have the advantage of all-reflective mirrors and edge coupling, but are unable to provide sufficient frequency purity and beam quality for some applications, such as lidar and remote sensing. For large aperture devices using stable cavities, partially transmitting output mirrors, usually of ZnSe become expensive and are more readily damaged than full reflectors, whilst the large output beam provides difficulty with the subsequent beam handling. There is thus a need for a new resonator approach, which can deliver a small aperture beam from wide slab lasers, with good beam quality and spectral purity, using all-reflective optics.","PeriodicalId":276336,"journal":{"name":"1994 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129363578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
