The approach aims to an exploitation of the computing power of modern multicore machines. Terracotta was chosen because it transparently allows to cluster the JVM. The paper discusses design and implementation aspects of the approach, and demonstrates the achievable execution performance through the parallel simulation of a scalable multi-agent system based on the predator/prey model.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117136605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Multilevel Predictions for the Aggregation of Data in Global Sensor Networks","authors":"A. Benzing, B. Koldehofe, Marco Völz, K. Besides having hard constraints on latency bounds at which data needs to be processed, such simulation applications will impose high requirements with respect to available bandwidth. Predictors, originally introduced in the domain of wireless sensor networks for energy saving, are one appealing solution to provide real-time estimates and at the same time significantly reduce the data rates. While in the setting of wireless sensor networks many prediction models have been analyzed, their behavior and use is unclear when applied to distributed data streams where aggregation results are typically processed over multilevel hierarchies. In the context of weather simulations, we propose a distributed R-Tree-based aggregation algorithm that allows for efficient reuse of aggregate queries. In the setting of real temperature readings taken from weather stations during one month, we study the trade-off between updates of the prediction model and the precision of the predicted values. Our evaluations indicate that even in situations where complex prediction models are expected to perform best, simple prediction models give higher benefits with respect to saving bandwidth while providing similar data accuracy.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124414483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Live reconstruction of the human form, from cameras surrounding the subject, could bridge the gap between video conferencing and Immersive Collaborative Virtual Environments (ICVEs). Video conferencing faithfully reproduces what someone looks like whereas ICVE faithfully reproduces what they look at. While 3D video has been demonstrated in tele-immersion prototypes, the visual/temporal quality has been way below what has become acceptable in video conferencing. Managed synchronization of the acquisition stage is universally used today to ensure multiple images feeding the reconstruction algorithm were taken at the same time. However, this inevitably increases latency and jitter. We measure the temporal characteristics of the capture stage and the impact of inconsistency on the reconstruction algorithm this feeds. This gives us both input and output characteristics for synchronization. From this we determine whether frame synchronization of multiple camera video streams actually needs to be delivered for 3D reconstruction, and if not what level of temporal divergence is acceptable across the captured image frames.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126896197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A user may ask a question to the system as they naturally ask to a human while the system retrieves the search results by analyzing the given question and the current GPS location. Based on the retrieved results, the system carry out conversation with the user to explicitly understand his/her needs and accordingly filters search results for display. The conversation between the system and the user is based on word co-occurrence keyword extraction and Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) technique. As per initial experimentation, we found out that the proposed approach of conversation based shopping is appealing and useful to the user.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126999276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the large number of components to be simulated, the execution of those simulations requires a high level of resources such as CPU and memory. Thus, in order to increase the performance of those simulations, a feasible solution consists on splitting the complete model in sub-domains, where each sub-domain is executed in a single machine. In this paper we propose a strategy to automatically accomplish the parallelization of those environments, which has been implemented and tested in the SIMCAN simulation platform.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131269055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wainer","doi":"10.1109/DS-RT.2010.37","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DS-RT.2010.37","url":null,"abstract":"An approach to carrying out asynchronous distributed simulation of multiprocessor message passing architectures is presented. Aiming at achieving better performance on Conservative DEVS-based simulations, we introduce the GLM protocol which borrows the idea of safe processing intervals from the conservative time window algorithm and maintains global synchronization in a fashion similar to the distributed snapshot technique. Under the GLM scheme, a central look ahead manager (LM) exists which is in charge of receiving every LP’s look ahead, identifying the global minimum look ahead of the system, and broadcasting it via null messages to all LPs. The simulation is divided into cycles of two phases: Parallel phase and Broadcast phase. The GLM protocol is asynchronous and the central look ahead manager is not expected to be a bottleneck since the only message transmissions involving it take place when all LPs are blocked waiting for permission to advance their LVTs. The results presented in this paper show that the GLM protocol not only significantly reduces the total number of null messages, but it improves the performance and higher speedups are achieved.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134613824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Making walking, a sensory-motor action, seem natural to the VE user is a problem with many facets: locomotion interfaces should properly stimulate the senses, they should enable movement in any direction, e.g., walking backwards), and they should not impair the user's ability to build a mental model of the scene. Evaluating common locomotion techniques using path analysis and task performance has revealed their relative strengths and weaknesses. I will discuss three threads of recent research in locomotion: increasing the realism of eye position movement (and resulting optical flow), techniques that enable VE users in head-worn-display to really walk around scenes that are larger than the active area of their head tracker, and investigations of the effects of various locomotion interfaces on the cognitive aspects of locomotion.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115673993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Catering to the complex and dynamically varying needs of business applications/clients, these systems must usually be realized by dynamically composing a variety of network-available services. Evaluation of large-scale SOAs, particularly on dynamic network platforms, such as Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs), is a non-trivial problem that requires not only a correct modeling of SOAs and the network platform, but also their relationships. This paper describes a new tool – SOAMANET – to design and rapidly synthesize simulations for the experimental evaluation of SOAs on MANET platforms. With its modeling techniques and analysis capabilities, SOAMANET allows simulation-based and system execution-based analysis of dynamic SOA and/or MANET designs and implementations.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126734832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Self-Adaptive Dynamic Load Balancing for Large-Scale HLA-Based Simulations 大规模hla仿真的自适应动态负载平衡

{"title":"Self-Adaptive Dynamic Load Balancing for Large-Scale HLA-Based Simulations","authors":"R. E. Grande, A. Boukerche","doi":"10.1109/DS-RT.2010.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DS-RT.2010.11","url":null,"abstract":"Large-scale HLA-based simulations are susceptible to performance issues caused by load imbalances. High Level Architecture (HLA) was designed to organize distributed simulations, but it does not provide any mechanism to prevent imbalances. Also, several load balancing schemes have been proposed to properly re-arrange simulation load, but they do not present all the features needed for large-scale environments. A hierarchical, distributed balancing scheme has been designed to support the execution of such simulations, however, due to the balancing inter-relations, heterogeneity of resources, and cyclic load changes, the scheme reacts unnecessarily. Thus, a self-adaptive balancing scheme is proposed in order to dynamically re-configure the redistribution scheme and avoid the ones that are needless. Experimental results showed that the adaption technique improved the balancing efficiency since less migrations were required to achieve similar or better performance.","PeriodicalId":275623,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/ACM 14th International Symposium on Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115089738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
