This sector runs a considerable risk of causing environmental and occupational hazard. It also loses valuable materials by applying inappropriate recycling techniques. Formal recycling industries have to compete with informal businesses, whilst still complying with environmental and occupational regulations. Several obstacles prevent formal recycling businesses from becoming competitive, such as the fact that the formal sector finds it difficult to collect sufficient waste volumes due to international bans on waste imports, and high costs for collecting domestic obsolete equipment. In this paper, the costs of collection and transport for five products were analyzed within both formal and informal recycling industries. The payment to owners at the point of collection is the biggest financial burden recyclers have to carry. Formal businesses have no other choice but to buy obsolete equipment from households or industries. Within the national pilot project, which investigates the strategies to establish an e-waste management system in China, authorities should consider providing financial support for e-waste collection.","PeriodicalId":275164,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133069183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research is based on a comprehensive analysis of regular product design procedures to extract the design information that correlates with energy consumption, itemize and quantify the information, and eventually build up mathematical models for final optimization. The result of this research will be used as guidelines for regular product design and achieving energy- saving design result. The objectives of the research are in threefold: (1) establishing a mechanism that can explicitly demonstrate the product design information that includes energy consumption throughout all stages of product life cycle; (2) modeling energy parameters with quantitative mathematical expressions; (3) developing a decision making system to optimize product design in terms of energy-saving. A concept called Design Unit (DU) will be introduced as a new method to describe product design information related with energy consumption. The axiomatic design theory will be integrated with DU concept, and becomes an important standard for optimizing product design. An new concept called Energy Factor will be introduced briefly in this paper.","PeriodicalId":275164,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122313868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model, based on Bayes' Theorem can estimate the performance of any binary separation process. Given input material data and the probabilistic characteristics of the separation process, the model estimates the masses and concentrations of the output streams. Applications of this model to separation processes, including those used in material recycling, are demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":275164,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129324166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A radical change is needed to avoid that the original intent of the Directive is being lost. {"title":"Statistical Evaluation of Input-Side Metrics for Life Cycle Impact Assessment of Emerging Technologies","authors":"Yi Zhang, B. However, it is often difficult to apply, especially to emerging technologies due to the difficulty of finding accurate output-side emissions and impact data. Usually, input-side data are more readily available, even for emerging technologies, and may provide a reasonable proxy for predicting the environmental impact associated with emissions. In this paper, this relationship is explored by case studies and regression of life cycle impact with input-side quantities of cumulative mass, energy, and exergy. As a single quantity, this study indicates that ecological cumulative exergy consumption may be best at predicting environmental impact. This work also confirms that if the input variables are separated, then nonrenewable energy use dominates overall impact. However, nonrenewable minerals and some renewable resources are also highly correlated with impact, and nonrenewable energy is only good at prediction of impact due to emission of CO2, SO2, and NO2. These preliminary results suggest the promise of using input-side metrics to predict life cycle environmental impact, and identifies areas of future work.","PeriodicalId":275164,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129991800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
