Bilodeau, Sivasundaram","doi":"10.14359/2026","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/2026","url":null,"abstract":"Low-calcium fly ash, ASTM Class F, is being increasingly incorporated into portaldn cement concrete as a partial replacement for cement. The replacements commonly used are 15 to 25 percent by weight of cement. This paper presents data on several aspects of durability of this new type of concrete. The aspects discussed include freezing and thawing cycling, resistance to chloride ion diffusion, deicing salt scaling resistance, carbonation, and volume stability. Data on the role of high volumes of fly ash to control alkali-silica reaction in concrete are also presented. It is concluded that, in general, high-volume fly ash concrete has excellent durability characteristics. The only exception is the deicing salt scaling tests, in which the above concrete performs poorly.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131414822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight fly ashes were used as supplementary cementing materials. These mortars were cured at a temperature of 40 degrees Centigrade and a relative humidity more than 95 percent, and the expansion of these mortars was measured. The concentration of soluble alkali ion in fly ash immersed in the solution containing sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide was also determined. By studying effects of physical properties, chemical and amorphous silicon dioxide in fly ash, a method to evaluate the expansion of mortar containing fly ash was proposed based on amorphous silicon dioxide, the replacement ratio and particle diameter of fly ash.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"83 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133071499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pipelines are placed inside a submerged concrete tunnel which acts as an underwater protecting bridge over the rocky sea bed. The 590 m long tunnel was cast in five separte elements produced in two dry docks. The tunnel starts at a water depth of 30 m and ends up at water level. After seven years in service, cores were drilled from the splash zone element. The testing of the cores included compressive strength, capillary absorption, chloride profile, thin section analyses, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and element analysis. The results indicate that in such a low porous concrete, the reaction products between sea water and cement paste will fill up the original low porosity and tighten the concrete so that the ingress of chlorides will cease.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123478830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanism of steel corrosion in salt impregnated concrete is described, along with laboratory test data showing how ordinary concrete's corrosion prone characteristics are altered by the use of silica fume. The test members were subjected to environments simulating salt water and deicing agents, for 370 days. Test results show that silica fume admixture prevents salt induced corrosion of steel rebar and tensioning strands.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125248486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The steel corrosion of single reinforced concrete beam with different admixtures under repeated loading was also studied. It is possible to predict the crack patterns and mechanical behavior of concrete when steel corrosion is induced. The addition of inhibitors was able to reduce the corrosion rate. If concrete undergoes repeated loadings, the resulting crack will allow harmful elements in todal zone to penetrate into the concrete. This will accelerate the corrosion rate, especially at high loading conditions.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133281524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
