{"title":"Fatigue Strength Toughness Indices of Fiber Reinforced Concrete","authors":"G. Batson","doi":"10.14359/2919","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/2919","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents test data on the flexural fatigue strength and toughness indices of concrete reinforced with three types of metallic and one type of synthetic fuber in volume percentages ranging from 0.1 to 2.0. The beams reinforced with metallic fibers exhibited greater fatigue strength than beams reinforced with synthetic fibers. The fatigue strength increased with fiber volume percentage for each type of fiber. The fatigue strength of the beams varied with the deformed shape of the metallic fibers. The toughness indices of the fiber reinforced beams were computed from the area under the static load deflection curve. The toughness indices for two of the three type of metallic fiber reinforced beams were greater than for the synthetic fiber reinforced beams. Jornet","doi":"10.14359/10018","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/10018","url":null,"abstract":"A comprehensive research program was carried out to evaluate the quality of the outer layer of concrete (the 'covercrete'), in terms of its durability and protective value to the underlying reinforcing bars. Part of the results of that investigation are presented in this paper, namely those dealing with the influence of the concrete grade and cement type on the permeability to oxygen and water obsorption properties of the 'covercrete' of concrete specimens subjected to 7 days moist + 21 days dry curing. The results obtained show that the permeability to oxygen is reduced 40 times when the concrete strength is raised from 25 to 85 MPa, whilst the rate of water obsorption is reduced by a factor of 4. In search of such an anode, a new water-based conductive coating was used recently on the cathodic protection of some concrete piers in Virginia. Further, as a possible means of eliminating the need for regular site visits to inspect and ensure that the CP is functioning properly (which is a disadvantage common to existing CP systems), a microprocessor-based data acquisition device that facilitates remote monitoring was tested with the system. This paper presents the design, construction, and performance histories of selected RCC applications, including Willow Creek Dam, Elk Creek Dam, Addicks and Barker Dams, Chena River Lake Project, and RCC Pavements.
