Countless overlays are commercially available for repairing deteriorated surfaces. However, the essential data provided by manufacturers is very limited and, even if it is available, it is normally limited to room temperature values. This persuaded Canadian Electrical Association to financially support a comprehensive study on commercial overlays, especially from the viewpoint of resistance against erosion and the severe climatic conditions observed in northern parts of Canada. This paper presents laboratory test data on the erosion resistance and durability properties of various types of commercial overlays such as comentitious grouts, polymer-modified cement-based mortars and epoxy mortars.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127156700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accelerated exposure testing confirmed that zinc coating was able to considerably delay the onset of corrosion and epoxy coating effectively eliminated corrosion provided the coating was not damaged. Where coated reinforcement was left with cut ends unrepaired, the epoxy coated bars showed early corrosion of the exposed steel with corrosion progressing along the bar under the coating. Even where cut ends were repaired, the epoxy coated bars showed many sites of breakdown of the repair and corrosion of the underlying steel. For plain reinforcement, the ultimate bond strength of epoxy coated bars is some 17 percent less than that for black steel bars, while that for galvanized bars is some 31 percent greater than for black steel. The ultimate bond strength of deformed bars is up to 50 percent higher than that of plain bars. The passivation of galvanized plain bars by chromate additions to the concrete mix water in the range 15-150 ppm could not be shown to significantly improve the bond strength.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133310511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prior determinations were made on laboratory mortar specimens to determine the threshold level required to sustain expansive reactivity. Results indicated that RH values greater than 80 percent, referenced to 21 degrees to 24 degrees Centigrade, are required to support expansive alkali-silica reactivity. Field measurements revealed that most of the concrete in highways and dams in desert areas are sufficiently damp to sustain expansive ASR.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125164781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five different concrete mixtures were investigated. Twenty one prisms and twenty-one cylinders were made from each mixture and were tested for compressive strength, flexural strength, pulse velocity and dry unit weight. Within each group, three specimens were tested after each of the following heating/cooling cycles: 0, 15, 30, 60, 120, 240, and 400. Each cycle consisted of 60 minutes at 400 degrees F followed by 30 minutes at room temperature. After every 15 heating/cooling cycles, the contaminated specimens were soaked in jet fuel or hydraulic fluid for overnight before the next heating/cooling cycles. Test results indicate that jet fuel contamination is more detrimental than hydraulic fluid contamination. Compressive strength, flexural strength, and pulse velocity are adversely affected by the cyclic heating.","PeriodicalId":274481,"journal":{"name":"\"SP-126: Durability of Concrete: Second International Conference, Montreal, Canada 1991\"","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133866097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
