This document presents the design and implementation of an electro-mechanical system for the simulation of medical scenarios of the respiratory system of neonatal patients. The system implements three possible scenarios, including the application of a chest massage technique developed at the School of Medicine at Universidad Nacional. The system uses two graphical user interfaces (GUI). In the first GUI, a medical situation is created by a doctor using a series of parameters representing important clinical data. The second GUI presents the scenario to the student about to carry on his/her practice. Previous work has suggested that using automated techniques to recover decisions and structures from whichever project artifacts are actually kept may be a reasonable solution, but empirical evaluations of this claim are scarce. This article describes: (1) the TREx design decision and architecture structure recovery technique and tool, (2) precision and recall measures of recovery effectiveness for system structure, and (3) an experimental design to evaluate design decision and structure recovery approaches. An initial experimental evaluation of manual versus tool-supported TREx shows that using the tool increases recall, but yield mixed results on precision: decrease structure recovery precision, but increase decision recovery. Also anecdotic evidence suggest that only Experts were systematically better in recovering decisions without tool-support. A simplified model for arc voltage is used for designing the control strategies. Intelligent control algorithms such as Knowledge Based Fuzzy Control (KBFC), Neural Control and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) Controller are presented. This information is processed in three stages: feature extraction using cepstral coefficients and the myoelectric signal entropy, pattern classification using a perceptron neural network and data fusion from a Kalman filter. A compatibility test is introduced based on Mahalanobis distance with the aim to detect possible artifacts to come from the estimated angle at the neural network output. The method was tested in healthy subjects, and the results were compared with another work that was based solely on myoelectric signals. Actually, the most widely used noise reduction methods are based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The main advantages of these methods are that they work with non-stationary signals and have the ability to perform a multi-resolution analysis. In counterpart, its main disadvantage is that the amount of required data memory difficult their implementation in a low cost digital signal processor (DSP). The main goal of this work is to implement a noise reduction algorithm based on the DWT in a dsPIC of Microchip. The approach is based in the use of first order Model of Volterra-Laguerre (VLM) and based in this criterion the laminator system is then identified by using input-output data obtained from the system. For this purpose a set of Orthogonal Functions contained in a finite Basis (OBF), were used to represent the Volterra kernels, such that the nonlinearities and changes in the \"time varying system\" were tracked faithfully. This article reviews the use of NFC in the healthcare sector. Application areas, use cases, potential benefits and barriers, will be presented. The present study provides guidance for researchers in adopting and deploying NFC in medical sector. The main healthcare and security applications are patient's identification and medication control. NFC can also be used in deploying resource control, management and data acquisition and remote delivery applications. The main benefits of NFC are: improvement of care quality, existence of standards and applications with friendly human interface. The changes in diameter of retinal vessels are an important sign of diseases such as hypertension, arteriosclerosis and diabetes, and may be used for the prevention of further consequences caused by the hypertension such as heart attack, brain stroke and renal failure. Those changes are reflected as arteriolar narrowing which changes the vessel caliber, and modify the arterious venous rate (AVR). Obtaining precise measurements of vascular widths is a critical and demanding process in automated retinal image analysis. A prototype system is developed for measuring the vessels caliber, calculates the AVR and determines the presence of Hypertensive Retinopathy. The process is implemented using different techniques of image and signal analysis including Gabor wavelet, gradients, morphological operations and Niblack. A classification algorithm is also implemented to separate veins from arteries. The diameter measurement is based on the image skeleton and the perpendicular segment of the vessel. The identification scheme is based on a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm to fit the motor and model startup stator currents curves. Two different strategies are compared. The first one adds the saturation effects on the magnetizing inductance after using a linear inductance model in the identification process, the second one includes the magnetic saturation curve through the model identification process. The resultant models are tested in a variable flux motor control system.
