A wide comparison is drawn between the physical properties of hydrogen, alcohol and fossil fuels. A review of safety issues and storage is given. Sample tests on hydrogen tank leak and hydrogen tank drop tests from literature are presented.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Fuel cells, however, despite their potential to provide US energy security and providing a key technology against global warming, must overcome several economic and technical barriers, one of which is the development of a hydrogen fuel infrastructure. This paper provides a basic overview of these barriers and summarizes the necessary challenges.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. The use of high energy density materials, as well as their highly thermally stable counterparts, has revolutionized the design and production of many diverse devices. Through continued development efforts, these high energy density materials have been formed into new geometries with interesting performance characteristics. The materials themselves have undergone ongoing research producing materials with remnant magnetization values in excess of 15.0 kG and intrinsic coercivities exceeding 35 kOe. The development of annular geometries in combination with the improvements in magnetic and geometrical property sets have further expanded the application of these materials.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Then it is applied in the frame of a campaign of aging tests on twisted pairs specimens. DGA has more recently been applied as a diagnostic tool for predictive maintenance on load tap changers, LTC's, and oil filled circuit breakers, OCB's. The savings in maintenance costs based on DGA diagnostics are significant. Data interpretation for OCB and LTC dissolved gas analysis is empirical in nature and significantly different than interpretation of DGA data for main tanks. Ratios of heating to arcing gases are informative for LTC and OCB dissolved gas analysis interpretation.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. Fuzzy logic controllers are generally implemented on general-purpose microprocessors or fuzzy chips. This paper presents an overview of the current state of these fieldbus networks. It first gives various advantages of using fieldbus networks over point-to-point connections for control system implementations. Then, the generic ISO/OSI seven-layer communication protocol model is discussed and the deviations from this model for various fieldbus networks are identified. Hardware and software aspects of fieldbus networks are reviewed. Finally, some of the issues in selecting a fieldbus network for a given application are examined.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat. A rigorous maintenance program was instituted and all FRP hot sticks used in live line work must now withstand an annual dielectric test at 105 kVdc per 305 mm with the surface wet consistent with IEEE Std 978. More frequent electrical tests are made using a hand held tester and limits have been set for the hydrophobicity of the surface. In spite of these measures a second flashover a FRP hot stick occurred during live line work at 550 kVac in 2002. Both flashovers occurred during work from the tower on \"v\" suspension insulators, the first at a temperature near the freezing point and the second at a temperature well below freezing. In both cases the wind was blowing from the conductor to the worker. Our investigation is trying to establish an adequate explanation for these events as well as corrective measures. The work to date is summarized in this paper. Industry standards for limits of approach are based on the switching surge withstand of air gaps and should not be equated to the minimum safe leakage distance of FRP hot sticks.","PeriodicalId":274147,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Technology Conference (Cat.
