Research has shown that children with more severe ASD symptoms are more likely to be recognized early (Zablotsky et al., 2017) and children with milder presentations tend to be diagnosed later (Fountain et al., 2011). Recent studies suggest this may be in part due to their lack of more obvious Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors (RRBS) (Gibbs et al., 2012; Barton et al., 2013), one of the two symptom domains for ASD diagnosis in the DSM-5. Parental knowledge of early cognitive development mediates the relationship between education and caregiving behaviors, and pediatric providers are often considered the primary source of this information for low SES parents.
