We investigate the impact of non-omnidirectional propagation pattern of antennas along with the impact of non-uniform distribution of the scatterers in the propagation environment which introduces non-isotropic wave propagation, at both transmitter and receiver ends. The non-isotropic propagation is described by non-uniform probability density functions (pdf) for the direction-of-departure (DOD) and the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the outgoing/incoming propagating waves from/to stations. The propagation patterns of antenna elements (and the effect of mutual coupling between them) are also described by the Fourier series expansion of antenna propagation patterns. The expression of the cross-correlation function (CCF) turns out to be a linear expansion of a number of Bessel functions of the first kind. The coefficients of this expansion are given by linear convolution of the Fourier series coefficients (FSC) of the corresponding antenna patterns and the FSCs of the corresponding pdf of the non-isotropic propagation directions. The Fourier analysis on the CCF shows impacts of non-isotropic environment and non-omnidirectional antennas on the spectrum of the received channel process while the maximum Doppler frequency shift remains invariant with variations of beam-patterns and the pdf of propagating waves.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127508544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To establish physical communication links between nodes with distinct complexity requirements, asymmetric transceivers need to be designed. In the ultra-wideband (UWB) regime, there are two major complexity issues: sampling rate and channel estimation. In this paper, we develop very low-complexity UWB receiver;, which are capable of collecting multipath diversity by sampling at a fraction of the Nyquist rate as well as circumventing channel estimation. By doing so, we establish asymmetric UWB links to account for and take advantage of the heterogeneity among network nodes. Our analysis and simulations confirm that our low-complexity diversity receiver is operational with both single-band and multi-band UWB transmitters.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"83 12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122112090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the number of data-carrying tones ranges from 48 (as in the IEEE 802.11a/g standards) to 6817 (as in the DVB-T standard), the corresponding computational complexity will in general be significant. This paper presents two algorithms for interpolation-based QR decomposition in MIMO-OFDM systems. An in-depth computational complexity analysis shows that the proposed algorithms, for a sufficiently high number of data-carrying tones and small channel order exhibit significantly smaller complexity than brute-force per-tone QR decomposition.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115625316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For slowly varying channels, the estimation process can be performed on a block of symbols assuming that the channel is constant over the block. This algorithm enhances the performance in terms of channel estimation with the additional advantage of a linear arithmetical complexity. In this paper, we propose an EM-MAP algorithm which takes into account a channel correlation model between the coefficients of the block structure. Simulations results presented in the context of 5 GHz WLANs show that this new algorithm performs better than the EM-block algorithm in the mobile environment.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124799381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From earlier investigations, it is known that this channel suffers with multipath fading and frequency selectivity. Nevertheless, the calculated channel capacity limit promises very high data rates over this channel, subject to simple fixes. Enhancement techniques, such as coding can help an OFDM system to achieve this limit as close as possible. The smart use of coding and power allocation in OFDM will be useful to get the desired performance at higher data rates. These theoretic facts are confirmed by means of computer simulations.","PeriodicalId":273666,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 6th Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, 2005.","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125560516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
