Especially at school, the teachers need to enrich the strategy in teaching and learning process. The objectives of this study were to find out 1) the improvement of students’ reading comprehension of the ninth grade (IXC) of SMPN 13 North Bengkulu, 2) some factors influence the change of students’ reading comprehension at the ninth grade (IX C) of SMPN 13 North Bengkulu. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) involved 25 students of the ninth grade of SMPN 13 North Bengkulu. Quantitative and qualitative data were employed to investigate the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension and the factors influence the changes of students’ reading comprehension. Reading comprehension test, observation checklists and field notes, and interview were the instruments of this research. Based on the test results, the percentage of students who had achieved the success criteria increased from 8% at the baseline to 80% at the end of the study. It was carried out at the second-grade students of the Quran Science and interpretation study program (IAT) academic year 2020/2021. This study employed descriptive-survey research. There were 34 students becoming the participants of this study. The researchers employed the questionnaire, which consisted of twelve statements to get the data about students’ motivation. it was divided to nine statements about intrinsic motivation and three statements for extrinsic motivation. The data obtained revealed that for intrinsic motivations level, the students were at a high level of motivation with a total mean score of 4. 09 and for extrinsic motivation, the total mean score was 3.97, and it showed that students were also at high level of motivation. Thus, it can be summarized that the students have both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in studying English although they were non-English Department students. Moreover, the students’ intrinsic motivation in learning English was higher than extrinsic motivation. It can be said that the students were able to control themselves to learn English, even though there was not much external motivation from lecturers or others. Regarding the result of this research, future researchers are expected to conduct depth research related to this topic. Pilu, Nurfajriah Basri","doi":"10.33369/joall.v7i1.20418","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33369/joall.v7i1.20418","url":null,"abstract":"This article reports on a narrative case study that showcases the local English teachers’ perceived inequality practices and identity construction in Indonesia’s micro-reality context of a private language school domain. Grounded in the social theory of power, privilege, and positional identities, three synchronous online interviews were conducted to explore the LETs voices about what it means to experience the equality of rights and obligations in the workplace. As a result, the study revealed four inequality issues: (1) dissatisfaction with the payroll system, (2) the representation of gender and race in promotional endorsement, (3) the call for decolonizing pedagogy in ELT materials and resources, and (4) perceived identity as legitimate and qualified English teachers. Regarding the workload capacity and role as professional English teachers, they recognized that they deserve equal treatment as their native counterparts. However, this type of discrimination will further widen the gap between LETs and NESTs dichotomy and impede the construction of language teacher identity. This study suggests exploring dedicated strategies to develop information literacy skills for school principals, parents, teachers, students, and policymakers. This research was conducted at Islamic Senior High School 2 North Bengkulu. The method applied in this research was quantitative with a quasi-experimental design. The total sample used for this study was 70 students consisting of 35 students from the eleventh grade of natural sciences class 1 (experimental class) and 35 students from the class eleventh grade of natural sciences class 2 (control class). The instrument in this study was an online oral test and the data was the students' pre-test and post-test scores which were calculated and analyzed using SPSS 26 software. Then, the results obtained were used to determine whether there was an effect given by variable x to variable v. This study aims to describe the results of analyzing relevant research articles regarding the use of English movie/film for enhancing the cultural competence of EFL learners. This study was descriptive-qualitative. The data were taken from 7 (seven) research articles related to the study objective. In collecting the data (the research articles), the researcher conducted literature research or library research. It was carried out by searching, identifying, and selecting the research articles related to the study objective from electronic databases. Then, the data were analyzed by using qualitative data analysis which consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing the conclusion. The results showed that the seven research articles reported the enhancement of EFL learners’ cultural competence in terms of students’ attitude, knowledge, skills and cultural awareness. In addition, 3 research articles reported the enhancement of students’ language skills i.e., speaking, vocabulary, reading, and listening through learning activities done during and after watching and analyzing English movies. Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers pay attention to the culture teaching in ELT. This new learning policy from the government might lead to the betterment or instead create new learning issues. Reflected from the online learning implementation, rural students suffer more compared to urban students. Therefore, this study aimed at exploring rural students’ perceptions towards the transition of online into offline limited learning teaching. A survey study was carried out in the state junior high school 3 Purbatua, North Sumatra, involving 49 students from level 7 to 9 grades. The students were provided with a close-ended questionnaire investigating their perceptions in terms of course content coverage, learning effectiveness, and learning interaction. This turned out that most students were less satisfied with the conductivity of limited offline teaching. Students’ satisfaction in the limited offline teaching needs to be considered to have an effective teaching and learning atmosphere. This might be beneficial both to the government and teachers as a reflection to maintain a more appropriate limited offline teaching. There is, however, a paucity of research on secondary EFL teachers' perceptions of online learning challenges, notably in four major areas: technology use, instruction, assessment, and students. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive quantitative study is to examine secondary EFL teachers' perspectives of the challenges they encounter in dealing with the aforementioned issues. The participants included 73 upper and lower secondary English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher. A closed-item questionnaire was deployed, with a total of 38 items addressing issues related to online learning challenges. The findings reveal that secondary EFL teachers in Indonesia reported medium-level challenges in teaching EFL online in terms of technology use, instruction, assessment, and students, whilst challenges in assessing students in online learning were identified as the highest. This is qualitative in nature employing descriptive method as the research design. The data were obtained from test items of Indonesian language school examinations in a public senior vocational school which delivered to twelve graders in the academic year of 2019 with 45 questions in total. The data were documented and analyzed qualitatively. This turned out that operational verbs of the cognitive realm based on Anderson’s taxonomy are two items of remembering, two items of classifying, an item of summarizing, four items of inferring, an item of predicting, three items of interpreting, an item of executing, six items of analyzing, twenty items of selecting, two items of assessing, an item of checking, and two items of formulating which accounted for 24 verbs in total. Previous studies have shown that listening while watching videos can significantly aid students’ comprehension. However, videos were rarely used as testing materials since they contained more than aural input so they did not ‘really’ test listening. This study explored the extent to which multimodal testing materials can be used in testing listening comprehension for EFL students and how the results would differ from that of mono modality testing materials. The participants were 100 students of the English Department, Bina Nusantara University (henceforth Binus) University Jakarta. The researchers gave them two kinds of tests: the video listening test (VLT) and audio listening test (ALT). The materials were two short videos from YouTube. The first test, ALT was given after the participants listened to the videos twice. On the contrary, VLT was administered after they watched the videos twice. To examine the differences in the effects of VLT or ALT on EFL students’ performance in listening comprehension, the data were analyzed quantitatively. The results indicate that students got better scores for VLT compared to ALT. This research is purposed to analyze complimenting behavior by males and females found on celebrities’ Instagram comments. This research employed descriptive qualitative research through a documentaries method. 250 comments from 10 most-followed celebrities’ (five males and five females) comment columns were used to identify the complimenting behavior in the form of words, phrases, or clauses containing compliments. This revealed that the differences between males and females in complimenting behavior showed who complimented, to whom they complimented, the compliment types, and the compliment forms. Females complimented more than males did. Besides, complimenting celebrities is commonly directed at the same sex rather than across sex. However, both males and females were more likely to use direct compliments and less indirect compliments. Compliments by both males and females also showed that direct compliment form 8 (ADJ NP!) is dominantly used. The dominance of form 8 occurrence indicated that shorter form of compliment seemed suitable and reasonable for a virtual interaction like Instagram. From this research analysis, it can be concluded that some different contexts of communication require other compliment forms.
