For clustering analysis, this situation generates an ill-balanced data problem among different classes of voxels. In this paper we propose a novel method to overcome the ill-balanced data problem by eliminating the inactive voxels prior to the application of the clustering algorithm. The proposed method is based on a region homogeneity criterion in which the homogeneity is determined on the basis of the variance explained by the first principal component in the principal component analysis (PCA) of a given voxel and its neighbors. We present the results of application of the proposed method for both simulated and real fMRI data. The results advocate that the proposed method effectively solves the ill-balanced data problem by eliminating most of the inactive voxels while retaining the functionally active voxels.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129709446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At first, a UWB antenna is designed in the UWB low band for implant use in the chest. Then the channel model is extracted and established based on finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation with an anatomical human body model. The established channel model consists of a small set of parameters for generating discrete time impulse responses. The generated model shows good agreement with the FDTD-calculated result in terms of key communication metrics. For effective communication over the multipath-affected channel, the pulse position modulation is employed and a 2-finger RAKE structure with a constant temporal delay is proposed in the receiver. The bit error rate performance has shown the validity of the system in the in-body to out-of-body chest channel.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122845048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efficient transceiver design requires in-depth understanding of the propagation media which in this case is the human body surface. The results of the few measurement experiments in recent publications point to varying conclusions in the derived parameters of the channel model. As obtaining large amount of data for many scenarios and use-cases is difficult for this channel, a detailed simulation platform can be extremely beneficial in highlighting the propagation behavior of the body surface and determining the best scenarios for limited physical measurements. In this paper, an immersive visualization environment is presented, which is used as a scientific instrument that gives us the ability to observe three-dimensional RF propagation from wearable medical sensors around a human body. We have used this virtual environment to further study UWB channels over the surface of a human body. Parameters of a simple statistical path-loss model and their sensitivity to frequency and the location of the sensors on the body are discussed.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123698024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the image datasets acquired from LSCEM are generally with low z-depth resolution, which causes artifacts in volume rendering. Intermediate data between consecutive images needs to be generated. One common solution uses trilinear interpolation which more or less reduces the artifacts, but blocky artifacts are clearly visible especially in the areas of low spatial resolution. The current shape-based interpolation techniques cannot effectively remove such artifacts since they rely on the hard classification for identification of shape features. At the same time, the higher order interpolation schemes like cubic b-spline interpolation take much time to process the slices. In this paper, we propose a novel GPU-based surface oriented inter-slice directional interpolation algorithm to recover the missing information and thus minimize the interpolation artifacts. Our algorithm enjoys full floating point precision offered by the modern GPU to enhance the visualization result. Experimental results on several datasets clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121502565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides other characteristics, storage capabilities of individual sensor nodes have to be considered as this might be very small compared to the collected sensor data. The temporal availability of sink nodes or the importance of collected data are not equal for all nodes and, therefore, demand storage of the generated data locally for later retrieval. Furthermore, data items (detected events) may be collected at different rates, which can lead to hotspot-like storage requirements. In this paper, we introduce a data-centric cooperative storage mechanism for wireless senor networks. Our approach is based on Virtual Cord Protocol (VCP), a virtual relative position based efficient routing protocol that also provides means for data management, e.g. insert, get, delete, and replicate, as known from typical Distributed Hash Table (DHT) services. Data items are distributed deterministically over several nodes in the same vicinity. Thus, storing and retrieving data items typically require communication with local nodes. To maintain information about stored information, we use a bloom filter to track the nodes that are storing particular items.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121584475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sensor nodes are becoming more and more miniaturized, equipped with radio transceivers, and deployed in large quantities. However, due to their limitations in computational and communication capabilities, clustering techniques are usually applied for energy conservation, where designated nodes known as cluster heads collect data from their nearby cluster members and route the data in a multi-hop manner towards a the required final destination, known as a sink. However, as the number and heterogeneity of nodes increases, a distributed control becomes a necessary requirement. In this paper, we discuss the dynamics in the interactions among a multi-layered self-adaptive clustering protocol for WSNs, separated in clustering and routing layers. Each layer operates independently and utilizes a biologically-inspired adaptation scheme allowing the layers to interact and adapt to environmental changes effectively and in a self-organized manner.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121654449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The protocol is termed MINEC (MIMO Network Coding). A three nodes network with multi-antennas on relay node is taken as an illustrative example of MINEC. In step one of MINEC, two source nodes transmit message simultaneously; in step two, the relay node broadcasts coded data with network and space-time coding. A binary symmetric relay channel model is used to carry out the theoretical performance analysis of MINEC. The theoretical findings are validated by Monte-Carlo-simulation. It is found that MINEC facilitates a performance equivalent to a 2×2 V-BLAST MIMO and a two 2×1 Alamouti MIMO in transmitting phase and forwarding phase, respectively.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122596093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
