They can effectively incorporate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules, and therefore have been widely applied as a carrier for gene and drug delivery. Moreover, liposomes are considered as a novel vaccine delivery system, which encapsulate both Antigen (Ag) and immunomodulatory agents, facilitating Ag delivery to specific immune cells in vivo. Till date, liposomal vaccines against various diseases, such as cancer, HIV, Hepatitis B and malaria, have been investigated and found to be safe. However, their immunogenicity remains to be further improved [1]. Although conventional liposomes are usually formulated with neutral and/or negatively charged lipids, many studies indicated that the cationic liposomes with positive surface charge more effectively enhanced Ag-specific immune response and promoted vaccine-induced anti-cancer responses than other liposomes [2]. On the other hand, cationic liposomes at a high concentration significantly induced apoptosis of dendritic cells and suppressed immune response, suggesting the immunotoxic effect [3]. In the present study, we incorporated 1, 2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), a neutral lipid into dioleoyl-3-trimethylammoniumpropane (DOTAP), a cationic liposome, and investigate the effect of different liposome formulations on monocyte activation and viability. Our aim is to develop a safe and effective liposomal adjuvant for vaccine delivery.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114567094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This kind of events cannot be detected with tactile sensors sensing only the normal (perpendicular) component of the forces acting between surfaces. Our approach utilizes an integrated sensing-processing-actuating system comprising: (1) A 8×8 taxel (tactile pixel) array mounted on a tri-fingered robot hand, (2) event detector central unit (3) a closed loop controller. This arrangement, along with the proper pattern recognition algorithm, allows the detection and the control of the tactile event. It is essential to know and comprehend the forces between contact surfaces and the related 3D pressure fields.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117323643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several measurement campaigns and associated modeling have been carried out in either a radio anechoic chamber or a specific room type; however, dependence of the radio propagation on surrounding environments has not been studied. Multipaths (mainly reflected from floor, ceiling, and walls) depend particularly highly on the environment. Propagation measurements were carried out (including lower body sections) in three different surrounding environments: a radio anechoic chamber, a classroom, and a small room. The propagation losses of continuous wave (6.85 GHz), low-band UWB (3.4–4.8 GHz), and high-band UWB (7.25–10.25 GHz) were evaluated in comparison with that of full-band UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz). Parameters in a conventional propagation loss model were derived from the measured data. The parameters were found to significantly diverge and depend on room volume and body sections. A modified model considering the impact of the room volume has been proposed for individual body sections. Different propagation mechanisms were discussed along with the parameter derivation. Probability distributions for the UWB propagation loss and delay spreads were also examined.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124794599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ANAPP method models the EEG signals as a combination of five a priori “spontaneous cortical oscillations” whose amplitudes and phases are established using an adaptive algorithm. While in a series of previous researches [1], [2] the amplitude features of the model were extensively used, in this research the opportunity of using supplementary the phase information within the BCI system is analyzed. In addition, in this paper, the number and the type of the input features that feed the classification system are optimized using a GA algorithm. The final goals are to obtain both a faster BCI system and better classification results.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128817805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main idea behind SOA is the separation of the functions of the system into well-defined, independent, reusable and distributable services. However, sometimes physicians require a more specific or slightly different functionality than the existing services offer. In these situations the system architecture imposes the time-consuming and error-prone development and testing of a new service. To counter this, a framework was developed that integrates a Rule-based component with the existing SOA platform. This allows users to add new functionalities as easy understandable Rules. This integration can be constructed in two ways. In the database-driven approach the Rule-based system is an extra layer between the database and the services. The service-oriented approach, on the other hand, works with the data provided by the services and does not interact directly with the database. Both approaches are detailed and compared to each other. Both solutions were evaluated with a medical use case, namely detecting Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) in patients in the ICU.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116331666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EMF measurements were made in workplaces, we applied special questionnaires, performed micronucleus test from lymfocytes, and urinary thioethers assay. The results were compared to those of a control group by statistical analytical methods like logistic regression. We found an overexposure of this profession to diathermy procedures and magnetodiaflux. Significant relationships were found for presented syndromes(astheno-vegetative, neurological, cardiovascular), biological parameters (micronucleus, urinary thioethers) and values of exposure to RF EMF, respectively ELF EMF, and RF+ELF. We investigate how a heterogeneous medical wireless sensor network, generating periodic data from different medical sensors, can be optimized in terms of throughput and delivery ratio. By utilizing the property of periodicity, we have implemented a packet scheduler that can, in a decentralized manner, predict the channel availability with a given probabilistic model. We evaluate the Periodic MAC protocol for multirate wireless biomedical sensor networks where we show through simulation how the assumption of periodicity will be affected by errors caused by noisy environments and hidden terminals. The results show that, when influenced by random errors, the assumption of periodicity does not cause significantly higher degradation of performance than regular CSMA-CA, and the protocol has a significant advantage over regular CSMA-CA when hidden terminals are present.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134200338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
