They contain only optical components and are intrinsically different from optical networks currently being used. More specifically, AONs provide transparent features that allow routing and data switching without necessitating the interpretation or regression of signals within the network. Consequently, AON components and architectures bring forth a set of new challenges in network security. The paper presents an overview of security issues in AONs and proposes the design criteria for network management in AONs. Broadband access and in-house networks are prerequisites for both business and private customers for future multimedia Internet communication. Current solutions for providing capacities of more than 100 Mbit/s to residential customers and up to several gigabits per second to business customers and enterprises are too expensive in both installation and operation, and are not ready for volume production. As potential candidates for overcoming cost barriers, WDM based solutions of optical access networks are the main focus of this contribution, where aspects of cost-efficiency, simplicity, versatility, and practical issues of installation and introduction are addressed. Fiber Bragg gratings are key components for the development of low-cost microwave photonics. Reliability and high tunability capacity are some of the specific advantages of using fiber Bragg gratings. For this purpose we investigate the shift of the Bragg-matched wavelength in a sensor with a Bragg grating as well as the change of birefringence in a polarimetric sensor. For the sake of simplicity we concentrate on the response of the sensor to temperature. In this method, a bulk photorefractive crystal takes the role of generating various speckle fields as well as storing a number of holograms. The hologram multiplexing and the selective retrieving are demonstrated with the speckled reference beam generated by the beam-fanning effect in a photorefractive BaTiO/sub 3/ crystal. The speckle field of the reference beam to record multiple holograms is varied by changing the spatial phase distribution or the intensity distribution of the original reference beam. We can successfully reconstruct the desired image from multiplexed holograms with the reference beam speckled by the beam-fanning effect in both procedures.
