The proposed device is several times smaller than the corresponding conventional QWR and contains about 15 limes less anisotropic material. Together with the apparent absence of form anisotropy, it suggests that material birefringence can be considerably enhanced when the material in question is arranged in a deterministic non-periodic fashion, presumably by localization of light that is known to occur in such systems.","PeriodicalId":272700,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2003 5th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2003.","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124904114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results presented here shows, that analysis of mode properties using BV diagrams for guiding modes is difficult to apply in the case. To omit the problem, we have used computation of the normalized propagation constant of a waveguiding mode B versus vacuum propagation constant k. In result, the single-mode conditions for defect area formed by one removed air-hole were find.","PeriodicalId":272700,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2003 5th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2003.","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122080887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The combination of a high-quality 2D periodic structure with a high refractive index contrast in ma-Si opens the way to its application as a 2D photonic crystal. A photonic band gap appears if light propagates in a direction perpendicular to pore axis. The spectral position and width of the gap are defined by the structure symmetry, inter-pore distance, and pore radius. For the light propagating parallel to the pore axis, ma-Si can be used as a shortpass filter, transparent in the short-wavelength range and blocking the long-wavelength radiation. In ma-Si filters, light propagates in air in pores surrounded by silicon, absorbing visible light. The pore dimensions, i.e., their diameter and length, define the filter transmission spectrum. As far as we know by now, only one study devoted to ma-Si transmission in the visible range exists. The present study is devoted to further experimental and theoretical investigation of the ma-Si transmission in the visible range for the light propagating parallel to pore axis.","PeriodicalId":272700,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2003 5th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2003.","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129069004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper studies resource utilization in an optical mesh network under different allocation strategies. Traffic grooming is done following two different strategies: optical end-to-end (transparent) and hop-by-hop (opaque). The first scenario is advantageous when connection request capacity approaches that of the optical channels. Hop-by-hop offers the advantage of allowing intermediate nodes to re-use an already active optical channel with free bandwidth. A comparison in terms of the number of line terminating equipment items (SDH ports) and the number of active optical channels (wavelengths) in a generic mesh network is provided. Quantitative results are obtained by means of simulation.","PeriodicalId":272700,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2003 5th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2003.","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114020441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
