Abstract

An erbium doped SiO/sub 2/-TiO/sub 2/ planar amplifier, ytterbium sensitised, is designed by means of a home made computer code. For the small signal operation, a gain close to G = 7.48 dB and a noise figure F = 4.08 dB are calculated for a waveguide 3 cm long, erbium concentration N/sub Er/ = 2.8 /spl times/ 10/sup 26/ ions/m/sup 3/, ytterbium concentration N/sub Yb/ = 1.4 /spl times/ 10/sup 27/ ions/m/sup 3/, by using pump power of P/sub p/(0) = 200 mW.
