Electrification of LDVs is posed as a potential solution, but SI engines can still contribute to decarbonization. Car manufacturers have turned to unconventional engine operation to increase the efficiency of Spark-Ignition (SI) engines and reduce the carbon emissions of their fleets. Dilute, lean, and stratified-charge engine operation has the potential for engine efficiency improvements at the expense of increased cyclic variability and combustion instability. At such demanding engine conditions, the spark ignition event is key for flame initiation and propagation and for enhanced combustion stability. Reliable and accurate spark ignition models can help design ignition systems that reduce cyclic variability. Multiple computational spark-ignition models exist that perform well under conventional conditions, but the underlying physics needs to be expanded, for unconventional engine operation. In this paper, a hybrid Lagrangian–Eulerian Spark-Ignition (LESI) model is coupled with different turbulent flame propagation models for engine simulations. LESI relies on Lagrangian arc tracking and Eulerian energy deposition. The LESI model is coupled with the Well-Stirred Reactor (WSR), Thickened Flame Model (TFM), and g-equation model and used to simulate several cycles of a Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition (DISI) engine using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) engine solver. The results showcase the successful coupling of LESI with the combustion models. Global engine metrics, such as pressure and Apparent Heat Release Rate (AHRR), for each simulation setup are compared to experimental engine results, for validation. In addition, results highlight the successful prediction of spark channel movement by comparing simulation images to experimental optical engine images. Finally, the successful coupling of LESI to combustion models, making it a usable model in the engine modeling community, is emphasized and future development details are discussed.","PeriodicalId":272133,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology for Energy Transition","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115766018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deep saline aquifers may be well suited for the safe and long-term storage given their geological structure. The long term underground storage in saline aquifers depends on variety of interrelated trapping mechanisms in addition to the caprock sealing efficiency. Fractures are commonplace in many geological settings and represent a crucial role for hydrocarbon migrations and entrapment. Fracture impact fluid flow in variety of forms, particularly due to the complexity and varying natures of the fractures, which channel the injected CO2 throughout the reservoir formation. This is especially important for tight gas reservoirs and low permeable cap rock structures whose permeability is primarily characterized by the fault and fractures. This outlines the importance of determining accurately fracture penetration in wellbores for CO2 injection. We present a new deep learning framework for the detection of fractures in formation image logs for enhancing CO2 storage. Fractures may represent high velocity gas flow channels which may make CO2 storage a challenge. The novel deep learning framework incorporates both acoustic and electrical formation image logs for the detection of fractures in wellbores for CO2 storage enhancement and injection optimization. The framework was evaluated on the Pohokura-1 well for the detection of fractures, with the framework exhibiting strong classification accuracy. The framework could accurately classify the fractures based on acoustic and electrical image logs in 98.1% for the training and 85.6% for the testing dataset. Furthermore, estimates of the fracture size are strong, indicating the ability of the framework to accurately quantify fracture sizes in order to optimize CO2 injection and storage.","PeriodicalId":272133,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology for Energy Transition","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130926003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stress concentrations occurred at the brazed joint with a maximum alternating stress amplitude of 153.45 MPa. The fatigue life of brazed structures during the continuous cool-down and heat-up conditions was evaluated based on the ASME standard and the maximum alternating stress amplitude. Meanwhile, structure parameters have been analyzed for their influence on fatigue life. There are four main structure factors to influence the life cycle: the brazing seam, the fin thickness, the fin distance, and the fin height. The life cycle will decrease with increasing the fin distance, fin height, and brazing seam thickness, and it will increase with increasing the fin thickness. In addition, in order to predict fatigue life, a calculating model has been established based on the main factors. Finally, the fatigue life of brazing structures was also tested by experiment, and the microstructure was also analyzed for the fatigue fracture surface. It is clear that brittle fractures along the brazing seam and ductile fractures at the fin roots should be the primary failure modes. The study provides a base for LNG aluminum heat exchanger design, manufacture, and safe operation.","PeriodicalId":272133,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology for Energy Transition","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123734581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the UFPV-LES approach is evaluated for ECN Spray A baseline conditions, relevant for diesel engines. After confirming its general applicability, using experimental data under non-reacting and reacting conditions, special attention is paid to the distribution of the local scalar dissipation rate. Based on the findings of this analysis, a reduced modeling approach, considering only igniting flamelets starting from the adiabatic mixing line between the fuel and oxidizer, is investigated. The performance of this reduced approach is assessed systematically, using the UFPV-LES results as a reference. Based on an a-priori analysis, regions affected by the model reduction are identified and evaluated. A subsequent evaluation in an a-posteriori analysis, i.e. a coupled LES, reveals similar results in terms of local flame structure as well as global ignition characteristics and confirms the applicability of the reduced model under the ECN Spray A baseline conditions.","PeriodicalId":272133,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology for Energy Transition","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116435438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model is based on a modified vertical porosity-stress law where horizontal strains are inserted and on an elastic stress-strain law with stress-dependent Young modulus. Though it is not three-dimensional and does not involve plasticity, we manage to validate the model on a geometrically and lithologically complex test case by comparing our results with those obtained on the same case using a full-dimensional finite-element simulator. We conclude that our model offers a significant improvement in accuracy against an oedometric model, with little loss in computational time, and so provides a useful tool to users who want a quick insight into results before running longer and more accurate simulations.","PeriodicalId":272133,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology for Energy Transition","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125801267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technology has been increasingly pictured as key to reaching the Paris Agreement targets. But with only a few demonstration projects currently in operation, its deployment is far from projected. The large-scale deployment of BECCS is hindered by economic, social, and environmental barriers that have been subject to an increasing number of studies. As most research on BECCS tends to adopt a central planning perspective, the barriers related to strategic interactions and coordination issues within the BECCS value chain are often overlooked. Based on a systematic literature review, we identify coordination-related challenges for BECCS deployment. We describe three challenges to BECCS deployment that should be further examined through the lens of coordination: (i) trading biomass and ensuring its sustainability; (ii) reducing costs through synergies with other industries and shared CO2 infrastructures; and (iii) coordinating policies internationally to provide revenues for BECCS.","PeriodicalId":272133,"journal":{"name":"Science and Technology for Energy Transition","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126855013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
