The study examines first-ever Pakistani web series in order to explore the representation of gender roles through dialogues that is being used to construct an image of socially constructed responsibilities of gender in Pakistani society. By employing liberal feminism as the theoretical framework, the study stresses the idea of individuality and self-realization by providing women equal opportunities in all spheres of life. The concept of self-realization specifically lightens the phenomenon of individuality as it is significant for women to know their value and self-worth in society as an individual. While analyzing the dialogues of web-series, the study conducts qualitative content analysis to interpret the contextual meanings of dialogues which shows that Pakistani web-series represent females as a source of objectification whereas male characters in the series show hate against females. On contrary, the study also discloses that Pakistani web-series are emphasizing the significance of self-realization as many dialogues show that females express their self-worth by raising their voices against crimes and fighting for their own rights","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127902045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted via a multi-modal analysis of photographs of trans-genders published in two leading dailies of Pakistan. The analysis was conducted on two levels according to the meta-functions of the visual design as proposed by Kress & van Leeuwen (1996), which are ideational and interpersonal.  On the ideational level, five themes emerged which were categorized as images showing confidence, glamour, deprivation, protest, and harassment. The number of images with the themes of confidence and glamour was significantly more in number in comparison to the themes of deprivation, harassment, and protests which were significantly fewer in number although they bear the closest affinity to the everyday lives of the subjects. On the interpersonal level, it is interesting that most of the photographs maintained direct eye contact between the subject and the viewer and thus create an interpersonal bond. A major anomaly that was observed referred to the absolute exclusion of female to male transgenders or trans-males, which is another case of symbolic annihilation. ","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123709539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This LHW programme has managed to develop a system that connects rural communities, especially women with the first-level care facility in communities with a great focus on maternal health care. The current paper aims to identify the challenges and issues faced by lady health workers while they work in rural communities and emphasise on women’s maternal health rights. The study has also assessed the administrative hurdles at the government level that undermines the performance of LHW while working in rural communities of South Punjab. This research is qualitative in nature. Data has been collected using the method of focus group discussion (FGD). Two FGDs were conducted from each district of South Punjab known as Muzaffargarh and RajunPur. Thematic analysis has been used to analyse the data. The study will be helpful for policymakers, health departments and other government agencies. It may assist them to formulate and plan better maternal health care programmes while focusing on hurdles in its way like the socio-cultural issues and improving the working of existing programmes like LHW in country","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134511928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The traditional urban theories define space as unchangeable physical reality that profoundly affects its inhabitants. Feminist urban theorists question the traditional gendered perspective on both space and corporeality. Drawing on Elizabeth Grosz (1998) concept on bodies cities, I will investigate how woman as being both spectator and spectacle renegotiates her identity within the patriarchal urban spaces. This research argues that Grosz’s (1998) concept of Bodies-cities is an important intervention in our understanding of spatial politics in postcolonial spaces, as it discusses how female bodies play an important role in the formation of urban corporeality. Her seminal feminist work invents a new insight into the city-body nexus that also helps to address issues such as gender discrimination, inequalities, and urban violence.","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125657347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of empowering women cannot be achieved, without effective participation and representation of women in political activities, the political decision-making process, and structure. Women’s access to resources and opportunities is quite limited compared to men's all over the world. Likewise, in Pakistan socio-cultural environment is not much favorable for women. Punjab is its largest province in terms of population and is considered more progressive regarding gender-related matters; a vast disparity still exists in all sectors. To ensure empowerment, the appointment of women legislators as decision-makers is mandatory. The paper seeks to explore the appointment of women legislators in decision-making positions in the Punjab assembly. The primary objective is to highlight the significance of women’s leadership, particularly in the legislature, which is a key rule-making organ. The paper adopts mix method research design to explore the selected research problem. The case study method is selected by the researcher. The findings show a very low ratio of women’s inclusion in the legislative assembly of the Punjab and their appointment as decision-makers. The study offers rigorous recommendations that would be helpful to make situations, more conducive for women’s inclusiveness in leadership positions.","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132557713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the basic human rights of dignity, education, health care, financial security, employment opportunities, and equality in all respects ensured to all the citizens of state are discussed and social realizations of these rights for transgender are explored. The findings reveal that transgender persons neither have any representation in the Constitution of Pakistan nor they are the recipients of basic human rights in Pakistani society as compared to other marginalized groups like women, children and differently able people. To conclude, it can be said that although in the last decade, governments have passed some policies (Transgender Persons Welfare Policy, 2018) to empower Transgender community, yet, a long-term nation based social awareness program and implementation of policies are recommended to make transgender persons’ lives better in letter and spirit.","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117135904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the bay between the knowledge and implementation is yet to be bridged.Covid-19 and its aftermaths are leaving their visible marks on almost all spheres of economy, consequently, the restrictive measures put by the government led to abrupt school closures and absence of social life and called for additional contribution of parents. WHO, UNDP and other global bodies’ reports on the aftermaths of pandemic highlighting the need to meet the emotional and psychological needs of the young children. The situation has intensified the parents’ role in general and mothers in particular, we hypothesize that mothers if use their emotional intelligence can help developing a sustainable youth. The sensitivity and the relative importance led us to use a mixed research design as endorsed by Tashakkori & Teddlie (1998), Greene (2007) and Dorneyi, (2007) who call it “multiple ways of seeing and hearing” (p. 20). This mixed design helped in unearthing the deep-set concepts in the minds of research subjects. Results showed a significant relationship between mother’s EI, and child cognitive development in the form of better interpersonal behaviour and better academic results. Mothers with high EI reported a better relationship with the respective children. In conclusion, these findings support the notion that a mother’s EI could have a significant impact on a child’s cognitive development ultimately leading to a need for future research focusing on Mothers’ EI as a tool for the sustainable development of the youth of Pakistan.","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"60 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126081636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this novel, Shafak discusses the experiences of a prostitute and how she encounters physical and psychological violence. The writer has particularly discussed the unjust treatment of sex workers in Istanbul. In this misogynistic world, victimization and marginalization of particular classes of society is exceedingly pervasive. This particular class of sex workers encounters huge discrimination and persistent intolerance. Elif Shafak’s character Leila in ‘10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World’ represents these classes. She is a prostitute who has been compelled to enter this profession and this research attempts to look into those very reasons. Such characters have to carry the social stigma attached to their profession even in liberal societies such as America and Turkey. The researchers look into the savage and merciless treatment that Leila has to undergo solely due to the fact that she is a prostitute. The most heart-wrenching aspect is that though she entered that profession not by choice, she still has to tolerate constant brutality and injustice not only from society but from her own flesh and blood as well. The current examination expects to explore the abjection and belittling attitude confronted by Leila. The findings of research uncovered the maltreatment and ruthlessness done to a girl who fell victim to unforeseen circumstances and ended up in a glittery brothel, not opting willingly rather being engaged for a sad and discriminatory life.","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123196312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, a quantitative cross-sectional research design with a survey was carried out to find out the gender-specific differences in the perception of students. The structured student questionnaire on student-teacher interaction (QTI) by Nugent (2009) was used to gather data. To this end, 300 students were selected (150 male and 150 female students) from various disciplines from a public university in the city of Lahore through a convenient sampling technique. The results revealed the gender-specific differences in the interaction between teachers and students; it was found that male teachers are significantly higher in their attitude and attention-holding skills compared to female teachers. The outcomes of the research could be utilized to formulate some interventions to improve the quality of interaction between students and teachers to make the classroom environment mutually beneficial for both. ","PeriodicalId":271931,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126328689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study focuses on exploring how the myth of white beauty is a traumatic experience for the black women and how do the issues of white beauty and gender discrimination contribute to the wretchedness of black women and cast depreciating effects on their psyche. The conceptual framework employed in the study is Freud’s psychoanalytical theory of repressed unconscious which resultantly cultivates psychological problems in individuals. The theory has been applied on the texts to throw light on the effects of unconsciously suppressed memories and emotions on the psyche of Pecola and Dorcas.
