In our previous work, we proposed a framework for detecting anomalous behavior of VNFs using a SOM-based technique. The solution relies upon manually configuring the SOM clustering parameters and selecting the statistics for each failure type in advance, which results in a high maintenance load. In this paper, we provide a solution that is universal in the sense that a range of different faults can be detected using a single set of local statistics and SOM clustering parameters. Experimental results from a testbed show that faults, including memory leak, packet congestion, and session congestion, can be detected with high accuracy using only four types of performance statistics.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130410899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to compress and transmit the feature information, wavelet transform is conducted and the high-frequency component histograms are fitted using generalized Gaussian distribution. At end user side, the video distortion is measured by using Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) and therefore MOS is evaluated using neural network fitting. Network congestion may happen in traffic peak times. In order to prevent this from happening, network service providers (NSPs) can either over-provision capacity for demand at peak times of the day, or use dynamic time-dependent pricing (TDP) scheme to reduce the demand at traffic peak times. Since over-provisioning network capacity is costly, many researchers have proposed TDP schemes to control congestion as well as to improve the revenue of NSPs. To the best of our knowledge, all these studies consider only the monopoly NSP case. In our previous work, the duopoly and oligopoly NSP cases have been studied. NSPs try to maximize their overall revenue by setting time-dependent prices, while users choose NSPs by considering their own time preference, congestion statuses in the networks and the prices set by the NSPs. One assumption that has been made is that Quality of Service (QoS) function of each NSP is linear, which means that the level of QoS degradation is proportional to the number of users in the network. However, in reality, the level of QoS may degrade rapidly after a certain point, which is not reflected through linear QoS functions. Therefore, concave QoS function is a better choice. In this paper, the case of concave QoS function is considered. TDP is evaluated under different QoS functions. The results shows that TDP is also effective under concave QoS functions.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129313805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its simplicity to quickly deploy and fully manage networks, both academia and industry are interested in this technology. Nevertheless, there are still many issues to be solved. In this paper, we propose to divide flow table into two separate tables, namely path table and traffic table, to minimize flow initialization latency in SDN. We designed a SDN controller system following this concept and proposed two heuristic algorithms to calculate the two tables. The algorithms take both initialization latency and link utilization into consideration. We implement the proposed system on Ryu controller and perform experiments in a Mininet-based testbed. The experimental results show that our proposed solution outperforms the default spanning tree protocol (STP) application on Ryu controller by reducing: (i) the initialization latency up to 60%, (ii) the maximal link utilization up to 4.78%, and (iii) the average link utilization up to 1.45%.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116686670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The payload signature-based-classifier is considered as a reliable method for Internet traffic classification, but is prohibitively and computationally expensive for real-time handling of large amounts of traffic on high-speed network. To solve this problem, most studies focused on the pattern matching algorithm or hardware-based approaches such as FPGA and network processor. However, in order to improve the performance of the classification system, It is also necessary to consider the classification criteria and signature model in accordance with the characteristics of various application protocols. In this paper, we newly define the classification criteria and signature model, and propose an optimized classification architecture in perspective of input data minimization and complexity of pattern matching algorithm to improve the processing speed of classification system. Each of them can be applied individually, or in any combination. The proposed method achieved an approximately 5-fold increase in processing speed over existing baseline classification system.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"3 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128781208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It usually realized by analyzing the connection between failures and symptoms. However, many symptoms may not synchronize with faulty nodes and potential failures with unknown types remain undetected in passive network management. In this paper, we propose a Facing-the-Impact-Factor (FIF) algorithm using active approach based on probes. We use the complex network theory to calculate the impact factor of each node according to all services in EPDNet. And probes are applied to detect failures on initiative, thus a real time network state can be showed in the form of matrix, then apply the impact factor to Bayesian network to determine the faulty nodes. Simulation results demonstrate the high accuracy and low false positive rate of FIF algorithm.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129144682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed algorithm can maximize the total sum of the increment of user satisfaction levels in a finite charging scheduling period. In order to develop the algorithm, we define an objective function that includes the characteristics of charging capacity behaviors for the associated devices and formulate the problem as a convex optimization problem. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can be efficiently implemented in a very low complexity. Simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm can achieve the maximum sum of the increment of user satisfaction levels compared to existing conventional approaches (e.g., equal allocation), thereby leading to an improved performance.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130729678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an important problem particularly in a data migration at cloud computing. Therefore, some bandwidth assignment methods have been proposed in a model where a transfer request either must be completed by a specified deadline or must be rejected if the deadline cannot be satisfied. However, existing methods are not practical in a large scale network since they assume a centralized control. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose a distributed bandwidth assignment method without using global network information. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves almost equal call-blocking probability to the existing centralized control method.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116013376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the OpenFlow control messages are in a low abstraction level. Therefore, even a single application-level operation requires many OpenFlow messages, which consume the bandwidth of the control network and reduce the SDN's scalability. One potential solution is to use high level domain specific northbound APIs in the control network. In this paper, we explore the possibility of adopting this solution by implementing and evaluating a new SDN framework, Ryuo. In Ryuo, we introduce Local Service, which runs directly on each SDN switch (hardware/software). In operations, Local Service provides northbound APIs to the SDN applications while it can use different southbound APIs for different switches. Ryuo eliminates unnecessary control messages, hence it decreases the volume of control traffic. Our evaluation of Ryuo on Mininet with example applications shows that Ryuo reduces the volume of control traffic at least 50% compared to the standard OpenFlow, and up to 40% compared to the local controller approach. We also evaluate the performance of running Local Services directly on physical switches. The results show that we can achieve lower event handling latency in large networks, but with the trade-off of a lower event handling throughput due to the computing power limitation on physical switches. In summary, we have shown that using high level northbound API in the control network can make the control network more efficient, and leads to better scalability.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127518994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This becomes important in order to maintain efficient operation of the network and generate benefit of tradeoff between macrocell and smallcells. The benefit to smallcells comes from the economic incentive offered by macrocell and the benefit to macrocell is achieved by reducing the load and saving spectrum. However, two important challenges are faced in this cooperation: 1) How much economic incentive can be offered by macrocell, and 2) How much offloading traffic volumes can be admitted by the smallcells. In this paper, we propose a novel game based approach for data offloading scheme to determine the amount of economic incentive a macrocell should offer to smallcells and to determine how much traffic each smallcell should admit from the macrocell. In our proposal, a two-stage non-cooperative Stackelberg game theory is applied to optimize the strategies of both macrocell and smallcells in order to maximize their utilities.","PeriodicalId":269263,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125283139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
